Are there any branded items that you once thought you would never compromise on, that the price rises have made you rethink?

As the title says really. This hit me today when I went to grab a box of our usual Crosta and Molicca branded breadsticks off the shelf. They were one thing that I always said were worth the extra. But today the price was up to £1.65, from about £1 a year ago and I did think that I should revert to a cheaper option. I appreciate it's not an essential product but still.
I'm still hanging in there with Green Giant Sweetcorn, but that's on dodgy ground.

In some ways I think it's lucky that supply issues over the last few years have forced me to try own brands/alternatives as I have swapped an awful lot of branded items already.

Before anyone jumps on me I do appreciate how fortunate I am to have the luxury of buying anything other than the most basic essentials, I know how many people out there are just grateful to eat at the moment.

Yorkshire Gold Tea, nothing is as nice(except Ringtons, but thats even more expensive).

gogohmm · 01/03/2023 09:26

I've never bought brands like Heinz, I simply can't taste the difference. We aren't particularly price sensitive here so haven't needed to change but to be honest I tend to buy lidl brand of most things, only venturing into Waitrose for specific products that lidl doesn't stock and my one exception to the rule - pukka tea bags.

purpledalmation · 01/03/2023 09:40

Hellmans mayonnaise. No other brand or own brand taste even close.

chanceofpear · 01/03/2023 11:34

I have started buying aldi washing liquid when i was previously a persil snob. Its nearly the same and half the price.

Tried switching from Twinings to Tesco Finest English Breakfast teabags. That was a very sad few days in our house and won't be happening again.

The Tesco finest Earl Grey is amazing!

We were loyal Heinz beans customers for twenty years. Their prices are outrageous now so we switched to M&S beans at 50p a can and just as nice!

Just bought and eaten a tin of M&S beans. At 50p we are very impressed!

Just bought and eaten a tin of M&S beans. At 50p we are very impressed!

After your reviews, I'll be giving them a go too.

I'm yet to find a non-Heinz ketchup I'm happy with so if anyone has any recommendations I'm all ears!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/03/2023 14:05

I have given up on Heinz soup, baked beans and salad cream, and Hellman's mayonnaise.
Have switched to the much cheaper M&S brands which taste just as good.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/03/2023 14:06

M&S farmhouse loaf is also way cheaper and far nicer than brands.

MaggieMagpie357 · 01/03/2023 14:16

Heinz Baked Beans (own brand, 50p)
Cushelle toilet roll (own brand, £1.55 for 4)
McCoys crisps (own brand, £1 for 6 packs)
Flora Light (own brand, £2)
Fresh mince (frozen, £3.40)

RedRiverShore3 · 01/03/2023 14:16

Heinz ketchup, we have Waitrose essentials or Tesco

RedRiverShore3 · 01/03/2023 14:19

M&S bread is better than the branded especially supersoft thick white bread, we always have that now for toast

I tried the Lidl marmite. It's exactly the same

The Aldi marmite (which is about £1.70 for normal sized jar) won Which consumer magazine testing over Marmite own brand! I prefer it!

Please don't all go out and buy it and then I can't get any!

Nsky62 · 01/03/2023 14:32

Swapped purina one to Aldi one at, no issues, with old cat,new cat likes it too. I won’t buy the cheaper brands, less protein and good ingredients in them ,4% to 16%protein.
i buy eco washing liquid, bio d ( online or health food shops), used to use Ecover not as good, and their cleaning stuff, bit more expensive not much tho, to me.
Lots of stuff Aldi or Lidl own brand and great, swap where I can

daffodilandtulip · 01/03/2023 14:39

I tried the Aldi marmite and it was absolutely disgusting. It doesn't always pay 🤣

I mean, I think I've now got to the point of deciding if we even need the item, never mind down-branding.

ifonly4 · 01/03/2023 14:39

Tend to buy a lot of shops own brands anyway.

I do prefer Persil or Fairy for the smell, but to be honest Lidl's own cleans just as well so I've gone back to using that.

Only things I'm still buying branded (and I begrudge the that they've gone from £1.70 to £2.10 for a box) are Nestle cappuccino sachets. A little treat we have the only day neither of us works. DH says to look at it from the point of view if we had a coffee out, it'd be a lot more expensive. Also, Felix and Purina One (their lordships won't eat anything else so no point wasting money).

Samanabanana · 01/03/2023 14:43

I never thought I'd give up lurpak, but at six quid a bloody tub and a family that eat buttered items like they're going out of fashion, there's no way I'm paying for it! It does make me wonder how many of these big name brands will be able to weather this, especially if people don't change their shopping habits back when they've (hopefully) more spare dosh...

MyOtherUsernameIsDave · 01/03/2023 14:47

We buy Asda beans they are so good!

I’ve never been hung up on branded food though. There’s no way in the world I’m spending £3 on some mayo.

Nabootique · 01/03/2023 15:41

@MaggieMagpie357 Please could you tell me which own brand McCoys you get? I would really like to find an alternative.

MaggieMagpie357 · 01/03/2023 15:51

@Nabootique they're Tesco Ridge crisps, 6 pack for £1 (or at least that was the price last week!)

Nabootique · 01/03/2023 15:54

@MaggieMagpie357 Great, thank you!

evtheria · 01/03/2023 15:56

Fairy liquid, I have now been using the Tesco one for the last few months.

Everything else has always been fair game for switching.

Theraffarian · 01/03/2023 15:57

I finally caved with Asda yeast spread instead of marmite this week , haven’t opened it yet , but had to be worth a go when a big jar of marmite was pennies under £6. I haven’t found any crisps that taste as good as walkers yet though so they are staying.

Enko · 01/03/2023 16:01

Branded coffee beans but we use more than 1 brand just never found a own brand I didnt feel was bitter.

We switched to waitrose own spreadable butter its fine but I can see the difference..

Ketchup we switched to own brand years ago (waitrose) sainsbury own brand is ok too bit the tesco one is awful..

We buy a branded expensive handsoap for the kitchen but it's more aboit the ability to wash smells away than the brand in the toilet we have own brand.

AbsoluteYawns · 01/03/2023 16:03

AdoraBell · 28/02/2023 22:56

Sharwoods (spelling?) mango chutney. It’s was £3.40 in Sainsbury’s yesterday, I got the own brand one. Smaller jar but only £1.

Sainsbury's own brand is hands down the best. I've tried all the supermarkets own and branded!
