Are there any branded items that you once thought you would never compromise on, that the price rises have made you rethink?

As the title says really. This hit me today when I went to grab a box of our usual Crosta and Molicca branded breadsticks off the shelf. They were one thing that I always said were worth the extra. But today the price was up to £1.65, from about £1 a year ago and I did think that I should revert to a cheaper option. I appreciate it's not an essential product but still.
I'm still hanging in there with Green Giant Sweetcorn, but that's on dodgy ground.

In some ways I think it's lucky that supply issues over the last few years have forced me to try own brands/alternatives as I have swapped an awful lot of branded items already.

Before anyone jumps on me I do appreciate how fortunate I am to have the luxury of buying anything other than the most basic essentials, I know how many people out there are just grateful to eat at the moment.

Heinz products, Nutella, walkers crisps and Persil - switched to shop own brands with them all and probably won’t go back to them even if the price decreases, which I think we all know it won’t.

We didn't buy a huge amount of brands anyway, but have recently moved to Waitrose or M&S own brand ketchup and mayo from Heinz and Hellman's. Both supermarkets' are as good as branded, but much cheaper. We had tried other supermarket own brands but we've not liked them and reverted back as soon as the trial bottle was done, so it's been good to find an acceptable alternative.
We have also swapped out the Lurpak. We have tried every supermarket alternative and none taste as good/the same. No one in the house is happy with the switch, but we just can't justify the increase.

The prices may go down. Companies of the size of Tesco can demand justification for their suppliers' prices. Tesco (et al) are barely accepting their suppliers' prices as it is. Once fuel/fertiliser costs drop (which they should) and veg oil is in more plentiful supply then many prices should drop.

Anchor real butter
Heinz macoroni/chicken soup
Cathedral city mature cheddar
Babybels
Skips/wotsits

Heavily savoury/cheese based family!
Any recommendations for close dupes MNS?

@Manchestermummax2 the Aldi version of tinned macaroni cheese is lovely. I got some the other week not really expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised at just how nice it was.

Also the snack rite cheese puffs are just as nice as watsits. I'm not sure if they come in multi packs by themselves though. I got mine in a mixed bag of onion rings, bacon rashers and salt and vinegar chip sticks

Heinz Ketchup .. I'm not paying those prices! I'll accept supermarket ones don't taste quite as good in order to save.

DarkNecessities · 01/03/2023 00:51

Pesto

Madamecastafiore · 01/03/2023 01:46

Heinz beans, ketchup and salad cream. All been replaced with M&S own brand. Cheaper and nicer IMO.

Use Ocado dishwasher tablets rather than fairy/finish and I think they're better too.

Try M&S - I would actually say it's better than Heinz. Other shops' own brands are thin and vinegary, but this one is thicker than branded with a taste more like a premium brand such as Tiptree.

Dragonsandcats · 01/03/2023 07:45

Heinz beans and ketchup!

soleilblue · 01/03/2023 07:47

Washing liquid. Used to insist on fairy/persil and comfort pure for the little one.

BarrelOfOtters · 01/03/2023 07:50

I’ve never bought branded washing powder, washing up liquid etc….

butter though, it has to be butter (though I don’t get the lurpak love, it’s bland) I buy a local butter.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 01/03/2023 07:51

@Manchestermummax2 m&s chicken soup is better than heinz and only 65p

pastypirate · 01/03/2023 07:51

Cheap mayonaise is yuck. Soar mayo especially yuck. Everything else I'll go also aldi.
Aldi tango is lush

pastypirate · 01/03/2023 07:55

Spar even

RAC wanted me to pay nearly £200 to renew breakdown cover, I saw I could get it a lot cheaper with the AA. I phoned them up to complain, they agreed and cut the price to below the AA price! Saved £120.

TribeD · 01/03/2023 08:23

Anchor spreadable. I don't care how much it costs, I'll buy it. I don't use a lot of it, and have tried loads of alternatives but I just don't like them.

It's about the only branded thing I do buy, I'm not fussy about much else.

Islafrog · 01/03/2023 08:27

I decanted Aldi own brand ketchup into a Heinz bottle. Neither of my teens noticed anything different. I told them once they had been using it for a few weeks and the bottle was finished. Aldi own brand from now on, have also swapped to their mayo.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/03/2023 08:31

Heinz beans!

CleaningOutMyCloset · 01/03/2023 08:36

Branded washing powder and fabric softener, I now buy the aldi version which isn't as good, but I'll take that over the expense of the branded versions

hennybeans · 01/03/2023 08:41

Sweet corn is one I thought I would never level down. I first tried frozen which is quite different in taste and texture, so recently I tried Sainsbury’s tinned sweet corn and it’s fine. There’s a ridiculous difference in price between Sainsbury’s and Green Giant.

I always bought Branston’s beans as I think Heinz is all sauce. Recently switched to Sainsbury’s and it’s fine.

In fact, pesto is the only thing that has to be branded. And it’s now so expensive that I don’t really buy it anymore. Oh, and curry paste. I tried store branded but my curry was really bland so I still buy Patak’s.

LaFemmeDamnee · 01/03/2023 08:44

Tried switching from Twinings to Tesco Finest English Breakfast teabags. That was a very sad few days in our house and won't be happening again.

userxx · 01/03/2023 08:49

Fairy dishwasher tablets have been replaced by Aldi magnum ones. Not quite as good but I'm sticking with them.

Neveranynamesleft · 01/03/2023 09:14

The large pack of cheddar cheese in Lidl's 'Simply' range works out much cheaper per kilo than the other cheeses. It is a big pack but I've bought this many times and always been delicious. We use a lot of cheese anyway so I dont buy any other now.
