Are there any branded items that you once thought you would never compromise on, that the price rises have made you rethink?

As the title says really. This hit me today when I went to grab a box of our usual Crosta and Molicca branded breadsticks off the shelf. They were one thing that I always said were worth the extra. But today the price was up to £1.65, from about £1 a year ago and I did think that I should revert to a cheaper option. I appreciate it's not an essential product but still.
I'm still hanging in there with Green Giant Sweetcorn, but that's on dodgy ground.

In some ways I think it's lucky that supply issues over the last few years have forced me to try own brands/alternatives as I have swapped an awful lot of branded items already.

Before anyone jumps on me I do appreciate how fortunate I am to have the luxury of buying anything other than the most basic essentials, I know how many people out there are just grateful to eat at the moment.

I've used Aldi Almat washing powder for years, fantastic value. Tried their dishwasher tabs but wasn't impressed.
I too ditched heinz Tom sauce recently in favour of Waitrose own brand, fine.
Used to use Cushelle loo paper but the quality plummeted so it's Regina at the moment but I'm open to suggestions, must be both strong and soft.

This it's got to be fairy dishwasher tablets. DH got the aldi ones and it ruined the extractor filters, I always say it was the most expensive box of dishwasher tablets at £250!

I didn’t buy branded before really, I already had a budget (not as in a penny budget).
Id say I’ve compromised on ready made meals, I’d always get one or two for when I was just exhausted.
I can’t compromise on anything skin related unfortunately, I’ve experienced for years, I have awfully sensitive skin.

I’d say the biggest change is buying in bulk like those huge roasts on sale, and cooking at weekends then freezing, it does get tiring at some point in the weekend but comes out cheaper. And buying one big pack of frozen vegetables of one kind only because it’s cheaper. So, in a way, you end up with a lot of similar meals in the week, but at least they’re healthy.
It has changed my whole budgeting approach but I’ve found it cheaper and allows to keep the meals healthy enough.
I do more home made cooking in general (bread, pancakes, the kind of stuff you’d just grab at tescos.
Im getting used to it a bit more with time.

Oh and chocolate, some are a waste of money for tiny amounts I just don’t do anymore now

And like you OP, I don’t complain (well, not that much ha, ok maybe a bit end of week when it’s the same meal again), although I try to vary with weeks. I know I’m fortunate to be able to buy in bulk (my budget is tight but not penny tight) because that saves a lot), and to maintain healthy meals in general, even if they get boring

Heinz soup is now £1.70! So I'm on the Waitrose own brand...90p. Same with HP brown sauce...£2.30 vs £1 for Waitrose own brand.

In our local co-op it's £1.95. I've abandoned it though nothing else seems.to match their tomato so may end up buying that occasionally.

Heinze seem intent on pricing themselves out of the market

Definitely Tilda basmati rice. We now buy own brand, and it's not the same but I'm not ready to pay the current price!

We can't change much due to several dietary requirements and/or sensitive skin, but we have switched to Aldi tomato soup for DH and DD. Cannot justify the prices of Heinz anymore and DD said she likes Aldi one so that's a swap.
I've also stopped buying gluten free bread as it's just not worth the money anymore. It's not even nice.

For tomato soup we have stayed with brands but switched from Baxter's to Campbell's condensed, and I buy the Campbell's in Home Bargains as it's so much cheaper there. It worked out better for us to use the condensed soup as the DCs then share it and end up with a larger portion than if we'd stuck with the standard size tin

Fage 0 Greek yoghurt. Delicious but not for £5.50 a pot.
Heinz ketchup (£4.50) is going next

@JMSA the Aldi village bakery one is lovely and only around 79p

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 08/03/2023 16:37

@Nabootique Aldi do their own version of McCoys too. They're called Snack rite thick cut ridge crisps. 99p for a pack of 6 and just as nice as the branded version
