Are there any branded items that you once thought you would never compromise on, that the price rises have made you rethink?

As the title says really. This hit me today when I went to grab a box of our usual Crosta and Molicca branded breadsticks off the shelf. They were one thing that I always said were worth the extra. But today the price was up to £1.65, from about £1 a year ago and I did think that I should revert to a cheaper option. I appreciate it's not an essential product but still.
I'm still hanging in there with Green Giant Sweetcorn, but that's on dodgy ground.

In some ways I think it's lucky that supply issues over the last few years have forced me to try own brands/alternatives as I have swapped an awful lot of branded items already.

Before anyone jumps on me I do appreciate how fortunate I am to have the luxury of buying anything other than the most basic essentials, I know how many people out there are just grateful to eat at the moment.

The only branded items I wont budge on are nescafe coffee and a decent branded toothpaste and deodorant.

Rebel2 · 28/02/2023 21:29

I won't give up my sure/dove deo, but it's the one in a box that's usually £5-6. I buy it in bulk on Amazon when it drops to about £3 each

Oh and marmite XO. But my dad bought 10 jars for me so I'm ok for a bit GrinBlush
All sauces now are Aldi, even given up Yorkshire tea

Meadowfly · 28/02/2023 21:32

I tried Tesco own brand pesto and it wasn’t nearly as nice. Own brand readybrek is identical though.

Coconut212 · 28/02/2023 21:36

Kellogg’s cereal onto Aldi own brand and kids can’t tell the difference. Don’t buy Heinz anymore going to try M&S as per poster above. Can’t justify Nutella that will now be a birthday and Christmas treat lol.

Yep beans here as well. I’m not exactly a connoisseur of baked beans but I honestly can’t tell the different between Aldi and Heinz.

DP used to be such a brand snob but now our cupboards are full of things like Aldi ketchup, mayo, hula hoops etc. The only thing he hasn’t economised on yet is marmite.

I tried the Lidl marmite. It's exactly the same

StillMedusa · 28/02/2023 22:22

Marmite! I can hardly believe I'm saying it, but DS2 bought Asda's own brand. I pitched a fit Grin then tried it... and it tastes almost identical and spreads far more easily so I have... after eating it for over 50 years.. converted!!!

Still hanging onto Nescafe tho !!

BrigitteBond · 28/02/2023 22:27

Some PP mentioned breakdown cover. You can get RAC cover with Tesco clubcard for £3 of cover for every £1 of vouchers.

And I've recently switched to Tesco dishwasher tablets and I can't say my dishes are any dirtier than they were with branded tabs.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/02/2023 22:30

I think the only brand we have left is Yorkshire Tea!

DH has declared Asda Essential spaghetti hoops nicer than heinz.

I prefer Asda marmite to real marmite. It's more like marmite was when I was a kid in the 70s.

Persil was £7 in Wilko. So DH brought 3 X Wilko own brand for £5 on offer. Perfectly fine.

Vermin · 28/02/2023 22:37

Laundry liquid - I feel I’ve wasted a small fortune in branded in the past.

RandomMess · 28/02/2023 22:37

DH managed to switch from Heinz ketchup to Batts from Lidl thank goodness.

TyneTeas · 28/02/2023 22:39

Aldi brown sauce and salad cream

BrigitteBond · 28/02/2023 22:39

Asda 'Shades' toilet roll is better than the best branded in my opinion.

Quitelikeit · 28/02/2023 22:43

Heinz beans have been ditched. I predict in a few months they’ll be in home bargains cheap as chips because they’ll be going out of date or whatever

Heinz ketchup also has gone as the price is ridiculous

WhisperGold · 28/02/2023 22:45

@Theyresexpeoplemn Aldi & Lidl do Lurpak dupes for half the price. Just as good IMHO.

'Cheap as chips'?

Have you seen the price of chips? 🤣

Thanks. I've tried them, but just don't like them. Dh can't tell the difference so he has it, and I use it in cooking, mostly, but it has to be lurpak for me.

Don't flame me please, but I'd like my beloved dog to be on top of the range insurance. Instead, it's pretty middle of the road. Thankfully - touch wood - I've never had to claim. But I'd love the peace of mind of top notch cover; it's just too expensive.

JMSA · 28/02/2023 22:53

I can't give up Warburtons toastie bread (the orange waxed packet). It's just so soft and squishy, and usually has a decent use-by date.

AdoraBell · 28/02/2023 22:56

Sharwoods (spelling?) mango chutney. It’s was £3.40 in Sainsbury’s yesterday, I got the own brand one. Smaller jar but only £1.

TeeBee · 28/02/2023 22:58

Heinz soup is now £1.70! So I'm on the Waitrose own brand...90p. Same with HP brown sauce...£2.30 vs £1 for Waitrose own brand.

I'd rather buy Tesco multiseed wholemeal even if was three times the price of Warburton's best blotting paper.

Agreed. I do have pretty good insurance...but I do pay a fortune - but he's nearly 12 and we claim for ongoing things.

Treseme - I have strayed...but it works for my hair.

ElizabethBest · 28/02/2023 23:09

Heinz beans, crunchy nut cornflakes, and fresh ingredients in general - I used to make everything from scratch but it’s often cheaper to get a pre-made sauce now rather than individual ingredients.
