When do you, if ever, drink champagne?

I had a milestone birthday recently and moved house last week. For both of these I have been given a fair few bottles of champagne - ranging from Mumm to Veuve Cliquot/Laurent Perrier. I don't mind champagne, and regularly drink Prosecco at home, but it feels strangely indulgent to drink champagne on a random Saturday night. Yes, I could save it for special occasions but what would they be?

So yes - my question is, if you have champagne in your house, when would you drink it?

Birthdays, good days at work, Christmas, new year, people visiting, end of super tough week.

Orcubed · 14/01/2023 18:44

Christmas, new year, anyone’s birthday, a random Saturday…

I don’t drink regularly so have no qualms over opening a bottle of champagne for no reason other than I want some!

Good news, births, deaths, gcse results, new jobs

We would drink it if we had a reason - birthday, anniversary, Christmas, new year, etc. I think I actually prefer Prosecco or cava so would chose to drink those before champagne.

There is nothing more empowering than cracking open a bottle for no reason, we've been known to celebrate surviving a Tuesday

Barleysugar86 · 14/01/2023 18:45

Christmas, New Year, New House, Exam Results.

Or if you don't think you'll get through it, regift in a nice gift bag at the next wedding you attend!

Krakenes · 14/01/2023 18:46

Most weekends!

PuttingDownRoots · 14/01/2023 18:46

My aunt used to have a glass to celebrate doing the hoovering. I like her style.

daisym00n · 14/01/2023 18:46

Whenever we have baked Camembert for some reason. It’s a bit of a tradition.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 14/01/2023 18:47

When I’m not well. A wine merchant I was friendly with once told me that a glass of champagne is the best pick me up ( though the whole bottle would probably have a different effect). He was right.

My first Christmas alone. Children with my ex - I decided to make it a positive occasion & now I drink it every Christmas they are with him. Not a celebration because they are not with me but more of an 'I am a strong, independent woman' thing Grin

My husband is sent a bottle from work for every high day and holiday, so around most high days and holidays. Neither of us particularly likes champagne though, so we usually have a couple of bottles in hand should we need to pop a cork for something - I have 2 lucky dips on the lotto tonight 😁

Fundays12 · 14/01/2023 18:50

Normally Christmas day, birthdays etc though if we had it might open it on our home date night

Absolutely this. I can regularly plough through a bottle of Prosecco but find champagne a little too dry. But I like the idea of being truly decadent one Tuesday night!

It only lasts 2 years after bottling for NV, don't keep it too long. Up the side of the label in v small print should say when.

Drbrowns · 14/01/2023 18:53

Drink it, it doesn’t keep

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/01/2023 18:53

We usually have prosecco on a Fri or Sat, so I'd swap in the champagne one of those nights but make sure it's when (eg) the final episode of a show we are binging is on, or a movie we've been dying to see, or if we are trying a new board game.

CornishIrish · 14/01/2023 18:54

I mostly drink Cremant as it’s the same thing but cheaper but we went through four bottles over Christmas. Champagne/Cremant I would usually have for birthdays, celebrations or whenever I get it as a gift. As a general rule though I never save things for best. Life is too short

LynneBenfield · 14/01/2023 18:55

It’s very good with fish and chips, OP.

BamBamBilla · 14/01/2023 18:58

Hate the stuff. I put it in the risotto.

Pedallleur · 14/01/2023 18:59

I work with someone who loves champagne and has a rack of 6 bottles permanently. Any excuse. He makes a point of sourcing it discounted. So he might see 5 bottles of Laurent Perrier at 40% off then there might be a further discount so he will spend 100 pounds having saved 150

whereaw · 14/01/2023 18:59

If I had a bottle I'd be drinking it right now!

HavfrueDenizKisi · 14/01/2023 19:00

Quite a lot actually.

When we have a quiet Friday evening in.

When we have friends over for lunch. When we go to friends for food.

When we walk the dog to nice pub on a Saturday afternoon.

Plus birthdays, Christmas etc.

We also stock a good cremant - champagne that's not made in the champagne region but using the same grapes/methods. It's usually much cheaper than actual champagne but tastes as good.

(I am much less keen on Prosecco though - sweetened fizz).

I'd say just chill them and enjoy them - don't necessarily save them for special.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 14/01/2023 19:01

Btw you find champagne dry because you're used to sweetened Prosecco.

Thesonglastslonger · 14/01/2023 19:01

Be aware that champagne goes off much faster than most wine. We had a ‘special’ bottle we kept on a shelf for ten years and were gutted to discover we’d ruined it by keeping it too long.

Just drink it 😃 Goes very well with fish pie 😋
