Can anything be urgently done about a pile?

I’ve felt a lump around my anus earlier in the week, and woke up with severe pain today. It was coming from the area so I felt it and it was now grape sized. DH looked, it’s a pile. Blue in colour and external- so can’t be pushed back in.

DH went out and got me Anusol and the pharmacist advised me to take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Granted, I’ve only had two doses of each and only applied Anusol at 9ish this morning- but the pain is steadily getting worse.

The pain is a solid 8/10. I have an 7 month old and can only feed her laying down as it’s severely uncomfortable to sit up with her. I can’t walk without crying, let alone be on the floor playing with her.

I have heard about piles before, never had one- and just didn’t realise it can be this severe.

Is there a private option to get it drained if this level of pain continues? I can’t believe such a tiny thing is stopping me from doing day to day tasks :(

Fuck it I’m going to a&e as soon as DH gets back

it’s literally got bigger from this morning

wait it out is barbaric

I’m going to be a squeaky wheel

Did the GP not call or wouldn't they see you?

mum and I are both getting calls from our respective surgeries about problems we no longer have (as in, they are working on info that's years out of date). Meanwhile, people like you can't seen. It's mad.

Iwannabeamartian · 19/01/2023 16:12

Hi OP, I’m not sure if you saw my earlier post but I have had this exact situation in the last month.

I ended up going to see a private colorectal surgeon who sorted me within 10 mins by removing the clot (even though nhs websites say this can o ou be done within the first 48 hours…..I’d had mine just over a month at this point). A week later and everything had returned to normal. I also tried the Scheriproct but that wasn’t working at all (which the surgeon said was due to the fact the clot was there)

i booked the appointment on a Wednesday afternoon and was seen on the Friday morning. Ten min appointment and all sorted. Cost me £200 but was well worth it!

Rightsraptor · 19/01/2023 16:13

I've read all your posts @GoldenCagedBird and can I say how I admire the humour that percolates out from them, despite your pain.

You mentioned starting with a raised temperature and sore throat at one point. I imagine that resolved itself and wasn't linked to the "arse bollock", as I think you called it.

It's just so bloody miserable and it's always things like this that doctors persist in calling minor, while you feel like chucking yourself under the nearest bus.

Let us know what happens, won't you?

Manically refreshing for @Iwannabeamartian

DH home in 20

Just packing a little bag and a cushion. God knows how long I’ll be. Going to take a taxi by myself and DH will bring baby in a few hours if I’m still there

Honestly one of the things I hate most in the world is when people go to A&E unnecessarily.

I would have gone two days ago if I were you. Good luck!

BigSkies2022 · 19/01/2023 16:52

Good luck, OP. I hope you get some decent help and relief soon.

If it cheers you at all, my story of an encounter with a less-than-super-helpful-receptionist relates to some decades ago, when I was called for a cervical smear by my GP surgery. I had a history of mild abnormalities and the GP liked to keep an eye on things. I duly rang the surgery to make an appointment, only to be met by scepticism by the receptionist, who didn't believe that, at my age, I warranted a smear more often than 5 years. My response that the surgery had summoned ME, not the other way round, cut no ice, and she proceeded to ask, rather angrily, why I thought I warranted this appointment? Did I, for example, have more than one sexual partner??

I was very young, and easily taken aback in those days. Today I'd meet such a question with a delighted snort and a "What, d'ye mean like swinging? Why, are you proposing an orgy? Only it will have to be at yours because we don't really have the room.' I did complain to the doctor though, when I eventually saw her. Bloody cheek of it!

TokyoSushi · 19/01/2023 16:55

Oh my, I've just come across your thread, sounds horrific, keep us posted, good luck!

meggyhi · 19/01/2023 17:04

Good luck!

They don't band external piles, only internal piles so that's out. They won't remove it while it's thrombosed, they'd only do that to the skin tag you're going to have left when it finally calms down. Your best case scenario is that they'll remove the clot for you but that's really doubtful since you've had it so long now. If they do remove the clot and you get the skin tag removed at a later date be prepared for the recovery, it took me 10 weeks before I wasn't in agony, like having a giant anal fissure. If you don't have it removed you'll be susceptible to it flaring up and becoming thrombosed off and on.

The reason they are not concerned or considering that you have an infection is because piles, especially thrombosed are monumentally painful. Your reaction is normal and they've seen it all before. I feel certain all they'll offer you at a and e is stronger painkillers but given the constipation risk and how much worse that would make your bum it's not always worth it.

Tippletoomany · 19/01/2023 17:47

if you haven’t already, you need the suppositories or creams containing hydrocortisone. not the 3 way action anusol but the 4 way action. these help clear mine up, plus, epsom salt baths if you have a bath! good luck OP, hoping it eases quickly

Tippletoomany · 19/01/2023 17:48

to respond to previous posters too, they will only band internal haemorrhoids and they no longer remove skin tags on the NHS.

TrashyPanda · 19/01/2023 17:52

Hope you get seen quick.yand that something is done

verabarbleen · 19/01/2023 17:53

Had the worst piles when I was pregnant with dd I tried everything and the thing that helped most was sudocrem and I tried the spritz for bits spray that helped too!

user1471505356 · 19/01/2023 17:54

If all else fails, the maternity unit you previously attended might be sympathetic and not collapsing .

Minfilia · 19/01/2023 17:59

I posted on your other thread too, but it sounds like A&E is smart!

I remember my BIL doing this… we had just come back from a transatlantic flight and he was in agony - he could barely sit down and was in excruciating pain for take off, landing, turbulence etc. He is 6’2”, a builder, and built like a brick shit house and he was holding back tears!

They won't remove skin tags? Presumably after the external pile has shrunk?

Whyever not? Is that purely a cost measure or something else

No, so I had a skin tag after a pile and they told me that they ‘don’t remove them anymore on the NHS’. i presume it’s cost saving measure and i know the area is high risk so they minimise the work to necessity but it does feel like it’s mainly due to money!

Wereeaglesdare · 19/01/2023 18:08

Have u tried vicks vapour rub? It literally shrivels them up and gives u cool relief i mean do it at ur own risk but it saved the day for me told someone else and they got massive relief from it too. Like a miracle

Ouch4321 · 19/01/2023 18:10

Not helpful immediately OP, but for future reference, once it's started to heal, it will probably be a bit of a gross skin flap.
I had the skin flaps, and some semi thrombosed piles removed privately last year.
HORRENDOUS recovery, like childbirth for almost a week, never felt such pain. But now, almost a year down the line, it's changed my life, and my butt looks great Smile

Ouch4321 · 19/01/2023 18:11

Oh and it cost about £2.5K if I remember correctly. Worth every bloody penny!

GoldenCagedBird · 19/01/2023 18:15

skin tags are ‘cheap’ to be removed privately - I’m not
worried about that. The proper private rectal surgery does 3 skin tags for £300 and my aesthetics friend will do them for free if I was up for something more backstreet.

i’ll work that out later

been triaged pretty quickly - waiting for doc now
