Can anything be urgently done about a pile?

GoldenCagedBird · 14/01/2023 14:48

I’ve felt a lump around my anus earlier in the week, and woke up with severe pain today. It was coming from the area so I felt it and it was now grape sized. DH looked, it’s a pile. Blue in colour and external- so can’t be pushed back in.

DH went out and got me Anusol and the pharmacist advised me to take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Granted, I’ve only had two doses of each and only applied Anusol at 9ish this morning- but the pain is steadily getting worse.

The pain is a solid 8/10. I have an 7 month old and can only feed her laying down as it’s severely uncomfortable to sit up with her. I can’t walk without crying, let alone be on the floor playing with her.

I have heard about piles before, never had one- and just didn’t realise it can be this severe.

Is there a private option to get it drained if this level of pain continues? I can’t believe such a tiny thing is stopping me from doing day to day tasks :(

If no one has examined you how do they know it's not infected?

no one is interested. Even the nice doctor.

Hi OP, I've just come over from your other thread and want to sympathise with you. Piles are so painful and yours is worse than any I've had. I'm so sorry that nothing's being done for you.

(I have got to the stage of considering asking DH to tie mine off with a small elastic band in the hope that it will die and drop off, but I haven't got quite that desperate yet!)

Interested in this thread?

Poor you OP! Are you getting any relief from the scheriproct? If not go back and say you think you've got a prolapse so they have to examine you to check you've not got an infection.
I found 48 hours of the cream did make a huge difference even on external ones.

At this point OP, I would be going to urgent care/a&e and say you’re worried it’s infected or that you have a prolapse. You’ve tried the GP and it hasn’t helped.

Isthisexpected · 19/01/2023 14:06

I would also go to urgent care. This is awful.

MerelyPlaying · 19/01/2023 14:10

Oh god - feel for you. That’s utterly awful.

Cactusprick · 19/01/2023 14:31

Phone your doctor and ask for scheriproct suppositories. They are the only thing that work for me when mine get like yours. I have had banding treatment before which cuts the blood supply and causes them to drop off but they came back. So getting them removed doesn’t mean you won’t get them back, I’m afraid.

honestly those suppositories above really work xx

mintdaisy · 19/01/2023 14:39

Oh sorry to hear that op. It took time but mine did self resolve both times. I'm hoping yours does too or that you get some help in the meantime.

Cactusprick · 19/01/2023 14:40

GoldenCagedBird · 19/01/2023 13:00

Oh and apparently scheriproct doesn’t work on external piles (dr’s words) so why I’ve wasted my time
on that I don’t know

Oh no! Sorry I didn’t catch up on all your updates before I just posted previously. I don’t know why the doctor said that; mine were thrombosed (they were almost black they were so blue) a couple of months ago. I do totally understand the pain. Scheriproct did shrink them down to give me a normal-ish looking arsehole within 48 hours.
Dont worry, you shouldn’t have months of this, they do come and go (well, they’re kind of aways there but just very small bobbles until they have a flare up), sometimes absolutely no rhyme or reason as to why. Like I said, I’ve had mine banded and they just developed again. Some people are just prone. I really hope you feel better soon, poor you xx

Favouritefruits · 19/01/2023 14:41

Get an online appointment with Dr@hand they will refer you straight away if you ask.

Cactusprick · 19/01/2023 14:42

When I say they’re very small bobbles most of the time, I mean and totally painless too xx

Hi OP, re: the chart that you posted a link too

clicking the link within the document (click for more info) by the Thrombosed Haemorrhoids box leads to different advice. (Rather than following the Severity Grading pathway)

Changefor · 19/01/2023 15:23

Came from the other thread and so sorry to hear that OP. I haven’t been through it but I really feel for you ❤️ and hope that someone here has the right advice and you can get it resolved

EarringsandLipstick · 19/01/2023 15:25

Sorry OP. Piles can be awful. I was in your situation after I had my first DC, and I have had occasional recurrences. (the internal piles are worse for me).

One thing to realise is that piles never fully go away, but can be managed well.

Like a PP, Sheriproct suppositories are really helpful - can you get those today? (on prescription).

In the longer-term you might need an operation, I'm in Ireland where you can choose private healthcare fairly easily (if you were waiting for this on the public system, you'd wait forever). I would definitely recommend a private referral if it's possible for you.

Good luck, I really hope it improves soon. That pain is so hard.

Soozikinzii · 19/01/2023 15:30

Proctosedyl suppositries are very good . They have to be on prescription .

GoldenCagedBird · 19/01/2023 15:35

Fuck it I’m going to a&e as soon as DH gets back

it’s literally got bigger from this morning

wait it out is barbaric

I’m going to be a squeaky wheel

I’ve come over from your other thread, totally sympathise with you.

I’ve had the Scheriproct, Anusol H, medical grade numbing gel (that didn’t work as my problem is also external), I’ve even tried putting sugar on it. Recently, I have taken to putting Emla cream on my bum hole when it’s at the excruciating stage, it numbs it for long enough for me to get some relief if I lie down on my side with a pillow between my legs. It can be used on genitals but not internally

I had massive piles during pregnancy and I’ve actually been left with a huge piece of stretched skin round my anus. I have IBS so if I’m having a bad day, the bit of skin literally swells to 4 times it’s usual size. It hangs down through my bum cheeks it’s that big, horribly rubs against my pants while it’s at it 😩I’ve been to the docs that much I’ve been referred to general surgery in the hopes that they can slice it off and give me some long term relief. Got my consultation on Monday.

I hope you get some relief soon, Op.

OntarioBagnet · 19/01/2023 15:47

I tell you , you need to go at it like @amateurarsedoctor and apply an elastic band! 🙈

Ilovetocrochet · 19/01/2023 15:59

When I went to my local Private hospital for an appointment, I noticed that there was a private GP clinic there. I’m not sure of the cost of a consultation but have £75 in my head. I would consider paying that if I could not get to see my doctor for something that was painful, affecting day to day life but not a 999 emergency.

I assume that the clinic has quick access to consultants within the main hospital should one be necessary.

The hospital was part of the Spire group if that helps.

I posted the NICE guidance on your other thread. The info above gives the same advice but is easier to read.

You have thrombosed haemorrhoids. Focus on that not the staging level.

My advice as an ED clinician is that when you are at A&E you should state exactly what you want repeatedly politely and firmly : that you need to be referred to the on call surgical team for urgent assessment, as conservative management is not working.

If you don’t state what you want, you will probably end up being seeing a junior ED clinician and being sent home with more painkillers.

CharlotteRose90 · 19/01/2023 16:00

Screw the doctors. Go straight to a&e and don’t leave till they sort it. Piles are bloody awful. I’ve had internal and external ones.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 19/01/2023 16:03

I'm so sorry @GoldenCagedBird I really hope you get this sorted. The lackadaisical approach to this from your surgery is terrible.

Queenie24 · 19/01/2023 16:04

I hope you managed to get sorted. I can’t imagine the pain you must be in and being limited with pain killers will be hard going.
