Can anything be urgently done about a pile?

GoldenCagedBird · 14/01/2023 14:48

I’ve felt a lump around my anus earlier in the week, and woke up with severe pain today. It was coming from the area so I felt it and it was now grape sized. DH looked, it’s a pile. Blue in colour and external- so can’t be pushed back in.

DH went out and got me Anusol and the pharmacist advised me to take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Granted, I’ve only had two doses of each and only applied Anusol at 9ish this morning- but the pain is steadily getting worse.

The pain is a solid 8/10. I have an 7 month old and can only feed her laying down as it’s severely uncomfortable to sit up with her. I can’t walk without crying, let alone be on the floor playing with her.

I have heard about piles before, never had one- and just didn’t realise it can be this severe.

Is there a private option to get it drained if this level of pain continues? I can’t believe such a tiny thing is stopping me from doing day to day tasks :(

@GoldenCagedBird You have my utter sympathy here.

I had a thrombosed internal pile in Nov.

I was on my knees with the pain, could not do anything but cry.
All over the counter meds didnt even touch the sides.

As it was a weekend i called 111 whom advised paracetmol + to relax 🙄

In the end i went to A+E, they dossed me up on morphine then operated a day later.

The relief when i woke up was like nothing i had ever felt before.

No advice just sympathy

I’m really pleased that you managed to get it sorted in the end despite all of that fuss. It truly is horrible.

I’m going to give the steroids 48 hours to work as the doctor said, then I have to call back. It seems like there is a huge disparity between what GP’s actually do in a case like this.

I’m crossing my fingers for a shrunken plum tomorrow.

I think by the sounds of it, the gp will need to cut it out. The relief will be instant. Beg them, keep calling. The pain is beyond belief I’m sure. I think walking actually makes it worse. I hope you get sorted soon.

NewHopeNow · 17/01/2023 09:21

They only advise cutting the clot out in the first 48 hours. If you're past that you'll be expected to use the ice and ointments and let it go down naturally.

I had one years ago and it was awful, I really feel for you. I had to be really careful because after that first time it just kept flaring back up and thrombosing again and again. I eventually had it removed when it wasn't in an active flare up so it couldn't do it anymore. Had to go private for that.

Fuck me that’s a horrible thought. The fact that I’m going to spend months icing and dealing with the fucker is beyond me.

I had a wedding during lockdown where none of our families could come so this year is our big wedding ceremony/blessing and honeymoon- I’d like to not get Anusol on my wedding dress. Not very sexy.

Struggling to understand how much it will cost to go private. Some websites say £9k and some £300.
How much did your excision cost?

Have you got an “urgent care centre” near you? I’d be inclined to go there and get it looked at with the rate it’s growing

You have a temp and it's rapidly growing, I agree to seeing care asap.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/01/2023 09:48

Oh you've already sought help,oops!

Mischance · 17/01/2023 09:52

on the verge of getting dh to do it with a pen knife - my DH DID do mine on one occasion but with a sterile scalpel. He was a GP.

But will it go back inside eventually? Shock. I don't know how people are expected to manage I really don't.

I hope OP manages to have it removed but with the NHS being the way it is at the moment I don't know how quickly it could be resolved.

crymeout · 17/01/2023 18:22

How are you now OP? @GoldenCagedBird Sad

GoldenCagedBird · 17/01/2023 23:00

arsewatch 2023

feels like there is shrinkage but there is physically no change- just wishful thinking

still purple

haven’t been able to start my steriproct ointment yet as it didn’t come in on the order today, so I’d imagine another 48 hours from when I get it until docs will review it

so sore

OP posts:
catfunk · 18/01/2023 07:41

I'm here for #arsewatch op, hope you have a better day today.
I'm convinced the scheripoct will work.
I've just had a vague memory of it making me light headed too

MerelyPlaying · 18/01/2023 12:33

I keep checking in to see if there's been any shrinkage, @GoldenCagedBird !

Can I thank you, clearly this has been absolute agony for you but your posts are very funny. Secondly can I thank all the other people on here who have posted so frankly - I had no idea this could even happen, it's really helpful that other people have been open about their experience. We don't talk about these sort of things enough, as Dame Deborah James told us.

GoldenCagedBird · 18/01/2023 17:23

checking in - thanks @catfunk and @MerelyPlaying

ok so I got my scheriproct ointment and I have been buttering it on today. Dosed up on naproxen and took the baby out. The painkillers are working but I feel like I have a golf ball in my boxers. I say boxers as I am wearing DH’s pants as all my knickers are too lacy and stringy for the current situation.

me and my DH married and had a baby pretty quickly after meeting. My pregnancy didn’t have any horrible side effects so this is our first TMI situation and it’s been pretty hilarious. I’ve been (jokingly) told off
for leaving my ‘anus mirror’ on the toilet seat (it has a light!) and my pile has apparently been booked the aisle seat when we go on hols next month. God I hope it’s gone by then- we are SKIING.

Calling the GPs back at 8am tomorrow and pushing for an excision if possible, or a private referral if I continue to be told to wait it out. This is an absolutely descended blue bollock - not a cheeky little stage 1 like that you push back in. I simply can’t live with it.

OP posts:
catfunk · 18/01/2023 18:07

Ha, it made me laugh when people suggested I pushed mine back up. It was absolute agony even when NOT Touching it, it wasn't coming from inside anyway and was the size of a plum. I'd rather have sawn it off than push it up.
I'm quite large of arse too so I had 2 big old arse cheeks comressing it all the time too which was excruciating, I remember it moulding to the shape at one point!
I'm hoping it's gone down by the morning op. And glad your DH is seeing the funny side.

GoldenCagedBird · 19/01/2023 12:57

To update the thread:

No, nothing can be done urgently about pile

a very nice doctor called me back and was very sympathetic but said the NHS considers this a self resolving problem and I just have to take pain relief and leave it. She offered me more painkillers but I’m breastfeeding and co-sleeping.

I’m absolutely aghast and have had a big cry

researching private treatment but I’m seeing everything from £200 to £5000. I honestly don’t know what I’m looking for.

OP posts:
GoldenCagedBird · 19/01/2023 13:00

Oh and apparently scheriproct doesn’t work on external piles (dr’s words) so why I’ve wasted my time
on that I don’t know

OP posts:
meggyhi · 19/01/2023 13:02

Self resolving? It's not likely to shrivel up and pop back in is it? Nothing can be done urgently, though. Does that mean you can be referred to have it removed subject to waiting lists and times?

The GP who called me said nothing about referrals. Just that it ‘self resolves’

www.enhertsccg.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/pathways/Management%20of%20Haemorrhoids.pdf

I have found this flowchart online which suggests that I am at the stage 3 or 4 (no idea because no one has seen me) and in the phase of ‘conservative management’ (sit on a bag of peas and take painkillers). It’s been thombosed since Saturday so 14 days from will be next Saturday. After 14 days of
conservative management, I should get a secondary care referral where the treatment is banding or removal.

I will call back next Friday if it isn’t self resolved.
I don’t really know what else I can do.

OP posts:
XanaduKira · 19/01/2023 13:30

Oh Op, that's awful - no advice sorry but hope it self resolves soon!

BakedTattie · 19/01/2023 13:31

Could you call around a few private places and get a rough idea of costs directly?

Emmamoo89 · 19/01/2023 13:31
