Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

I would love a dolls house. One christmas a big parcel was delivered for my DH with a company name on the side. He took it off me saying it was a christmas present for me. I looked up the company and they mainly sold dolls houses. They were stunning. I didn't know how much I now wanted a dolls house until the moment I opened up my gift of an expensive day light lamp and stand.

Oh no! How disappointing!

I'm another dolls house fan. I have some that have been made up from kits, some bought second hand and a few “big name” artisan made ones. Some of mine are Tudor and I have a vampire castle, too.
I don't worry too much about period style, as it's set in a fantasy world, peopled by elves, witches and wizards and the odd alien.
I have them all in a room together and have to be really restrained about buying any more. Nowadays, I stick to buying pieces of furniture and fittings that really stand out or that I need for my shops.
I also make miniature bits and pieces when inspiration strikes. I make food out of Fimo and books for bookshelves. I make broomsticks and wizard hats for the hat shop and potion bottles.
I also have a vast doll population, all with names and back stories.

My sister does after I brought her a dolls house for her 30th. Now over 10 years on, we buy her bits for Xmas for it. Costs a ton and she is going for the 1940s era.

Oh and I brought her a little shop to do from scratch too.

@Minimoan

what website is that house on?

Has anyone bought from Melody Jane website?

gerispringer · 12/01/2023 07:39

I have a mid century dolls house made by my OH. I love decorating and making things for it and buying what I can’t make. It’s got lights and a garage with VW Beetle car. It’s 1/12 scale. I previously had a Lundby dolls house, which is a Swedish company made dolls house in the 70s. Lundby is a good house to get for starters if you like mid century design. It’s 1/16 scale and does have lights , great furniture etc. Check out Lundby on eBay.

Sorry for the giant paragraphs 🤔

I have a dolls house I am trying to furnish with things similar to those in my own house. I looked at some beautiful mid century modern miniatures... They cost as much as buying the full size items!!!! Around £100 for a dining chair! It's definitely not cheap if you want to get furniture that is anything like real furniture - unless you get plastic.

HarryArry · 12/01/2023 09:25

Etsy is good for dolls house furniture. I had my actual sofa and chairs made up as minis with the same cushions and everything. I’ve even had my art work made as mini. The same lady made me club chairs, cushions with a matching bedding set so I can put the chairs and cushions in the lounge or the bedroom.
I like to have fun with my house, I recently went to the Van Gough show and I was inspired to buy lots of his paintings in 1:12 size.
My custom made house cost £400 including the kitchen and I’ve spent £300 to .£400 on furnishing it and I have lots of spare stuff. Sometimes I have two double bedrooms, or I swap to one bedroom and one nursery. I switch the dining room furniture around, sometimes it’s in the large lounge other times I make up a posh dining room. I have a mini mini dolls house in every room.

@Ridelikethewindypops it's a Facebook marketplace ad and sadly sold out

I have the option to buy a Triang from the 1940s. So that's a potential

It's deciding on the house first and foremost I think that's the crucial thing. Although I love the sound of what you're doing @Giggorata I think I'd have to be a specific era kinda girl! It would unsettle me otherwise 😂

So I could go for a 40s house and furnish with Edwardian I suppose as that's not beyond the realms of possibility - or is it?!

@HarryArry sounds amazing! I envisage my house with cosy lights, and filled with carefully sourced original items. I want a velvet sofa and I want curtains made with fabric from my chosen era.

I also want a birdcage.

I agree about the Dolls' Houses Past and Present site, it is a goldmine of information and it has a regular online magazine, too.

I would love to see pictures of everyone's dolls houses and miniatures 😀

I'll show you mine…

So this is the one I'm considering ... I've copied and pasted the advert

My mother was given this Triang dolls house in the 1940's. I loved playing with it when I was young and my own children did too. It is well worn and, for example, the bath does not have its taps any more. On the other hand it is furnished with some fabulous 1970's furniture and it has many delightful accessories such as a toaster complete with toast and an ironing board and iron plus cutlery, a mop, a dustpan and brush etc. There is certainly a lot to explore. The curtains are hand made with hand sewn beads. It is a little tatty around the edges and would benefit from some work, but it is definitely ready to be played with.

Just not sure it's exactly right?! I'm torn. Thoughts?

My Dad made my daughters a dolls house and my son a fort all by hand. I'm hoping they will one day pass them down to their own children.

He's not a toy maker, just amazingly handy and loves a project!

I haven’t, but I love following the instagram accounts of those who do.

Some of the detail is extraordinary.

Coxspurplepippin · 12/01/2023 09:54

ChocChipOwl, your post of 22.28 yesterday - that's my house! I don't have the basement bit though.

Minimoan, your houses are delightful.

ChocChipOwl · 12/01/2023 10:05

@Coxspurplepippin I love it! You'll have to show us inside!

Well I've gone for the Triang 1940s house. Got it for £40 and will collect later on today. First thing I'll do is clean and disinfect it (gently!) and then pop it on my apothecary drawers where it's going to live and have a think about how I'll start decorating it

I still have a wooden kitchen table and chairs complete with a set of tiny cutlery and a TV with stand (plastic) from the 60s when I played with my house. I think most of the other furniture was cheap plastic or home made and coming apart so is long gone. The little furniture I have left is displayed in a glass fronted book case (my parents' - probably from the 50s) waiting for its own house. I will probably have to sneak it in past my husband though.
