Does anyone have a dolls house? As a hobby?

I'm considering it and wanted to know if there were any enthusiasts out there

I have a lovely set of apothecary drawers on my now spare room and keep envisaging a genuine Edwardian or Victorian dolls house sat on it and then spending time sourcing period bits and pieces for it

Anyway, that's the current day dream and I wondered if anyone had a similar interest?

My grandma had five when I was a child. They became her hobby and I have many happy childhood memories of she and I visiting shops to furnish them, playing with them, redecorating them, etc.

She was never a serious collector and so they weren't reflective of any particular era - she just bought stuff we loved and we shoved it in there alongside Playdoh food I had made, pictures I had drawn to go on the walls and anything else we found that we liked. There was also a serious overcrowding problem in most of them as we could never resist buying extra family members and moving them in.

When she passed they were left to me in her will but unfortunately I only had space to keep one. The others were valued at very little so they have all gone for free to friends who have children and are now bringing great joy to another generation. 😊

And now I've spotted a 1920s house that could be a contender. It's 250 miles away up north but that's a small detail - I have family in that area.

I think I need to hold out for the Victorian / Edwardian house as that's where I think my heart lies

This is my hobby! I have several houses (see below)! I prefer older ‘vintage’ houses, and my houses date from two 100 years old Lines Brothers dolls houses, to several Triang dolls houses from the 1940/1950’s. It is a rather additive hobby!

My love of old house is the history contained within them. I love to imagine the children gone before who have played with and loved these houses. Sometimes there are little reminders - a couple of pieces of my furniture have names in child’s writing on the underneath!

Be aware that the older the house, the more expensive, as less of the much older houses (e.g. original Edwardian and Victorian dolls houses) have survived. They are also more sought after, as collectors wish to preserve historical originality.

There are far more of the 1940’s onwards Triang houses that survive, as more affordable to the general public, so were made in much greater numbers.
Many of the houses from this era mimic earlier house designs.

There was a maker called Hobbies, who produced detailed plans to make dolls houses at home. Some of the houses made from these plans still exist (dating from pre WW2), and are often beautifully crafted. The Hobbies houses are the houses that most remind me of the Edwardian ‘look’. Then you would have an original older vintage house in Edwardian style?

Be aware that buying through auction means paying auction fees, so can be an expensive way to purchase. eBay and FB marketplace/local FB groups are good hunting grounds for older houses/vintage dolls house furniture.

An excellent website/group to join is ‘Dolls House Past and Present’. Wonderful database of images of 20th/21st century dolls houses, dolls house furniture, plus so much information from very helpful forum members!
A lovely hobby to have!!

This is what I envisage when I think of the dolls house I'd like! This is Georgian style right?

I'm thinking a slightly well to do family live there and they have a bird in a birdcage. And velvet sofas

Christ I need to stop Grin literally just making it up now.

This is the up-to-date version of the one I kept. The design has barely changed at all since the late 80's.

No but I really want one!

ChocChipOwl · 11/01/2023 22:31

@Minimoan oh they look fantastic! And good tip re Hobbies. I sort of know what I want but have to recognise my limits - I know I can't do restoration work

I don't but a friend of mine and her daughter do. They go round car boot sales and buy them, do them up and sell them on. Although they have kept lots too.

My mum does! She has made a few with slightly different themes, but they all have scaled-down framed "paintings" of our family on the walls. So sweet :)

ginislife · 11/01/2023 22:43

I bought that blue one from a friends Dad for my 3 year old great niece for Christmas. He used to build them from kits and now he's and old and downsizing he's selling stuff off. I was shocked how expensive room sets are on the likes of EBay

ChocChipOwl · 11/01/2023 22:46

My daughter has just told me they are weird and creepy

Thoughts on this outrageous statement?

This is a Hobbies house in Edwardian style.

I love a dolls house. I did one up all 60s inspired and loved it but gave it away. Maybe I’ll start another one.I loved making all the furnishings.

DollsHouseDreams · 11/01/2023 23:17

I have one.

It can be a very expensive hobby if not careful! All the detail items to make it look like a real, miniature house (as opposed to a child's play house) add up considerably. I wanted one that looks old (late Georgian/early Victorian) inside and out, and I have an antique doll in it.

Scale is important. 1:12 scale is by far the most common and easy to get (in terms of furnishings and accessories and choice of houses) but the houses tend to be larger than imagined. 1:16 or 1:18 scale houses are more compact, but the scale accessories are not common or easily found which can be frustrating. Not all the furniture fits perfectly to that scale even if it's meant to, which can end up with some proportional issues. 1:12 scale would definitely be easier for that reason.

I get a lot of pleasure from my doll's house, I add bits and pieces to it continually so I see it as a kind of perpetually in progress, work of art (as opposed to a house to play with). I could never afford a real, original antique one, so mine is new but in an antique style (exterior) and the interior also looks antique because of the appropriate era decorations and accessories.

TitoMojito · 11/01/2023 23:21

I love dolls houses!

Battygirll · 12/01/2023 00:47

ChocChipOwl · 11/01/2023 17:49

@Battygirll 9 bedrooms! This is a mansion! Was it expensive?

No, about £80.

AnnieSnap · 12/01/2023 00:53

I have dreamed of having one for years, but couldn’t justify the cost for a nice one and the ongoing miniatures. In an ideal world (big premium bonds win), it would sit by a model railway and village (which we also don’t have). There would be lights in the windows of the dolls house, other buildings and train station.
