Can’t believe my dog did this!

We rehomed our lovely dog 2 years ago and he is now 4 years old. He came to us from a very loving home
(re homing was for a genuine reason) and with a very sweet nature. We’re so lucky he’s slotted into our family perfectly. He’s definitely ‘my’ dog though, doesn’t bother much with the kids.

Earlier this evening I was in the kitchen and my son and daughter were playing in the lounge (rather roughly I suspect 🙄) and my daughter fell off the sofa onto her face. She’s only 3 so was VERY upset, really crying her eyes out. I was sat on the floor with her in my arms cuddling her and the dog came up and sniffed around us and walked away. Next thing, he reappeared with DDs favourite teddy in his mouth. He plopped it into her lap and sort of nudged it further into her. He then just sat next to us with his head resting on her leg. I was gobsmacked! He has NEVER done anything remotely like that! He’s not a ‘fetch’ kind of dog, so it was obvious he was trying to comfort her rather than play a game. I know this sounds crazy and most dogs have moments like this but I just felt so overwhelmed in that moment of just how much dogs understand human emotions.
My husband came home and I told him and he was totally nonplussed and just said ‘oh that’s nice’ 🙄
So I’m telling you! Now excuse me whilst I go cuddle my emotionally intelligent marvel of a dog 😂

Oh my God that's so adorable. What a clever dog xxxxx

HPLikecraft · 09/01/2023 19:51

That's lovely! What a good boy.

I have a gentle and affectionate dog, but he's far too stupid to do anything like that.

SuperHandss · 09/01/2023 19:52

Adorable! The ultimate good boy

devildeepbluesea · 09/01/2023 19:53

Dogs are too good for humans.

💕💕💕

TheFutureIs · 09/01/2023 19:55

That is just the cutest thing! My little one would do the same for her friends at nursery when she was about 1, made my heart melt.

Hellocatshome · 09/01/2023 19:55

Thats fantastic I was waiting for the bit where Ddog got freaked out by the crying and bit her or something. Well done Ddog.

🐾💛

Winnebago · 09/01/2023 19:56

This! I knew he had a sweet nature but when I’ve seen things on social media of dogs doing really incredible things I’ve always thought ‘lovely but mine wouldn’t be intelligent enough’😂
I know it’s not ‘saves child from a paddling pool’ incredible but in that moment I just knew that he completely understood what she needed 💕

I saw your thread title and (as the owner of a dog five years into its puppy stage) thought ‘I can’-I did not expect that! What a beautiful dog you have,OP.

Winnebago · 09/01/2023 19:57

Sorry that was for @HPLikecraft

Well that’s gorgeous! Ddog has a slightly less adorable way to “fix” sad dd - once our dog licked dds face (while I was busy saying that she shouldn’t let the dog do that!) and licked up her nose- dd laughed really loudly, pushed ddog away but was obviously really happy. Few days later, dd fell over and hurt her leg, ddog took in that dd was crying and immediately thought “I know how to cheer her up” and started trying to stick her stinky dog tongue up dds nose.

every time anyone cries or is in pain in our house, the dog goes for the nose kiss. It’s rather revolting and means you have to move fast to be out of dog nose snog range. It’s pretty cute she remembered what made dd laugh though, why couldn’t it have been something cute though?!

beastlyslumber · 09/01/2023 19:59

That's adorable! What a good boy.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/01/2023 19:59

Wasn't expecting that when I opened the thread. What a lovely post. And what a lovely happy dog you have got. ❤️

purpleme12 · 09/01/2023 20:00

God that is so beautiful I already love your dog

RogersOrganismicProcess · 09/01/2023 20:01

I’m not a dog person and your DDogs kindness has melted my heart. What a sweet heart.

SpentDandelion · 09/01/2023 20:01

You have a beautiful dog there.
Dogs have an enormous amount of empathy, apart from my mum's who left here lying on the ground after she took a fall whilst out walking and plodded off home, no interest in raising alarm , mum found her asleep on her front lawn.

Timeforachangeisitnot · 09/01/2023 20:01

Thats just lovely OP. What an empathetic dog you have.

My boy is similar, always first to comfort someone who,is upset, or place a paw on someone who is showing signs of stress.

They are lovely creatures and so good at reading their people.

Cinecitta · 09/01/2023 20:01

What a darling! An honorary member of the family.
I hope he got a big cuddle and lovies..

picklemewalnuts · 09/01/2023 20:01

How lovely!

Alittlelost0 · 09/01/2023 20:02

Oh I love these cute dog stories! We are three weeks in with a new puppy and today my one year old was crying as she was stuck on a table in the playroom and he ran in and I was panicking running after him incase he was rough but he just fussed around her and rounded me up to get there faster! I so hope he can one day be as lovely as your Ddog OP!
