Noises that give you the RAGE

You know, the ones that don't just irritate you, but its almost instant RAGE when they happen.. there's just something about them that really gets to you.

I'll preface this by saying i'm Neurodivergent and particularly sensitive to noises, i'm aware they might not bother anyone else.

My biggest one is the sound of the dog licking things. carpet, himself... just that awful repetitive moist licky noise. UGH
Also his bark is another one.. think thats just because it makes me jump every time (usually barking at squirrels in the garden)

Beeping, couple of the kids games have a constant beep that i can't tolerate and they have to either go play elsewhere or use headphones... same with tv programmes where they're in a medical setting and there is the monitor beep.

Certain tones of roadwork/building noises, like stone cutting, or the drone of some of the generators they use... feels like its just living in the base of your skull.

Before anyone asks.. i've taken to wearing noise cancelling earplugs lately.. its sweet relief!

What are yours?

People face timing in public

Yes! WTF is that all about!? And talking on speaker while on the train or another public place. Just why!?

Scooopsahoy · 08/01/2023 13:17

Someone having a loud mobile phone conversation in a public place. And yes it is different to listening to two people having a conversation. Only hearing one side of the conversation sets me on edge and just doesn’t feel ‘right’.

LookItsMeAgain · 08/01/2023 13:20

My neighbours tinkly wind chimes.

Particularly when they leave them up all year round when they can't sit out in the garden and 'enjoy' them themselves. I don't mind if someone wants to put up wind chimes and they sit out in their garden to enjoy them, but these neighbours just don't.

They should be banned from built up areas. Garden centres should not be allowed to sell them unless the person provides their address and if it's in a built up area, they should be refused.

I'm still doing the majority of my work from home so hear them throughout the day. Doesn't matter if I'm in the house or in my home office, they are tinkling away in their garden. I can even hear them now.

Elsiebear90 · 08/01/2023 13:22

People sniffing and clearing their throats, I used to work with a couple of men that must have had allergy or sinus problems as all day long every day for years they were constantly sniffing and it drove me mad. Children screaming, children coughing (it’s always so loud and they never cover their mouths), people cracking their knuckles, kissing noises.

Mrsjayy · 08/01/2023 13:22

The noise TV chefs make with spoons and glass bowls why can't they just spoon mayo /oil/dressing out why do they have to clink clink it, gives me the absolute rage !

WildRosie · 08/01/2023 13:23

A local horticulturist who has excessively loud train/truck style horns fitted to his work van. The noise from those, especially if you're not expecting it, is enough to give anyone a heart attack. Unfortunately, said horns are not illegal. I hate the silly bastard and his vehicle too.

Awrite · 08/01/2023 13:24

Cars idling.

Lawn mowers.

Extra infuriating if it's early morning and I'm still in bed.

808Kate1 · 08/01/2023 13:24

People in close proximity eating crisps or an apple. They might as well be using a microphone.

Remona · 08/01/2023 13:25

People slamming car doors. More specifically, the girl over the road who is backwards and forwards all day every day and when she returns home has to slam every door on the car plus her fucking boot.

As soon as I hear one slam I’m on edge waiting for the others.

BakedTattie · 08/01/2023 13:26

The sound of my husband, in general.

the noise of football on the radio. The commentary. Gives me a migraine.

background noise of adverts, makes me feel ill.

any kind of constant noise.

Curfewgull1 · 08/01/2023 13:29

When someone scrapes the plate with their cutlery whilst eating. Makes me totally cringe.

Awrite · 08/01/2023 13:30

Also, the noise of doors, cupboards etc being opened or closed quickly. Why can't people (dh and ds) place these doors?

Ihateboris · 08/01/2023 13:33

Whistling

kingsleysbootlicker · 08/01/2023 13:34

Also ND and really senstive to most noises. Especially repetitive noises that don't follow a set pattern, like basketballs hitting concrete

Another one is Vocal fry. I can't listen to or watch anything where the actors speak this way, it completely ruins the programme

Sashimito · 08/01/2023 13:38

I'm autistic and particularly sensitive to certain noises.

I can put up with a lot of them if I have nothing else to do but am then unable to do anything else.

For loud noises like ambulances I stand completely still. It also helps that i can roughly predict how long I'll have to endure it.

Then there are sounds that I am unable to tune out and therefore can't do what I need to. These are things such as AC when trying to sleep, beeping when trying to concentrate, listening to someone when there is background noise (especially on the phone or podcasts). All my focus and energy is taken by blocking out the noise.

And worst of all are the sounds of ick. The ones I can't tune out but that are also gross.

People chewing with their mouths open

Sniffing

Dogs licking things

Bones/joints cracking

Certain accents/tones of voice.

HandbagsnGladrags · 08/01/2023 13:38

The slurping of food and crunching of crisps.
Car engines left idling for ages.
Hedge strimmers.
Shrieking kids.

America12 · 08/01/2023 13:40

@GlassOnions I was in a cafe and there was a woman chatting to her mother who was propped up on the table. Good half an hour. I had to leave 🤢

theblackradiator · 08/01/2023 13:41

loud yawners. It absolutely gives me the rage . dp does it and I want to punch him in the face every single f**kin time.

TheaBrandt · 08/01/2023 13:43

Rustling in the theatre. Great grown adults stuffing their faces as they can’t possibly not eat (and rustle) for the duration of play / film. Everyone in the vicinity hates you.

littlegreenheart · 08/01/2023 13:47

Lately it's people using their mobile phones as a kind of broadcast speaker. Whether it's a regular phone/video call on speakerphone, streaming video, or just music, they're letting it all hang out on full volume without even bothering to use earbuds or headphones. I can understand the logic if it's a group of people watching or listening together, but it hardly ever is. A few days go, I was even next to a couple sitting together who EACH had a separate video on full blast on their mobiles. It was like duelling banjos, or something.

MadameOvary81 · 08/01/2023 13:48

Repeated coughing! My poor partner is currently ill, but the constant hacking...i'm tearing my bloody hair out. I'm sympathetic to the feeling sick yet I feel utterly murderous. I also hate loud, high-pitched sneezes. Thankfully, there's been none of those this week or a divorce might have been on the cards.

The sound of the car beeping at me when you put it in reverse. It's at a pitch that is completely intolerable. I've asked old iron lung to turn it off....but alas, it still beeps. Maybe that divorce is still on the table. :)

bravelittletiger · 08/01/2023 13:48

People coughing

My husband breathing or snoring at night

Lowest common denominator "I'm mad me" chat on radio stations

Children's toys going off somewhere you can't reach

1000yellowdaisies · 08/01/2023 13:50

Cars driving down the street with really loud, gutteral engine sound.... the ones that are messed about with by idiot boy racers to sound purposefully noisy. I despise it.

Remona · 08/01/2023 13:50

Oh yes, strimmers. They blight many a summer morning.

I live in an area where there are a lot of retired people so gardening isn’t restricted to weekends. In the summer it’s either someone with a strimmer or a lawnmower every day. It’s the stopping and starting that’s so irritating. When you’re trying to work from home and you’ve got this constant buzzing and droning like an angry bee, it’s infuriating.

Dippydinosaurus · 08/01/2023 13:51

Neighbour playing basketball - the thud, thud, thud noise all summer long goes straight through me
Noisy eaters
Ticking clocks
Screaming children
Sniffing

Don't mind constant low white noise like the rain or a fan but hate any intermittent or loud sound
