Noises that give you the RAGE

You know, the ones that don't just irritate you, but its almost instant RAGE when they happen.. there's just something about them that really gets to you.

I'll preface this by saying i'm Neurodivergent and particularly sensitive to noises, i'm aware they might not bother anyone else.

My biggest one is the sound of the dog licking things. carpet, himself... just that awful repetitive moist licky noise. UGH
Also his bark is another one.. think thats just because it makes me jump every time (usually barking at squirrels in the garden)

Beeping, couple of the kids games have a constant beep that i can't tolerate and they have to either go play elsewhere or use headphones... same with tv programmes where they're in a medical setting and there is the monitor beep.

Certain tones of roadwork/building noises, like stone cutting, or the drone of some of the generators they use... feels like its just living in the base of your skull.

Before anyone asks.. i've taken to wearing noise cancelling earplugs lately.. its sweet relief!

What are yours?

Lately it's people using their mobile phones as a kind of broadcast speaker. Whether it's a regular phone/video call on speakerphone, streaming video, or just music, they're letting it all hang out on full volume without even bothering to use earbuds or headphones. I can understand the logic if it's a group of people watching or listening together, but it hardly ever is. A few days go, I was even next to a couple sitting together who EACH had a separate video on full blast on their mobiles. It was like duelling banjos, or something.

Aaargh yes, I forgot this on my list. Should be illegal.

Tamarindtree · 08/01/2023 13:51

Any music played down the phone whilst you are on hold. Usually completely inappropriate.

Loud music in shops. Any music in shops.

Anyone that deliberately turns a burp into a long and loud belch, which they think is funny.

Adele ‘singing’.

Billie Eilish ‘whispering’.

Whispering in general.

The low battery warning beep on my MiL’s fire alarm that has been beeping for at least 5 years.
apparently she’s “tuned it out”

Whistling

I must drive people mad then☹️

I whistle all the time. I’ve always done it since I badgered my dad, a keen whistler, to teach me when I was about 5 or 6.

I often clock people looking at me when I’m out shopping for instance and I’m whistling. I’ve always just assumed they’re surprised to hear a woman whistling whereas it may be that I’m just annoying the hell out of them.

Polystyrene being handled in any way, and especially when it touches other polystyrene

this one’s a bit niche but… the sound of people “double biting” food, like a sandwich, where they take two small bites before chewing. The second bite is always really wet and whiskery sounding. My late grandmother’s gentleman friend used to do it and it has always stuck with me and gone right through me.

midsomermurderess · 08/01/2023 13:57

Loud eating. I had a colleague who made such a racket eating a sandwich. And then came the fruit. Who knew it was possible to make so much noise eating soft fruit. I felt murderous. I’d have to leave the room, walk around the block and just pray it was over when I got back. Quite, quite mad, of course.

midsomermurderess · 08/01/2023 13:59

I’ve just seen leaf blowers mentioned. Yes, they are torturous. So, so loud and so bloody inefficient they have to be run for an age. I think they should be banned, it’s noise pollution.

hadenoughforever · 08/01/2023 14:00

Kind of makes me relieved to be partially deaf reading this thread. My eldest did can’t tolerate the scrunching or otherwise of foil.

inthedeepshade · 08/01/2023 14:01

Dyson hand dryers. People have made less noise blasting off into space.

Tummytroubles22 · 08/01/2023 14:02

People blowing soup, I can’t explain how ragey it makes me.

TommyShelby · 08/01/2023 14:05

My DHs cough. Sometimes he coughs so much it sounds like he is going to be sick. I physically cannot stand it.

Members of the public phoning into radio stations. It makes me want to turn inside out with second hand embarrassment. I turn the radio off every time

Deathraystare · 08/01/2023 14:07

I am quite chilled about most noise - have to be I work in mental health - every day alarms go off/screams/shouting but I really think people should listen through headphones on the bus. Mostly their music is shite. Even worse when they 'sing' along!

Also there is a bloke in the cafe and when he isn't muttering racist remarks under his breath (aimed at the very nice owners but not so they hear) he smacks his chops when he eats. Yes I know I am a hypocrite as I slurp my tea (makes it taste better you know!)

People chewing with their mouths open making THAT noise. People constantly 'popping' gum.

High pitched childrens' screams/wails
Whistling
Yappy little rat dogs

People who cannot argue properly to save their lives. They repeat and repeat getting louder and then start clapping their hands together as if to emphasise.

Repetitive banging or sounds I don't know where they are coming from. People crunching, people with annoying voices, background sounds in songs that when you hear it you can't unhear it! People scuffing their shoes when they walk, children whining haha and probably many many more!

Repetitive sounds send me doolally. I've got epilepsy and there have been so many instances when hearing noises like that, genuinely send me over the edge and make me tic.

The ticking of a clock

I love the sound of a ticking clock, I find it very soothing.

Cars idling.

Lawn mowers.

Extra infuriating if it's early morning and I'm still in bed.

Especially if it's a diesel car. 😫

totallybonafido · 08/01/2023 14:12

When people don't use the door handle to pull the latch back before gently closing a door and then releasing the handle. Instead just shoving it shut without using the handle so that the latch makes a huge bang. My ILs all do it constantly, including at night when people are trying to sleep and it drives me insane.

I too love the sound of a ticking clock. I love it when I visit a castle or stately home and there’s a grandfather clock ticking away. It is very soothing.

I think it must stem from childhood. My parents had a ticking alarm clock in their bedroom. My ex-DH could not abide the sound.

That's not safe! 😬

Can you take it down and replace the battery?

Climbles · 08/01/2023 14:17

ND here too.
I have an over reactive startle reflex so any sudden loud noise makes me jump and gives me a shot of adrenaline.
i have lots of specific things that set me off but my biggest is whispering. Can’t stand it when anyone does it but if someone tries to whisper in my ear I find it physically difficult not to punch them. Even thinking about it now is making me angry.
Too many noises (radio, talking, sound of the road for example) makes me stressed and panicky too.

Madeintowerhamlets · 08/01/2023 14:17

Agree with most of these. I think I’ve always been quite sensitive to certain sounds.
Loud sneezing, yawning & whistling plus slurping I find very jarring.
I also hate really emotional, ballard type music such as a Celine Dion being blasted out on the radio if I’m somewhere where I can’t turn it off.
Vocal fry particularly when someone is chatting right behind you or on the phone.
Mariachi bands playing on your tube carriage!

This made me laugh. My 4 year old absolutely hates them.

Candyflosscrochet · 08/01/2023 14:22

My DH laughing which then turns into a cough....winds me up so much and completely ruins the moment.
My DH being sick...like he his trying to bring up is organs....I can do it quietly, so can the kids (actually my DM also is very loud when being ill, obviously just some people are).
My DH snoring that's not really a snore, just dry loud breathing....makes me want to poke him in the eye.
Let me be clear that I do actually love my DH very much, just not when he's ill or sleeping 😆
Currently my neighbour is poorly with a cough that is driving me insane. Any time day or night and is the same (?maybe it's recorded deliberately to wind me up?). I'll forgive that though as I'm sure me shouting at my children wind's them up!!

whatisforteamum · 08/01/2023 14:38

Coughing
Sniffing
Burping
My dh scraping his hairbrush over his balding bit.makes me want to gag.🤣

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/01/2023 14:39

High pitched, tuneless whistling. Especially in supermarkets 😡

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 08/01/2023 14:42

The dull background noise of heavy bass music. It stems from a neighbour from hell and we had it 24/7 with then periods of very loud music as well. Now if I hear any music with heave bass it freaks me out and I go in a massive rage and have to put earplugs in no matter where I am.
