Noises that give you the RAGE

You know, the ones that don't just irritate you, but its almost instant RAGE when they happen.. there's just something about them that really gets to you.

I'll preface this by saying i'm Neurodivergent and particularly sensitive to noises, i'm aware they might not bother anyone else.

My biggest one is the sound of the dog licking things. carpet, himself... just that awful repetitive moist licky noise. UGH
Also his bark is another one.. think thats just because it makes me jump every time (usually barking at squirrels in the garden)

Beeping, couple of the kids games have a constant beep that i can't tolerate and they have to either go play elsewhere or use headphones... same with tv programmes where they're in a medical setting and there is the monitor beep.

Certain tones of roadwork/building noises, like stone cutting, or the drone of some of the generators they use... feels like its just living in the base of your skull.

Before anyone asks.. i've taken to wearing noise cancelling earplugs lately.. its sweet relief!

What are yours?

Stirring and pouring sounds. Omg let me out!

PaperMonster · 08/01/2023 16:35

Eating noises. I know that’s a common one. My OH and his family make horrendous noises and I can’t sit and eat with them.

my cat yowling at me for more food it won’t eat.

the screech of speeding motorbikes going past our house.

the noise of lorries idling at a nearby roundabout.

alarms.

Helpmesortit · 08/01/2023 16:36

Whispering 😵‍💫

MarvinGerard · 08/01/2023 16:37

I only skim-read some of the responses so far, so I could have missed it, but surprised no one has yet mentioned misophonia in connection with this subject. Yes, there’s a proper disorder which describes not only hatred but an almost uncontrollable emotional response of anger and sometimes other stuff like unwanted arousal, in response to sounds. It’s particularly linked to mouth sounds like swallowing, noisy yawning, throat clearing, etc. and sufferers are far more likely to get triggered by loved ones than strangers. Basically the closer the relationship and more you love the person, the more likely their sounds will do more than just drive you crazy, but will torture you.

My wife is a sufferer and however hard I try I often trigger her rage by doing something as innocuous as yawning or swallowing. She lives with noise cancelling headphones on her head, which saves our evenings, but she also has misokinesia and gets triggered from visual cues such as me touching my face.

It’s a complete curse to be honest, and no help available from doctors. There are some snake oil therapists around who claim to be able to help, at least one of these who is a “big name” in the misophonia research field I’m quite sure is a fraud.

AssumingDirectControl · 08/01/2023 16:49

Also ND.

Loads of noises wind me up. Whistling, though, there should be a special hell for whistlers. My ex husband got into the habit of whistling. I genuinely think it’s the main reason for our divorce. It made me want to kill him.

Sniffing. Loud sudden sneezes. Snoring. Loud burps (also a contributing factor to my divorce). Coughing. Dogs barking. High pitched squealing. That particular tone of voice some men speak in when they’re a bit drunk and bolshy. Car alarms. Humming. Drilling. Hammering. The sound the tannoy makes in my local county court. School bells. Beeping of lorries etc. Loud motorbikes and noisy cars. Seagull chicks.

TangledWebOfDeception · 08/01/2023 16:58

I didn't mention misophonia because it comes up on every thread of this type and since we have had many of them over the years I just assumed everyone knows about it by now.

I don't think it's a misophonia in my case* because it's just this one sound in combination with the texture element that has that effect on me. It's also a momentary thing and doesn't trigger anything further like fight or flight response and/or feeling sick or anxious. I'm perfectly able to control my response to it after that first instant reaction, I just really don't like it.

*I'm not particularly knowledgeable about it so can't make an entirely definite assertion.

Tidsleytiddy · 08/01/2023 17:12

Those radio adverts where the person speaking has to say all the terms and conditions in a rush. I cover my ears. It makes me feel such rage

RainbowZebraWarrior · 08/01/2023 17:16

YolayCaprese · 08/01/2023 16:24

Mouth noises, particularly DP and DD. I sit for meals with them but by the end by of the day just that clicking sound people do before they speak goes through me and makes me cross.

Engine running on vehicles. Next door are very sociable and so many evenings a couple will be leaving and one goes back in and the driver leaves the engine running. For ages. I hate it so much, such an intrusive sound.

Other next doors ridiculous whooping laugh coming through the walls at all hours.

The pedestrian sounder on our electric car. Sounds like ghosts .

Idling engines give me the red mist. I have to reach for my noise cancelling headphones.

I'm also Neuro Diverse. I remember filling in the Sensory section of the questionnaire prior to assessment. I wrote about Idling engines and then went on to rant about how it was illegal anyway, blah blah. My psychiatrist said "rarely have I seen a form completed in such great detail, Rainbow"

Spanielsarepainless · 08/01/2023 17:18

Children crying. I get the urge to make their faces acquainted with a plastic carrier bag.

PetitPorpoise · 08/01/2023 17:19

People counting

People speaking as though they are going to run out of breath.

(A combination of these two is Derek Jacobi doing "one pontypine, two pontypine" on Night Garden. I have to leave the room.)

Music that is on too low that you can't hear it. Either turn it up or off: not fizzing away in the background like a bluebottle.

My husband's chesty cough in the morning. I know he can't help it but it makes me feel Xmas Angry

Definitely my dog slurping licking his paws especially as he starts doing it just as I'm trying to get to sleep. Also my husband's cough and clearing his throat. I know people can't help coughing but this is just awful.

jennakitt · 08/01/2023 17:25

People who do a clicking or lip smacking noise, not sure which it is, when they're explaining something.

Smacking lips
Audible gulp when drinking
Chewing noisily
Sneezing unnecessarily loudly as some do as a scream/roar.

OldSchoolCasualty · 08/01/2023 17:39

Sniffing of any kind, my whole body tenses up.
People scrolling reels/facebook videos in public places i.e staff room. Infuriating, I have to leave.

AssumingDirectControl · 08/01/2023 17:49

Sneezing unnecessarily loudly as some do as a scream/roar.

My husband sneezes loudly which irritates me, and I always try to minimise the noise and instead make a quiet “mmph” sound, which irritates him 😂

HoppingAndHoping · 09/01/2023 09:19

Music in the background when I'm trying to concentrate unless I'm in the mood for music, I get to pick it, it works with what I'm doing and I can switch/repeat however I want.

OR if it's so loud that it drowns out everything. (But that clearly wouldn't be background music)

And then just whatever it is that's getting to me in that specific moment. It varies weirdly enough.

(Except for Styrofoam. And carton - like when packing moving boxes - scraping togethe).

I'm also ND.

SinnerBoy · 09/01/2023 09:45

Yes, I hate that as well!

Dance / techno music, I've always hated it.

WandaWonder · 09/01/2023 09:49

There is certain lip smacking I tend to find with some newsreaders

And also when people have like a small piece of food and lips smack and eat and talk, it is hard to exactly explain

eurochick · 09/01/2023 09:50

Metal on metal - a metal spoon scraping a metal saucepan has me running from the kitchen.

People who text with a click sound at each character.

People who play beeping games, music or videos without headphones in public places.

knackeredcat · 09/01/2023 10:20

ND, CPTSD and misophonic, so practically everything. Getting worse now I'm menopausal too! 😰

YY to anything to do with day to day sounds like noisy eating, drinking, coughing, Facetiming, etc. Barking dogs who are just moved into yards/gardens and never walked. Shrill cackling voices, of which there are many where I live - male and female. Noisy children (beyond a bit of playing, laughing, etc.) - ditto - why one in particular just screams and screams (not ND/SEN either). Nobody seems to care about their behaviours encroaching on others.

Autotuned and bassy music. It's beyond a generational dislike, it actually triggers some sort of flight or flight response in me. Even hearing it in stalling cars has me on the verge of panic attacks sometimes.

FIREWORKS. They never affected me until I moved here (West Yorkshire) as they are CONSTANT.

I'm constantly wearing noise cancelling headphones or earplugs depending on context these days. And I'm aware I'm a bit of an extreme example, but working on it 😳

cassiatwenty · 09/01/2023 11:40

Little children + airplane, so sorry but this is pure hell for me

Cousin eating peanuts and smacking around (whack////)

Children screaming whilst shopping

THIS, oh my word, I could start shooting them when they start, I know what you mean

cassiatwenty · 09/01/2023 11:41

Is that Misophonia or...?

1994girl · 09/01/2023 11:42

Slurping

AffIt · 09/01/2023 11:46

I'm quite sensitive to noise and can be a bit over-reactive (I spend a lot of time wearing noise-cancelling headphones!).

The two that REALLY induce the red mist are people sniffing phlegm into their through (a noise I can best describe as 'schnork-groimphle') and that really irritating 'ah, that's better!' gasp that some make after taking a sip of tea.

I want to scream, "It's a cup of tea, not a cure for cancer, FFS!"

cassiatwenty · 09/01/2023 11:48

LOL I know exactly how you feel, I can just imagine it right now

Not a cure for cancer, precisely
