Does anyone else hate January?

The Christmas celebrations are over, Christmas lights and decorations are coming down, not as much money left due to Christmas spending, feeling fat and unhealthy due to all the food eaten over Christmas, cold and wet days, dark nights and mornings.

I don’t mind February as much, but I start to feel better in March when we hit spring and the nights start getting longer.

I don’t mind the dark nights as such, but I hate it getting dark as early as 4pm!

January is the worst month. I was supposed to be born in January but thankfully the fates intervened, because it is depressing for all the reasons you mention.
I feel much happier when February comes and bulbs start emerging.

asblindasabat · 02/01/2023 00:44

That should read that in March the days start to get longer!

Absolutely today was the worst felt totally depressed doesn't help that it's Sunday which I loathe anyway !! January has got to be the most depressing month ever.

Inspecto · 02/01/2023 00:45

I like the January sales. Retail therapy.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 02/01/2023 00:46

It is by a long way my least favourite month of the year. We’re going on holiday in February which will make it a bit easier to get through this year.

Yes I have to admit I felt a bit strange today too. Think it was because I spent all day cleaning my house and when I was finished and ready to go out for a walk with the dog at about 4pm, it was starting to get dark!

I love January as it is my child's birthday close to the end. So once Christmas celebrations end, we start party planning, this makes it more fun 🤩

TerfOnATrain · 02/01/2023 00:49

Yes! I don’t mind winter generally speaking but I always suffer from anxiety during January.

Such short days, thinking about increased energy bills, cold and damp, long month from last payday. Elderly relatives catching illness or dying. It’s all so depressing isn’t it?

In an ideal world you would escape to a sunnier place to break it up.

I think I should make it an annual event that I go on holiday to Australia for a week or so every January to catch the sun!

It's definitely the worst month but I don't hate it.
It's dark, cold and miserable but it's also a good time to focus on things as there are less distractions. It's always nice to meet up with friends too as they're probably feeling the same.

SecretVictoria · 02/01/2023 00:50

Hate it. Always seems 800 days long. Bloody awful month.

Well no I don’t hate it, I guess my title is a bit of an exaggeration, however, I do agree that it is by far my least favourite month of the year.

Oh I know!! December flew in but I just know January will drag, as it always does!

January is a month of low expectations, fewer calls on your time and less pressure to perform. Yet its a time of new beginnings and making plans.

I feel February is worse. You feel you need a kick up the arse to get moving and it's still cold and dark and you've long finished the Christmas chocolates.

I dont hate any month, they've all got something going for them. I'm loving the last few days of post-Xmas loafing before life starts up again.

Velda · 02/01/2023 00:58

I love January. Snowdrop time! Find out where there are “snowdrop walks” in your area and get out to see them. Enjoy staying in and reading the books you got for Xmas. Comfort food like casserole with dumplings, chicken soup etc. And usually a good time to clear out, do DIY or decorate while you’re feeling fresh and positive.

IveHadEnoughNowFfs · 02/01/2023 00:59

I don’t feel human or in anyway interested in life until March! I wonder sometimes if it’s seasonal depression. December January and February can all get in the bin.

sweetkitty · 02/01/2023 01:01

One of my children’s birthdays is right at the end of January and apart from that January and February are both rubbish month IMO. It’s cold, dark and miserable. I suffer from SAD can you tell 🤣 I would fast forward straight to March if I could

Daisypod · 02/01/2023 01:01

Yep January sucks, my birthday is next week and I'm already dreading it as I know no one likes January, no one wants to go out, no one has any money. January is bad but a birthday in January really is the pits.

MessiTheGoat · 02/01/2023 01:03

My birthday is in January and so are both of my children's birthdays.

I hate having our birthdays then. People always comment 'it's worse having a December birthday'. I don't agree, I feel everyone is in relatively good spirits in December. People seem to just wish January away. They don't want to eat more cake or spend more money etc. And it's dark and miserable with an eternity to wait on a pay.

I hate that three quarters of my household have our birthdays over and done with so close after Christmas. I always just say mine 'doesn't matter' as I'm sandwiched in between my children and nobody can be arsed doing much anyway! 😂

JamSandle · 02/01/2023 01:05

I dont mind it as a good month for me to save and get my house in order so to speak.

PacificallyRequested · 02/01/2023 01:06

I like it. You don't have to do anything in January, other than get through it. It's low key. I do my crafts, drink tea and eat biscuits. I start buying spring flowers to have around the house, and all my winter decorations (candle holders, fairy lights) stay out.
I've got a day out planned the last weekend in January that I'm really looking forward to. Find the joy in January, it's there!

echt · 02/01/2023 01:37

This recent thread is full of lovely ideas for getting through this. For myself it's July/August (Melbourne) that I find hard yakka after 2022's notably horrible, loooooong winter.

My poor daughter has her birthday in January. Sad to know that in years to come, nobody will want to celebrate with her.

mackthepony · 02/01/2023 01:52

Yeah it's tough out there

somewhereovertherain · 02/01/2023 01:57

Love January mainly it’s because it’s when we get to go on holiday. Currently sat waiting for a flight to Phuket from Bangkok.

due to our jobs January is the main month we holiday.
