Anyone want to add to my ever increasing list of words/terms that are just really bloody annoying?

There are many but this year I've been able to add even more:

Weaponise
Twixmas
You do you

Feel free to add yours!

I hate with a passion "watch this space"

It always gives me this response: No I will not take orders from you and I'm not interested in it anyway

SMabbutt · 05/01/2023 15:22

Borrow me, as in can you borrow me some milk. NO I CAN'T. I can lend you some milk or you can borrow some from me.
Innit.
Living his best life - especially when referring to pets.
Whatever as a standalone response, usually from a stroppy teen.

Whatwouldnanado · 05/01/2023 17:22

"Can I get....?" No you can't you aresehole, it's "Please may I have?"

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2023 17:28

I really don’t understand all the angst over ‘can I get?’. I don’t say it myself but it’s not as if it’s confusing in any way at all. 🤷‍♀️

Cam22 · 05/01/2023 17:38

Hate the following. Some are not just jargon but plain wrong.

Going forward
Impacting on…
Bubba
Chest of draws
Reign in (for example that behaviour.)
For all intensive purposes…
Tow the line
Could of or should of…
Should have rang… (Have seen journalists blunder here. 🤪)

And more!!!

People assume it's American, which is anathema.

"Please may I have" is very old-fashioned as we've kind of moved away from forelock tugging when asking for goods in a shop, and would make the user sound like something out of the 1950s. Order of formality in modals of permission is can-could-may/might so the user above might be imagining they're talking to royalty or something, but frankly, would just sound silly.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/01/2023 18:03

@PAFMO, well, it is American, but the (other) reason people get irritated IMO is because ‘can I get’ implies that you want to climb over the counter etc. and grab it yourself.

The alternative doesn’t have to be ‘Please may I have…’
‘Can I please have…’ doesn’t sound like something from the 1950s.
(And yes, before anyone says it, I do know the official difference between can and may, but in this context it’s not worth bothering about.)

“Don’t at (@) me”

A favourite of that gobshite James O’Brien

You've made my day just for calling James O'Brien a gobshite. He really is. And that's a word not used enough. I need to say it more often.

Happy to oblige 😊
I used to listen to LBC all the time up to 3 years ago but I can’t even stand to “hate listen” to him anymore - it’s not good for my blood pressure 😂

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 05/01/2023 20:18

When people say they were ‘pressurised’ into doing something. I’m sure people used to say ‘pressured’. Either way, I don’t like the word ‘pressurised!’

SinnerBoy · 05/01/2023 20:45

I say "Can I have.... Please."

Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2023 20:51

I don't say 'can I have?' I generally say 'I'll have a (whatever it is ) please'. But if I heard some utter the words 'can I get?' it wouldn't be a big deal. Of course they aren't going to get it themselves. Hmm

Once they have been served they've 'got' it after all.

Wilff · 05/01/2023 20:51

When people people respond with the Complete Opposite and laugh hysterically.
Ie: visitor in someones home being offered a drink "do you have Xyz?" ..
NO ! hahaha ha only joking hahaha

JamSandle · 05/01/2023 20:58

When Americans start videos with:
Let's get into it
Or
Before we get into it

Ugh!

SueblueNZ · 05/01/2023 21:00

Agreeance. "We're in agreeance over ..."
It's either 'agree' or 'agreement'.
Also, 'utilise' when 'use' would do. "You can utilise an app for that." Grrrrrr

forageintheforest · 05/01/2023 22:07

"To die for." Very little is worth dying for, certainly not a view .

One of the meanings of the verb 'to get' is 'to receive'.
'I got a letter from my sister yesterday' is an example of it used in this way.
Saying 'can I get a coffee?' really doesn't imply that you wish to clamber over counters and help yourself, just that you'd like to receive a coffee 😁☕

JamSandle · 05/01/2023 23:40

Not really keen on 'fab' 🤣

Marynotsocontrary · 06/01/2023 20:12

Gotten is fine where I am.
It doesn't deserve the hate it gets on MN.

Curated
Gutted

Yes, curate...
argghhhh!

WandaWonder · 06/01/2023 23:26

"You are just jealous"

Tessisme · 06/01/2023 23:35

My 10yo's latest one is 'I'll search it up', as in 'search for it', referring to an internet search. Sometimes he corrects himself when he sees the look on my face. Other times he just likes to wind me up!!

I really don't think it gets a lot of hate. Hate is a very strong word! It seems to be trendy to use that word when you dislike something.

Also,( not aimed at you Mary) people aren't ^haters° when they just disagree with you.

Well, maybe 'dislike intensely' would be better, but 'gotten' does seem to evoke strong feelings of some kind. I've noticed because it's a word I use.

On these sort of threads people have said they hate it, that it's vile, it makes them shudder, it makes their skin crawl and somebody once said that it gives them an insight into the nature of the sort of person who uses it...
Strong stuff indeed!
