Anyone want to add to my ever increasing list of words/terms that are just really bloody annoying?

There are many but this year I've been able to add even more:

Weaponise
Twixmas
You do you

Feel free to add yours!

Mumsnet specific :

'Didn't want to read and run'.

How are on earth does the OP know you've read ?!?! Is of absolutely no help at all.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2023 00:09

Mac ‘n cheese.
It’s macaroni cheese!

ACJane · 01/01/2023 00:55

Win big/save big. So clumsy.

The incorrect use of shop as a command, as in "shop our new collection". Surely one would buy from it or go shopping but cannot just "shop" it.

Drop, as in our new trainers collection drops on January 3rd.

Funnywonder · 01/01/2023 09:14

Palava. Just spotted this on a thread for the eleventy billionth time. It's palaver.

Pearl664 · 01/01/2023 09:21

Curate. As in putting together a collection, not the vicar! It's everywhere and used in the most ridiculous contexts.

Or ‘polava’ as I’ve seen it on here before.

Mac ‘n cheese.

And "Grill cheese," for cheese toastie.

Vitriolinsanity · 01/01/2023 12:33

"iconic" as used by Zoe Ball at least 4 times every sodding morning.

Ditto to REEsearch. Drives me mad - even when it’s in an ad asking for donations to Cancer REEsearch.

You'd think that they, of all people, would know better, wouldn't you?

One that really bugs me is the phrase so beloved of banks (the ones that still have branches open on the high street, that is):

'Visit us in branch'

SinnerBoy · 01/01/2023 12:52

I hate that, too. "Search up" is another one.

Oh yes. If something has been curated, it should be neatly labelled and in a museum drawer, not on a plate in a wanky restaurant.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/01/2023 14:22

‘Obligated’ - I’m seeing it everywhere lately - where the hell did that come from? Don’t tell me, from across the pond.
Whatever happened to good old ‘obliged’?

The Yanks seem to like extra syllables - see also ‘burglarised’ instead of ‘burgled’. Not to mention lately ‘coronated’ instead of ‘crowned’. And before anyone says it, yes, I know it is a word, but it refers to e.g. a lizard with some vaguely crown shaped growth on its head - not to the act of putting crown jewels on royal heads.

excelledyourself · 01/01/2023 15:41

'The tools'.

As in, 'you need to equip your child with the tools to manage this'

Gender. Its sex

And all the 'd' on this site. It makes posts unreadable referring to the ddog and dps and dgps and dssd ddsasssd dsdcd

Agree with both.
The use of D as a prefix on Mumsnet is so annoying!
And it's not shorter as someone tried to explain - for example, mum becomes DMum on here.
Basically it's to exclude outsiders. It gives me 'you can't sit with us!' vibes.

Fieldfly · 01/01/2023 17:16

‘Outwith’ wtf is that about. It is not a clever way of saying without.

EspeciallyDetermined · 01/01/2023 17:20

It isn't just MN though, the D terminology is used very widely on other internet forums and groups so it shouldn't seem exclusive

EspeciallyDetermined · 01/01/2023 17:41

Outwith is a perfectly normal word in Scotland, it's not an affectation. It means outside rather than without.

AlinaSquareQueen · 01/01/2023 18:38

I agree with loads of here, especially the very common use of ‘I text him’, instead of ‘I texted him’.

I came across one recently, which was the word fetching. It was on a holiday booking website and said ‘just fetching availability.. ‘. That word went out of date with Enid Blyton and Noddy books surely. It irrationally annoyed me!

Wilff · 01/01/2023 18:44

Dont know why, but I get really irritated when I hear the latest phrase "All Day Long " used to agree with something .. ugh

‘Outwith’ wtf is that about. It is not a clever way of saying without.

It means outside, often in respect of a set of parameters. It's got a long history:

en.wiktionary.org/wiki/outwith#:~:text=Etymology,equivalent%20to%20out%20%2B%E2%80%8E%20with.

From Middle English outwith, outewith, a transposed variant of Middle English withoute (“without”); equivalent to out +‎ with.

Wilff · 01/01/2023 18:51

I used to roll my eyes when a person replies to the question of "how are you doing?" by saying
LIVING THE DREAM

(however I've heard myself saying it recently Argh )

Isn't that "Awks" hahaha

pianaoff · 01/01/2023 18:52

Hubby

Older women calling other people's mums "mama" as is "happy new year 2nd mama"

RicherThanYews · 01/01/2023 21:57

What's wrong with REEsearch? And the other words in the exhaustive list as posted earlier. Should we be omitting vowels entirely?
