Did anyone else not realise that the film version of Matilda the musical wasn't being released on Netflix in the UK until next year? I was looking forward to watching it this afternoon. Is it just me?

It is available at all cinemas in the UK now x

AHelpfulHand · 28/12/2022 16:16

Its rubbish anyway. Nothing like the original Matilda

glamourousindierockandroll · 28/12/2022 16:17

I'm relieved to be honest. I took my son to see it at the cinema and i'd have been annoyed if it was available on Netflix after a couple of weeks.

It wasn't meant to be like the original it was based on the musical.

We have seen the musical 3x and loved the film version of it.

TheNumberfaker · 28/12/2022 16:18

Didn’t know it was coming to Netflix. We’ve seen the musical in person, (some of us twice) and DDs have seen the film at the cinema. Looking forward to seeing how Emma Thompson does Miss Trunchbull. I really should read the book sometime!

Just you!

MsNorris · 28/12/2022 16:18

Odd it wasn’t released in cinemas in my country, went straight to Netflix on Christmas Day. The original was much better IMO.

Marmite27 · 28/12/2022 16:20

There’s a lot more love for Roald Dahl in this country, they’re trying to maximise their income by keeping it in cinemas here longer.

It’s bloody annoying though, my DC keep asking to watch it again Confused

By the "original" do you mean the 90s movie that was nothing like the book?

Our the actual original. The glorious book by Roald Dahl?

Because no, its nothing like the 90s American film. Its far far better.

MaryKristmas · 28/12/2022 16:20

We were expecting it to be on Netflix on Christmas Day - I had definitely seen it advertised... 😤

Well said.

Startuplife · 28/12/2022 16:25

Yes I’d Googled when it was going to be available and must have read an American article without realising because I thought it was Christmas Day. Was very disappointed we couldn’t watch it as planned this morning

Mamette · 28/12/2022 16:27

It’s not rubbish at all. It’s absolutely brilliant and the songs are so clever.

ilkleymoorbartat · 28/12/2022 16:29

Actually laughing at whoever said it was rubbish.

AllOfThemWitches · 28/12/2022 16:32

It's absolutely full to the brim of ridiculously talented children (and adults, of course), fantastic choreography and great songs. It can hardly be compared to the original film as they are so different. Imagine dismissing it as 'rubbish,' tut.

blueflagflyhigh · 28/12/2022 16:32

I had heard it was in then I heard no it wasn't going to be on while still in cinema which wld make sense.

We went to see it yesterday, at first I wasn't sure as I love the original. The musical version is also brilliant but is very different and I wouldn't compare one against the other. The actors are all brilliant including the kids and I'm not so keen on musicals but I thought it was really well done. Def worth going to see.

Ps Emma Thompson is brilliant as Miss Trunchbull!

loveandwarmth · 28/12/2022 16:34

It was definitely mistakenly advertised for a while as being made available on Xmas day on Netflix but this must have been for other countries.
I can't wait to watch it. My two are too little for the cinema so I'll wait. I went to see the stage show and I loved it.

Lapland123 · 28/12/2022 16:35

Saw it in cinema, it’s absolutely wonderful!!! So much better than the previous film version. Worth going to cinema for, if you can’t hold out until Netflix next year

Marmite27 · 28/12/2022 16:35

R-E-V-O-L-T-I-N-G!

OliviaFlaversham · 28/12/2022 16:39

We recently saw it at the cinema and I am glad we saw it on the big screen. Given it is a musical and has such brilliant choreography, I don’t think it could have been as good watching on TV. It needs a stage size screen.

Chihuahuasrule · 28/12/2022 16:53

It's absolutely brilliant

Quirrelsotherface · 28/12/2022 16:53

Best film I've seen in ages. I suspect many share the same opinion and that is why they went back on their original plan to release it on Netflix in the UK on Christmas day. They'll make more at the cinema.

As to the person who said it's rubbish..you have zero appreciation for the arts. It's based on the very clever West End musical and it is glorious. Superbly cast and memorable tunes for days.

TheLeadbetterLife · 28/12/2022 16:55

It’s on Netflix for us, but we’re not in the U.K. Great film, Emma Thompson and Lashana Lynch are fantastic, and the songs are breathtakingly clever.

Simplelobsterhat · 28/12/2022 17:00

I'm with you OP. It was being advertised as if it was coming to Netflix on Christmas day so I've been looking forward to watching it this week. I get why as it's in the cinemas here, but sure the initial trailers said cinemas November, Netflix Xmas day. Gutted, particularly as dd saw it in cinema with someone else so too late to organise a family outing now. We loved it in the theatre.
