Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Kucingsparkles · 21/12/2022 06:14

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Listen to that back, Sinner, and rest up!

Tricyrtis2022 · 29/12/2022 14:13

Hey, Mrs Robin is back! It's her third season now and whilst she's still a bit skittish, she's remembered the old routine very well and is using her usual perches. They were just at the worm bowl together and I'm wondering if Mrs Robin is attempting to remind The Robin how commensal feeding works. There were a few occasions last year when worms he should have given to her he ate himself, much to her obvious disgruntlement. Today he was sitting with a worm in his beak and she didn't wait for him to offer, just snatched it out of his beak.

otraynor · 29/12/2022 14:23

Good move, Mrs. Robin!

Kucingsparkles · 29/12/2022 15:49

@SqueakyDinosaur Excellent thread!

Listen to that back, Sinner, and rest up!

Thanks, I'm trying to!

Anyway, I was trying to tax the car online, earlier. It kept crashing, but after an hour, it said that no MOT certificate could be found, but it didn't mean it didn't have one. I couldn't find it anywhere - it's my DW's car.

Anyway, on the way to my friend's, I detoured to the garage she takes it to. It expired on December 16th! She told me it was January, or February. I came back, terrified that I'd get pulled over.

She insisted, even in the face of the re-printed certificate. She then said "Why did I pay £1,800 in February?"

Firstly, she didn't, I did! I explained that that was for the tyres and other stuff replaced as part of a major service, not a £35 test of blimming roadworthiness. I now have to take it up there for 8:30 tomorrow morning. Not happy!

Staticgirl · 29/12/2022 17:00

I bought an Easter egg today because it was there.

angelico53 · 29/12/2022 17:14

Hope you feel better soon, sinner.

Had a CT today, so may get some useful information re stupidnesses in due course.

How does one reference a username here, btw? I see most posters must know!

SinnerBoy · 29/12/2022 17:15

Thanks, Angelico. I just bold the name, I tried an at symbol, but that made the user name appear thousands of times...

bignosebignose · 29/12/2022 17:29

Get well soon Sinner (and others). I was on holiday in France and realised my MOT had expired a couple of weeks before we got there. That was a slightly nervous three hour drive back to Calais and across to the nearest Kwik Fit…. I fully expected a fine to arrive at some point courtesy of being clocked by a camera somewhere on the earlier journey through England but it never did.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 29/12/2022 17:45

If you @ and then start typing you should get a drop down list of usernames.

Kucingsparkles · 29/12/2022 18:28

@SinnerBoy Oh dear about the MOT! I hope you're feeling better.

It's taken me a while to find you all again. I kept getting lost on other threads and realized that catching up isn't always viable. I did follow some of the links you posted to other threads on AIBU and came away feeling very smug about my own life. It never fails to amaze me how each year, people get so excited about Xmas, and then all fall out and are miserable. How do they keep forgetting? I had so many shite family Xmas's when young, I love the quiet of mine.

Scotland made me despair, and so does Starmer. Come 2 yrs time, it will have to be a spoilt ballot paper, if things don't change.
Hope those in pain feel better very soon.
p.s will change name soon.

Evening all. The oximeter arrived and all is well-ish. Oxygen is 93% which I thought was okay but apparently is a little below normal. Heart rate is slightly high too but not by too much. I'll keep an eye on it.

Thank you all for pushing me to get hold of one.

SqueakyDinosaur · 29/12/2022 19:31

@IReallyLikeCrows doctors worry when it's below about 96 IME. If you take a few deep, slow breaths it should inch upwards again.

SinnerBoy · 29/12/2022 19:40

@SinnerBoy Oh dear about the MOT! I hope you're feeling better.

I just hope it doesn't turn into £500 of repairs, on top....

MavisMcMinty · 29/12/2022 21:42

Oh, how sad, Vivienne Westwood has died. My ex-flatmate’s boyfriend had loads of her clothes but wore none of them, he “collected” designers and books.

Dotellhimpike · 29/12/2022 22:06

@IReallyLikeCrows Did your device come with instructions on how best to get as accurate a reading as possible? Things like no nail varnish, hand warm and held below the level of the heart etc? If not you can look here and see if the reading changes. 93% would be below what I wanted to see.

www.fda.gov/medical-devices/safety-communications/pulse-oximeter-accuracy-and-limitations-fda-safety-communication

Dotellhimpike · 29/12/2022 22:09

I should also lay my cards on the table here and say I am not a fan of people buying their own devices like pulse oximeters etc, as my own view is they are more likely to cause people distress on the whole. I think I had this discussion with @bignosebignose in that other place and we disagree on this.

Dotellhimpike · 29/12/2022 22:13

Three post ment!

I am a fan of people trusting their gut instinct. Your body's sense of interoception will tell you when something's not right, listen to your gut.

bignosebignose · 29/12/2022 22:28

Can’t recall that conversation old chap, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Obviously you’re much better qualified than me when it comes to this sort of thing though. I suppose I’d just say (in this Covid world, with a GP not always instantly available) a bought oximeter is better than nothing but not necessarily perfectly accurate. But probably accurate enough to detect the difference between a fairly safe 90-100 and a possibly dangerously disguised 40-60 hypoxia.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 29/12/2022 23:08

I'm a definite fan of home devices - I'm all about the data. But I agree for anyone with health anxiety or short on biological knowledge they can be counterproductive.

duc748 · 30/12/2022 00:39

On more trivial matters, if I may: I slightly pranked the home brew forum Secret Santa this year by including my parsnip stout. I couldn't reveal what it was, so just labelled it as 'unconventional stout'. So since Xmas Eve, I've been waiting for this guy to come out with his comments. He did tonight:

My first secret Santa beer is a 4.6% "Unconventional" stout.

Lovely carbonation & a head that lasted from first to last sip. Quite restrained on roast character for a stout. I was getting a Guinness vibe from this one as it had a good bitterness & a bit of that "tang" you get from Guinness. I'm intrigued by what is "unconventional" about this but thinking it's linked to the tang? Enjoyable beer overall.

IReallyLikeCrows · 30/12/2022 00:55

@Dotellhimpike yep, it came with a lot of instructions, which I was pleased about. I now know that the reading isn't ideal but given the ferociousness of my chesty cough and the asthma I think it's understandable, that is it's bound to be not great. I'm going to continue to keep an eye on it. I'm also aware that the accuracy might not be all it could be but my guess would be that it wouldn't be out by enough to mean I should be really worried, if that makes sense.

I managed a walk to the beach earlier. Well, I had to be close to it anyway in search of Benylin which was sold out but Superdrug had their own cherry flavoured brand. The sea was wild and rather beautiful. Definitely a bit breathless when I'm out but again, that's understandable. Everything is heading in the right direction at last.

IReallyLikeCrows · 30/12/2022 00:57

Really sad about Vivienne Westwood. I have one of her dresses that I managed to get really cheaply. Oh and a pair of jeans too. If I had money I'd have loads of her clothes. I bloody love her designs.

duc748 · 30/12/2022 01:06

Glad to hear you're on the mend, Crows.
