How many holidays abroad do you have a year?

For us a couple with 1 child it's only 1 a year.
We have to spread it out every month.
I wish we could afford 2 to break the year up a bit but we are happy to go away tbh.
What about everyone else ?

We last flew in 2019 and I don't know when we will again. I wouldn't want to fly shortfaul because I'm an environmentalist. But I would love to take the children to see my dad in New Zealand. So currently feeling conflicted about that.

Bit taken aback by the answers on here tbh.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/12/2022 21:41

2 this year (both long haul) but we couldn't go away in the summer as we normally would due to a house move. We will hopefully have more next year. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 school age DC.

TheSmallAssassin · 18/12/2022 21:42

Our kids are late teens and we've only taken them abroad once, we've been on holiday and for city breaks every year, but in the UK. We were going to have a week abroad in 2020, as it was our inbetween exams year, but we all know what happened to that! We went on honeymoon without them when they were small, so an average of about 1 in 6 years.

We travelled abroad more before they were born and maybe would have taken them more if Covid hadn't happened, but it's just loads more expensive and more to organise! Plus we like the UK as much as abroad 😁

NoelNoNoel · 18/12/2022 21:42

I live near an airport and saw the impact of us not being allowed to fly during Covid had on many families that had previously worked at the airport.

ChicagoBears · 18/12/2022 21:43

3 or 4 times a year. Family of 4. We’re eagerly trying to repay our mortgage back so will limit next year and are planning some UK breaks.

Ayeaken · 18/12/2022 21:43

Pre-kids, 5/6 times a year, mixture of long haul and European breaks. We now have a baby and a toddler and haven't been abroad since our eldest was born (2.5 years ago).

I LOVE holidays but the thought of travelling with 2 young kids doesn't appeal to me. We'll probably stick to UK breaks for another couple of years before attempting a family holiday abroad.

runforyourdog · 18/12/2022 21:54

This work holiday year we will have been to;
Lanzorote for a week
Cotswolds in the caravan for a week
France in caravan for 2 weeks
Barbados for a week
Skiing in France for a week.

So 4 abroad holidays, probably a bit more than we'd normally do.

stargirl1701 · 18/12/2022 21:58

@ladywithnomanors

Both are a looonnnnggg way from Northern Scotland. I believe the Rosyth Ferry service may be starting again but I'm not 100% certain.

Insaneinthemembraneee · 18/12/2022 22:03

@Spellegrin

Our world is dying for a multitude of reasons - personally we do our best to reduce emissions in other ways, but when super emitting counties aren't doing anything to regulate emissions from manufacturing / shipping / fossil fuels / deforestation etc I'm not going to feel bad about holidays! Doesn't airplane travel only account for something like than 5% of global emissions?

It brings us joy and we balance it in other ways.

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/12/2022 22:28

None . Unless you count trips to Scotland where we have family or Wales , which is just the other side of the River Severn (we live in England).
We last went abroad in 2012 and stayed with family living in Holland.

Kualma · 18/12/2022 23:42

I’ve been away 5 times this year abroad!

Abcdefgh1234 · 18/12/2022 23:53

we are family of 4

One long hail flight to indonesia (19 hours flight) because i’m from indonesia. So we go back every summer holiday

one short flight to anywhere near. Usually on easter break.

and couple local holiday during half term.

I think this shows there are lots of people with lots of spare cash at the moment despite the financial crisis. I do wonder how many participate in the it's too expensive threads.

BabyFour2023 · 19/12/2022 09:27

Early 30s with 3 children, soon to be 4.

Go abroad for holidays 3/4 times a year, usually 4, but we also do a few weekends away and city breaks so, overall, we probably go abroad 7/8 times a year.

Just so you gain some perspective I'm a single parent and I have 1 DC. We have been on 2 holidays this year these both were booked well in advance. I saved money in lockdown.

Not only that I just prioritise travelling as its memories and a great experience. We have been travelling since DC was 20 months together.

I have 1 holiday booked and paid for next year.

There's lots of simple reasons why people can afford holidays perhaps you have Sky, perhaps you drink alcohol or shop in Sainsburys. You cut your cloth accordingly!

OppositeNumber · 19/12/2022 19:51

The last holiday abroad was about 4 or 5 years ago. We avoid flying for environmental reasons (not an all out self imposed ban but certainly don’t feel entitled to do it frequently).

We also don’t much enjoy the faff of holidays and can find plenty to do in the UK.

Not all of us drink, shop expensive shops, have TV contracts ...a lot of us work 45 plus hours and can't afford luxury holidays because we're looking after your kids on minimum wage in total which for many is too much...and the head government should give you it cheaper so you can still go away.

Elsiebear90 · 19/12/2022 20:54

This year it’s been one as it was our wedding in Italy, so we spent 11 days there. We are going for two weeks to the Maldives in feb for our honeymoon so had no annual leave left because we went to stay in a lodge for a few days for my dad’s 60th as well. Normally it’s one beach holiday abroad, sometimes two and a city break.

This is horrendously patronising. The main reason people can afford holidays is earning decent money, not cutting out netflix. Give your head a wobble ffs.

NotMeekNotObedient · 19/12/2022 22:10

None this year. Not been since before the pandemic.

We have a toddler...I've been on mat leave and now paying extortionate nursery fees. Back part time and things are tight.

We have been lucky and had 2 breaks this year in the UK - a couple of nights at a family members' cottage and another a week in a self catering cottage in Northumberland.

To be honest in our social circle this seems usual - honestly don't know how our friends can afford these multiple holidays abroad plus UK breaks! Obviously earning more then us!

Hoping to go away to a eurocamp place in France next year for a week and we have a couple of nights booked in the UK to visit family.
