Anyone sad that Christmas will be over in a week?

I'm enjoying Advent and looking forwards to the start of Christmas and the 12 days of it. I build up gently through Advent and am just really getting into the feel of it.

It's a relief to get to the solstice and know that the days don't get shorter, but it's still a long drag until the days stretch out again, and the decor and lights of Christmas spilling into the new year ease those darkest days. The early Christians took advantage of the pagan solstice celebrations for good reason.

We got married on the 28th and this year is our ten year anniversary , sad in ways as this is the first Christmas since losing my dad in the autumn but the whole little family are coming with us to spend ‘twixmas’ in a cottage and can’t wait

I don't feel a sense of sadness because I think there's things to look forward to each month

January has my Dad's birthday and a hygeinist appointment
February has the half term break and a dentist appointment
March has mother's day and my Mum's birthday
Seeing my tulips grow from bulbs- should start to come out in March
Sowing marigolds in March
Making baskets out of the marigolds for my parents to hang in front of their home and to put up in the back garden
Sowing vegetable seeds- e.g. pumpkins

My roses should bloom again in summer

You look forward to seeing the hygienist and dentist? That's something you look forward to?

Over in a week?! It will have just begun !

This

Not us. We declare Christmas open when we finish looking after our granddaughter for the school holidays. So this week will be the start of opening all the yummy stuff we bought for Xmas, later evenings, lie ins, Xmas films on tv, visiting Father Xmas with our granddaughter and spending time with our teacher daughter.

Yes I start to feel low Christmas Day ! Hate the bit between Christmas and new year and loathe how depressing January is. By far the best part for me is the week before, the run up, the anticipation. Being cosy with the tree lights on and watching tv with some wine. Not as good after Christmas.

I wish Grin
I'll be back to work on the 28th and it will be manic as ever

Of course - I should have said 'if you're lucky enough to be off work'. I'm from a family of teachers and even the office workers among us get the period off, which I know is not the same for all by any means.

Pelo22 · 19/12/2022 09:27

@33goingon64 yeah I'm office based technically but work for a garage so the period between Christmas and NY is crazy with people ringing up

WaddleAway · 19/12/2022 10:00

DH and I are both office based (financial services) but unless we book off time around Christmas we are only off on the bank holidays. This year I’ve booked this week off but go back between Christmas and new year (because the kids have finished school so need to look after them!) and DH is working this week but off between Christmas and new year. We can’t afford the holiday allowance to both be off at the same time, due to childcare.

I’m thrilled it will be over. It’s utter trash - same music every year for the past few decades, pressure to buy people crap they don’t want or need, getting anything practical and necessary done (such as fixing/replacing a broken washing machine) is impossible.

Are you me?

How sad.

I've sung new music every year, for the last 15 years at least.
Although I do enjoy the traditional carols too.
I also like the Christmas pop songs on the radio.

We no longer buy for adult siblings , nieces and nephews and we have wish lists from the others so they only get things they want.

This such as fixing/replacing a broken washing machine is probably quite a niche problem in fairness.

Agreed I’ve loved advent this year next year I’ll have my own advent wreath and candles fake ones. But for me the joy will carry on into January.

No way, I'm counting the days until it's over.

lindyloo57 · 22/12/2022 18:39

I prefer new year, looking forward to spring and summer.
