Anyone sad that Christmas will be over in a week?

OP posts:

The build up to Christmas is the best bit, but I’ve got a week off work so once Christmas Day and Boxing Day are done I’ve got that to look forward!

I assume that the people who love Christmas have..

lots of money
A big happy family
loads of friends

Actually none of those things. Cash is tight, we’re not on the breadline but certainly can’t afford to buy big piles of presents or presents for extended family members etc. We have to keep it simple. DH’s family live abroad and we don’t see them at Christmas, my parents are acrimoniously divorced, my dad remarried, and my only sibling is dead, so we only see my mum at Christmas. I barely have any friends since having my third child who is disabled… I haven’t been able to go out in the evenings for 4 years so that limits your social circle a bit!
I still love Christmas though. I love carols, Christmas films, school Christmas shows, Christmas lights etc. Day to day life is a pretty hard slog for us so it feels like a bit of escapism for me.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 18/12/2022 19:20

For me, Christmas is the day before, day itself and day after. It's just a bit of present buying, a roast dinner and a few days off work. I suppose if I was religious I may feel it's bigger than that, but as I'm not it's just not a big deal.

Nope can't wait for Christmas and New Year to be over, I find it really difficult and can't even go into big supermarkets without bursting into tears over Christmas songs.

I lost my Nanna who bought me up a few years ago a week before Christmas and it hasn't been the same since. My Gramps died a few years before and they always made Christmas so special for us.

Im hoping next year will be happy as I'll have a 7 month old at Christmas and hoping that will bring the magic back for me ♥️

Comedycook · 18/12/2022 19:23

@WaddleAway pleased you find joy in it. Personally I just hold my breath till it's over and life can get back to normal

And time off work. Not a nurse who's not allowed to take annual leave so has to try and be festive and fun in between a normal, hard busy week....

Plumbear2 · 18/12/2022 19:38

Christmas hasn't started yet. For us it starts on Christmas Eve and ends 1st January. If you want Christmas films then stream them

sinkyt · 18/12/2022 20:19

all Xmas events and Xmas films are over by that point though.

not where I live

None of those ... it will be just me and DH having a pared-down celebration ... but I'll have three days off work between Christmas and NY Xmas Smile

I am disabled and can't work, DH is on £26k, we are far from loaded

We have no family at all - just me, DH and DD

Absolutely no friends between the three of us

...but Christmas is absolutely our favourite time of the year. From early November to January.

wiltingflower · 18/12/2022 20:52

I don't feel a sense of sadness because I think there's things to look forward to each month

January has my Dad's birthday and a hygeinist appointment
February has the half term break and a dentist appointment
March has mother's day and my Mum's birthday
Seeing my tulips grow from bulbs- should start to come out in March
Sowing marigolds in March
Making baskets out of the marigolds for my parents to hang in front of their home and to put up in the back garden
Sowing vegetable seeds- e.g. pumpkins

My roses should bloom again in summer

Christmas isn’t over until 12th Night! Of course all the ignorant herberts who have had their trees up since Halloween will be itching to take everything down and get their ‘Easter decorations‘ up. Christmas starts on Christmas Eve. If you’ve been dicking about with Elf on the Shelf and bloody fabulous festive events since early November then of course you’ll be sick of it all.

I've been dicking about with festive stuff since early November and will be until Twelfth Night!

RancidOldHag · 18/12/2022 20:55

It won't be over - it will just have begun.

I really don't understand why people want to exit a 12-day festival after day 1!

OK - real life and the return to work gets in the way a bit, but you can still make it magical

Passthecake30 · 18/12/2022 20:55

I love the bit after Xmas, 26th-2nd Jan. no stress, no work, lots of lie ins and family time. Not of a fan of the run up to Xmas at all!

EmmaAgain22 · 18/12/2022 20:59

Doughnuts68 · 18/12/2022 16:40

Charityshop- that’s what it seems like every year that Xmas is over at the end of the 25th

How?

I wish it seemed over by then but it never does.

33goingon64 · 18/12/2022 21:05

The Christmas period begins on 24th and ends 6 Jan. And even if you dismiss the historic significance, why would you not want a festival to coincide with being off work and school? Why be glum from 27th onwards when that's the peak time for eating, drinking, being merry, seeing family, having a rest? If people weren't so impatient to start feeling festive the moment Halloween was over and could control themselves, they'd realise that's what the holiday is for. No wonder people are 'sick of the decorations' by Boxing Day and bored in the run up to new year. Treat it all as a massive festival/party starting on 24th (or at a push a few days before).

tillytoodles1 · 18/12/2022 21:14

I'll be glad when it's all over. Im a widow with two kids in their 40's and a teenage grandchild. Apart from a nice dinner at my daughter's house on the day and breakfast at son's on boxing day, it's no big deal.

Luellie · 18/12/2022 21:18

WiddIytinks · 18/12/2022 17:41

Christmas isn't over until Twelfth Night (at least). For us it starts on the Saturday after Bonfire Night, when we have a sort of mini Christmas dinner to launch the season, and it ends on the first Saturday after TN when we have another special meal/little party type thing to close it.

Lots of stuff is still happening until TN - pantos don't usually finish until then and winter wonderland type events usually go on until New Year at least. And you don't have to rely on events anyway - you can have festive film evenings, walks to look at lights, Christmassy meals, etc. Don't take the decorations down until TN and buy some new ones for next year in the sales.

I know it sounds like a cliché but it's not called the festive season for nothing - Christmas isn't just one day!

You are my kind of person!!

Not me. I can’t bear it. I tend not to share my views as I’m in the minority.

A two month "Christmas". One sixth of the year.

My idea of absolute hell. Agree January is a great time of year, new beginnings, Spring round the corner, increasing daylight, and at least 10 months until normal people start wittering on about fecking Christmas.

lightand · 18/12/2022 21:25

Our family makes it last 1 week. And even after that some of us then take it easy for a couple more weeks. Bliss.

And my idea of heaven! We're all different. And it's not as if we have the decorations up the whole two months - first Sunday in advent for us. It's more that we start our shopping and planning in early November. Christmas begins (for us) in earnest when the decorations go up and ends on Twelfth Night.

I actually love January too. February can do one however. Only good thing about February is that it's over quickly!

  1. It won't be
  2. What a sad outlook you have on life
  3. Even sadder you have started a 2nd thread because people didn't agree with you on your first thread.

that's not the bit after Christmas. That is Christmas.

we have family days out, see extended family, attend a couple of parties, have family meals and fancy breakfast, have a mini break is we can afford it like alton towers who do a christmas break, play boardgames. We end with a small stocking on the 6th of jan to mark the end of the season for us.
