So, macaroni pasta with thick cheesy bechamel sauce. Is it...

Macaroni cheese?
Cheesy pasta?
Mac n cheese?
Something else?

What do you call it, and where are you from?

@BertaHoon I'm just nosey. Language and dialects fascinate me.

Ah @Orangio , me too! I don't mind Mac n cheese, however if there is no Mac involved it's neither.

ChocoFudge · 13/12/2022 14:09

Mac n cheese here - even when I've run out of macaroni and used another pasta shape!

Carbonara doesn't have bechamel anywhere near it though! Carbonara doesn't have a 'sauce' as such - it is egg based.

Surely macaroni with cheese sauce and bacon bits is still macaroni cheese (with added bacon).

Yup - all the best macaroni cheese has bacon bits in it.

Macaroni cheese if it's baked oven and has a crusty cheesy top (sometimes with a handful of breadcrumbs). Otherwise, cheesy pasta. Never Mac and cheese though. Am from Belfast.

SenecaFallsRedux · 13/12/2022 14:10

Macaroni and cheese or mac and cheese. Georgia.

But traditional Southern mac and cheese is not made with bechamel; it's a savory custard concoction mixed with the pasta and baked with a crispy breadcrumb and butter topping.

BertaHoon · 13/12/2022 14:11

Oh I'm Midlands by the way.

I don't like Mac n Cheese pie as it's always too dry. Overbaked IMO.

Giggorata · 13/12/2022 14:13

Macaroni cheese, regardless of pasta. Occasionally, maccie cheese.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 13/12/2022 14:17

Macaroni cheese, even when made with other shapes.....

thelobsterquadrille · 13/12/2022 14:19

Pasta with cheese/cheesy pasta if it's just a cheesy sauce.
Macaroni cheese if it's macaroni and baked in the oven.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 13/12/2022 14:21

all the best macaroni cheese has bacon bits in it.
chorizo is better.

tiggergoesbounce · 13/12/2022 14:21

Macaroni cheese or cheesy pasta.

Pascor · 13/12/2022 14:23

Notaflippinclue · 13/12/2022 13:27

Chuck some chopped baco in and call it carabanara

Don't, because that would be nothing at all like a carbonara.

HardStareBear · 13/12/2022 14:23

Macaroni AND cheese is my default. Never macaroni cheese, that just sounds wrong. Occasionally mac 'n' cheese or cheesy pasta. I'm from NE Scotland.

TerraNostra · 13/12/2022 14:29

Yes, Mac n' (or and) Cheese is what young people and trendy restaurants call it nowadays. I think the name was originally invented by Kraft on their instant packet one sold in the US. The US term has just become more popular because of You Tube and the like.

It was always Macaroni Cheese to me, but language changes I guess. Incidentally OP I like that macaroni is a sort of adopted Scottish pasta that comes in tartan packets.

And of course only a Scot would go that one step further and put it in a pie...

I think it should be Macaroni and Cheese, but I've always called it Macaroni Cheese, or cheesy pasta bake if not made with macaroni. I'm from London but now live in S England. Have you tried Nadiya Hussain's version with Wotsits crumbled into the mix...? www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/mac_and_cheesy_81730 😋

Awoooga · 13/12/2022 14:35

Same as some others, macaroni cheese if using macaroni, cheesy pasta if using any other type of pasta.

BlancmanegeBunny · 13/12/2022 14:38

Comefromaway · 13/12/2022 13:24

Macaroni cheese if it is macaroni pasta
Cheesy pasta if it is any other type of pasta

Same here.

SallyWD · 13/12/2022 14:44

Macaroni cheese. Mac and cheese is American but I see everyone's saying it now.

Phos · 13/12/2022 14:47

Macaroni cheese if it's made with Macaroni. Cheesy pasta otherwise.

TheKitchenWitch · 13/12/2022 14:52

Macaroni cheese, regardless of pasta used and whether it goes in the oven or not.
I have a weird dislike of it being called mac n cheese for some reason.

longtompot · 13/12/2022 14:56

Macaroni cheese if the pasta is macaroni but pasta cheese if other pasta

mathanxiety · 13/12/2022 14:58

Mac 'n cheese. US midwest.

Sartre · 13/12/2022 15:10
