Pasta with cheese sauce, unless the pasta is macaroni.

Interesting! Pretty unanimous. I thought there'd be more mac n cheese voters as I seem to be seeing that increasingly on menus etc.
Macaroni cheese here too, if it's baked, and cheesy pasta if not. Cheesy pasta also comes in a tin, and is definitely not macaroni cheese! I'm from Scotland.
So is mac n cheese international, and it's creeping in? As the poster who mentioned her son said?

I only call it macaroni cheese if the pasta is macaroni and it has been poured into a dish and baked until the top is golden brown.

Otherwise it's just pasta with cheese sauce.

Obviously we all know it's not actually macaroni, so not technically correct, but it's just what we use as a cover all for any kind of pasta in cheese sauce, regardless if its baked on made in a pan, and whether it's got bacon or leeks or chopped up frankfurters or whatever in it.

I guess I should probably call it "pasta cheese" instead...

I'd never heard of mac and cheese till about 5 years ago, it seems to be almost ubiquitous now, but I prefer macaroni cheese.

Macoroni cheese if baked in the oven with a crispy top and probably something like mustard in the sauce too. Cheesy peasy pasta (thanks Bing 🤣) is what we tend to have if it's pasta (and peas and bacon) cooked with a bechemel sauce stirred through.

Yes, this. It’s not really macaroni cheese for me if you just mix the sauce in. Needs to have a crispy ish top.
OTOH I don’t mind if it’s made with eg fusilli. Still macaroni cheese if it’s not made with actual macaroni. I’m aware that’s somewhat perverse.

Carbonara doesn't have bechamel anywhere near it though! Carbonara doesn't have a 'sauce' as such - it is egg based.

Surely macaroni with cheese sauce and bacon bits is still macaroni cheese (with added bacon).

If it’s just pasta mixed in with cheesy bechemal sauce I’d call it cheesy pasta.
