Is anyone awake? I’m expecting bad news and I can’t sleep

My dh is unwell and we have no idea what is wrong. We are getting scan results this morning but they were only to rule things out so probably not conclusive. However, I can’t see how this isn’t going to be something serious as he has declined so rapidly.

I feel sick. We’ve already lost most of his income through him being off work so I’m also worried sick about money. We have enough savings to manage another 2 months at the most.

My dc are already suffering, despite them
mot fully understanding how serious the symptoms are, as dh is pretty much housebound and I can’t physically drive them to all the clubs and places they need to go by myself.
I also work full time although thankfully I’m a teacher and break up this week.

My heart is broken just looking at him disappearing in front of me. The doctors are slow to take his symptoms seriously so sadly by the time he was sent to hospital he was already unable to work and very ill. It could of course be something very treatable but at the moment I feel suffocated with the fear of the worst case scenarios.
I am writing this as I’m lonely and scared and wondered if anyone is awake to say hello.

I have name changed in case anyone recognises me from this post. If you do, please don’t mention this as I am doing a great job of appearing strong on the outside.

I am about to lead a school assembly and put on my bravest face as I’m talking about trust and promises which is hard when I’m feeling so terrified and also let down by the hospital.

A sensitive question……

I know this sounds weird (and I hope it’s not offensive) but he has changed smell. I think he smells ill.
Does anyone know what I mean? I know the animals have been staying very close to them as apparently they can sense/ smell illness but I can notice a change in smell.
I’ve not said anything to him as I don’t want to be offensive but do I mention it when we next see a doctor?

Yes I would. Some people have a heightened sense of smell and can scent chemical changes in people's bodies (search woman who can smell Parkinson's - she worked with scientists to develop a test).

Hoping you get some information today, just got everything crossed for you Flowers

Flowers for today and getting some answers

Thinking of you today

Regarding change of smell my first thought was diabetes, as that's one of the symptoms, but apparently there are lots of causes depending on the type of smell www.healthline.com/health/sudden-change-in-body-odor#causes

DMCWelshcakes · 24/01/2023 09:26

Hi OP. I've been lurking on this thread for a while but didn't contribute as wiser people than me were giving advice. But I do know what you mean when you say he smells ill. I can smell ill people too. I would mention it to the medical team.

Best wishes for today.

Mirabai · 24/01/2023 09:47

Diabetes would have been ruled out early on with a blood test - it’s very easy to test for.

Misspacorabanne · 24/01/2023 09:58

I'm just letting you know that you are in my thoughts today! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and dh.

Hi, I'm so sorry this is happening to you and your family. Can you describe the smell?
The body does smell differently when certain things are happening or different illness so sometimes this can pinpoint something.
Really hoping that you and your DH get some answers sooner rather than later x

Princesspollyyy · 24/01/2023 10:57

Good luck for today x

It smells like someone who hasn’t brushed their teeth and I think it is his breath that smells. He is definitely still brushing his teeth properly and in fact I’ve noticed that he is making an effort to still shower properly despite being so unwell

Re his smell. It it like nail varnish or pear drops?

MyCake · 24/01/2023 11:37

It’s more sour than sweet. I noticed it a few days ago and did wonder whether he just needed to brush his teeth but I also smelled it again yesterday just after he’d showered and brushed his teeth and again today so I’m pretty sure it’s not hygiene related. I feel awful saying this and don’t want to tell him.

MyCake · 24/01/2023 11:39

I can’t be 100% sure it’s the breath that smells but it’s definitely new and he has never had that smells before. Even his ‘morning breath’ isn’t like this.

We are both very worried today although all we are expecting is the manager to ring again as that’s what she said she’d do.

It will be good to have a name for what your dh has. We all thinking of you. Hugs.

Princesspollyyy · 24/01/2023 12:09

Breath that smells sour
With gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the muscle between your esophagus and stomach doesn't close properly. As a result, the contents of your stomach can back up into your esophagus, throat, or mouth. If you have GERD, your breath may sometimes smell sour, like partially digested food.10 Jun 2020

Has there been any mention of Vasculitis, OP? I'm not medically qualified at all, but I knew someone diagnosed with this after a long period of health declining and it all seeming to be a mystery. Here's a link, there are lots of different types: www.uofmhealth.org/conditions-treatments/rheumatology/types-vasculitis

IVbumble · 24/01/2023 12:44

It's very common for a change in breath scent when people are not eating much even if they are cleaning their teeth.

BadNomad · 24/01/2023 12:53

^ Yes. If he's not eating much and losing weight, he could be in ketosis. That will cause a sweetly sour smelling breath.

I agree with this. Breath smells when people aren’t eating enough.

Flowersonthewall123 · 24/01/2023 13:00

This is a well known thing normally with mums and children. Mothers can smell on their children’s breath when they are getting sick (even a cold / flu). It’s been proven that humans can detect illness on people breath.

I would get some urine dip sticks and test for ketones and proteins, any ketones above 3plus is a hospital visit for fluids

MyCake · 24/01/2023 13:02

@BadNomad is ketosis dangerous?
