Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

@Thekormachameleon Thoughts with you and anyone else involved. Peace and love.

Anyone judging out loud the action of the kids on here needs to think again about how their written words will impact those who know these children. How dreadful to not only have this tragedy, but to know that within hours people are calling these kids names. It's clear that for whatever reason they didn't know or didn't understand the risks. Its an awful, awful tragic accident. Don't make their pain worse.

Yes I agree.

FleasNavidad · 11/12/2022 22:10

@Mariposista and others...wtf is wrong with you?

Those poor families. Children were obviously unaware and just trying to have some fun. Bless them. Poor kids

dandelionthistle · 11/12/2022 22:11

What a horrendous mistake to make.

Some very callous comments on this thread.

Thekormachameleon · 11/12/2022 22:11

Thank you @panko
I am crying into my wine tonight and will be unable to sleep whilst hoping tomorrow is a better day than brings less heartache for people

We have no idea what happened. I'm sure at the time they didn't think of the danger. My all means campaign for a safety campaign. But please don't call these kids names like that.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 11/12/2022 22:12

Some truly nasty comments on this thread, deeply disrespectful to talk like that about something so tragic which will be horrendous for all involved. Keep your thoughts to yourselves, fgs.

saturnsring · 11/12/2022 22:12

So sad and so easily done. Kids just don't see danger. God knows I did some reckless things during my childhood and teens, I was just lucky that nothing ever went wrong. What a terrible price to pay. The poor families.

Winterscomingagain · 11/12/2022 22:13

Terrifying and so desperately sad. It's also absolutely amazing that the emergency services were able to recover anyone alive from that scenario.

YoSofi · 11/12/2022 22:13

@Thekormachameleon thinking of you and all of your colleagues x

I remember seeing videos in school of ice safety amongst other things, my children have never had this. I have reminded them this evening of the dangers of open water and ice. There is absolutely no need for any judgement of the children involved or the parents. We all did stupid things as children, it’s an absolute tragedy and I’ll be praying for them all.

I'm sure we used to have public information films on TV about things like this, road safety etc.

We had something called ‘SPLAAT’ ‘safe play at all times’ they showed us videos on the big tv in class of various scenarios where it was dangerous to play . It terrified me

Redglitter · 11/12/2022 22:15

Horrible situation. Hope the 4 in hospital are OK. Their poor families

Thoughts too for the Firefighters who will be continuing their search & recovery possibly long into the night in awful conditions

tillytoodles1 · 11/12/2022 22:15

It's heartbreaking.

This is so so sad, those poor families.
We are at Centre Parcs for the weekend, and the lake here is frozen over. Yesterday there was an entire family with two kids playing on the lake while mum filmed with her phone and gave them instructions to smile, go further back etc.

I saw it from a distance with my heart in my mouth, and when a staff member came hurtling down the path towards them, to tell them how incredibly dangerous it was, and to please please never do it again, the adults appeared to be genuinely stunned at her being such a killjoy.

Hard as it is to believe it seems that some adults just don't think things through enough to see the risks, so it's no wonder children don't.

They should have been asked to leave Center Parcs for that. No words! Not only have they massively endangered their own kids lives, but the poor staff down by the lake/other holiday makers would have risked their own lives to save them. You actually cant believe some adults are parents!

MissDollyMix · 11/12/2022 22:17

Absolutely tragic. My heart goes out to the families involved.
I allow my kids to walk on frozen puddles. It’s quite eye opening how even a seemingly well frozen puddle can crack under the weight of a child.

user1634987 · 11/12/2022 22:17

How do they not know if there are 2 missing, surely if they are as young as it seems they are the parents would have reported them missing, on the BBC news it seemed they weren't sure about the numbers.

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2022 22:18

This is truly tragic. My heart goes out to all involved, including the emergency services.

My DH is a secondary school teacher. He has said he will be talking to his form about it tomorrow.

massivecringe · 11/12/2022 20:56

My ds has just asked why they go ice skating on it in lakes in Canada etc, I said I'm not sure they do other than in movies ??
But if they do it's because the ice is always frozen and ridiculously thick

If the ice is a certain thickness, it is considered safe. I believe it needs to be 2.5cm (1") thick for this to be the case.
I have only once skated on a fjord in Denmark, and lived there for many years. It is not common there, but it may well be in other countries.

PurpleButterflyWings · 11/12/2022 22:22

Sad. Sad

IlonaRN · 11/12/2022 22:22

To get to 1" thick ice, the temperature needs to be significantly sub-zero for a lot longer than just a few days!

OMG12 · 11/12/2022 22:22

This is not far from us it’s been so so cold and ponds frozen. Spent tonight drilling into DS water is never frozen enough to stand on in this country.

its just horrific. Can’t get my head round it.

HelpMeCope85 · 11/12/2022 22:23

I told my y6 DD about it. She was really upset and said why did you have to tell me this, I said unless we tell children they just don’t know. So very sad it’s taken this to happen. Prayers to the families. Just so devastating.

Cuppasoupmonster · 11/12/2022 22:23

Theimpossiblegirl · 11/12/2022 21:56

This really isn't the time and the place for speculation or name calling. I'm hoping the thread gets pulled.

I’m always a bit suspicious of the ‘ooooh X or Y tragic incident that is nothing to do with me has happened, hope everyone’s okay’

Obviously they’re not ok, they’ve fallen into a frozen lake. It’s just an excuse to gossip.

doorheckk · 11/12/2022 22:24

Exactly.

What is the motivation to name call & say callous things, does it make others feel better?
