Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

Kids do stupid things, no matter how often they've been taught. They're kids; not mini adults. Their brains work differently.
Ds always wears a helmet on his bike- except when he didn't, and flew off his mate's bike.
How many kids, although frequently told, cross roads staring at a phone?
His many kids wear all black, even though they can't be seen in the dark?
How many of us walked home from the pub alone? Got lifts with strangers? Allowed strangers to buy us drinks? Dabbled with drugs, in spite of grange Hill?

We all knew, on an intellectual level, what we should do- but always thought we'd be ok. Kids don't always think, they just act.

My pre teen is a bit free range. Every time she goes off with her mates to their favourite place, I wonder how I'd be judged if something happened.

Talking about the incident is fine but speculating & blaming the kids involved & parents is unnecessary.

Stop and think before you write things about the kids and parents.

Children, as well as adults, sometimes do things without thinking and in a split second there can be tragic consequences.

My friend was extremely intelligent, certainly not stupid. She looked out of a train window without thinking, hit her head and died. The things written about her online were absolutely horrific.

You AND the other few naysayers on here. Just leave the thread if you don't like it. It's REALLY not that difficult!

Are you ok?

ThisGirlNever · 11/12/2022 22:50

Earlier today the BBC website had a news article with various photos from around the UK. One imaged showed some people ice skating on what appeared to be a lake in Cambridgeshire. I immediately thought about how irresponsible the photo was.

justgettingthroughtheday · 11/12/2022 22:51

It's also not always easy to judge how thick the ice is. The lake here is frozen and there have been lots of kids having fun bouncing stones across the surface today. Where they were is well fenced. But I could easily see how tempting and exciting the ice would be. It's not something kids here see often - a bit like the magic of snow for kids.
I hope the children in hospital recover. Prayers for the families involved

doorheckk · 11/12/2022 22:52

@PurpleButterflyWings no I won't leave the thread because you said. It's ok to criticise posters saying horrible things about people involved in a tragic accident. If you don't like that you can leave...

My ds has just asked why they go ice skating on it in lakes in Canada etc, I said I'm not sure they do other than in movies ??
But if they do it's because the ice is always frozen and ridiculously thick

I used to live in Canada and it was something you saw regularly. But like you say, the ice is so thick that you could drive a car on it. We are talking 2-3 feet thick.

Yeah surely if you live close to a body of water, you don't let your kids out unsupervised until you are fully confident that they are aware of the risks, what to not do, and know what to do in an emergency.

And are mature enough to not do silly things.

So 18,25??

You can never be confident that a child won't have a silly five minutes, or that they'd be egged on, or go to another friends rescue.

adults do it, my bloody adult son did it today, thankfully he did risk assess in as far as he knew if he went in it would only be up to his knees but the bloody idiot was still surprised when he got wet.

Bloody awful that so many are judging

Completely ignoring the GFs who are baiting now..... Yes I agree, the ice is very thick in Canada. Indeed, my uncle who lives there has a shed on the ice that he does his ice fishing from in the deep winter months. VERY thick ice there.

Such a tragic story this is. Sad

PurpleButterflyWings · 11/12/2022 22:57

i agree with @ducksurprise judging these kids AND the parents in this tragic incident is absolutely fucking vile. Did these posters never do crazy stuff as a kid? Did/do you never let YOUR kids do crazy things? Some awful judgy comments on here.

Benjieandjacksmum · 11/12/2022 22:57

I was walking my dogs this morning in my local park which has a very large pond with swans ducks and herons etc. In the distance I could hear excited young voices all boys and to my horror they were heading towards the pond very excited and happy obviously planning to skate on the ice.Thankfully two dog walkers appeared and stopped them. I'd say these children were no more than nine or ten and what stayed with me was the absolute joy they were feeling which was obviously pushing any sense of danger completely away. So nothing to do with being "thick" and everything to do with being a child who is full of joy and living in the moment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/12/2022 22:58

I actually feel sick. Dear God Please let these poor children be okay.

Afterfire · 11/12/2022 22:59

I do wonder if we’ve all become so focused on stranger danger and paedophiles that we often lose sight of the regular dangers out and about for children. I live in a very rural area and people let their kids play out a lot, from a very young age and quite recently there was an incident where some of the children hurt themselves in an abandoned building site. Kids are adventurous and will explore things, sometimes even warning them is not enough though.

doorheckk · 11/12/2022 22:59

@PurpleButterflyWings so you now agree?! 😆

FleasNavidad · 11/12/2022 23:01

@PurpleButterflyWings you just went absolutely nuts at pps for pointing out that several posters were being vile on this thread. Yelling for people to leave the thread.

I'm glad you agree now because we're right. It is a horrible thing to do. Nobody was "baiting" you at all. Ridiculous overreaction.

Shootingstarsparkle · 11/12/2022 23:02

This is the area I live. So completely heartbreaking, please be kind - whatever happened tonight there is no room for blame or name calling, this is such a tragedy

FleasNavidad · 11/12/2022 23:02

@doorheckk I think there must be wine involved but at last, we can all agree.

Thewayshetalks · 11/12/2022 23:02

I live right by this lake and saw all the ambulances/fire/ police going past and thought something terrible must have happened, the lake was thin ice, not completely frozen over, it is devastating.
I cannot imagine what the parents are going through right now.
I heard from a friend also local that one child has died, I really hope that isn’t the case.

TheFairyCaravan · 11/12/2022 23:02

It’s a very tragic accident. I feel so terribly sorry for all involved. Their parents must be in bits. 😢
