Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

The children were aged 8-10 apparently according to local media.

My photo didn’t load but if you look on google maps you can see how close the lake is to housing estates.

Blondlashes · 11/12/2022 21:49

@massivecringe Im in Switzerland. Lakes do freeze over - not every winter. Here there are officials who check the depth of the ice and declare its safe to skate on or not. There are also websites with the lake ice rinks - say they are open or not.
Sadly as Uk winters get colder, as they seem to be in the last few years, I think there will be more cases like this. Parents and schools needs to educate kids about the dangers

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/12/2022 21:50

But i cant for the life of me understand why any kids are that dumb to go on ice in the uk. It's just not the right climate for it even with the poor weather.

@RedToothBrush hopefully your cruel words come from shock rather than simply calling the children dumb?

iceyniceyspicey · 11/12/2022 21:50

Poor lads I hope they pull through

the kids were probably already filming their mate on a laie when they fell through, maybe they were filming 'live' or Snapchat or something so it's already out there

PoseyFlump · 11/12/2022 21:50

I think it said on sky news app that one of the missing could be a dog walker (who presumably went to help) 😔

Kids age 8 out in weather as icy as this by themselves?

Ffs that's asking for problems without there being a ruddy great lake nearby!

oh that’s awful!

ImNotBella · 11/12/2022 21:53

This is so terribly sad.

AriettyHomily · 11/12/2022 21:54

Water safety is a life skill, and why the duck were they out at hat age without supervision near a fucking great big lake.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/12/2022 21:54

I'm sure we used to have public information films on TV about things like this, road safety etc.

AnguaResurgam · 11/12/2022 21:55

Reports are talking of children, not teenagers, but its quite possible they were secondary school age.

It's very different here, in a country that gets cold snaps, rather than in places where it really freezes for months at a time and thick snow cover is the norm. The infrastructure is totally different, and so are the safety messages drummed into the population from a young age.

I really hope those in hospital pull though.

And I can see why people might keep filming (filming might have started before the ice gave way) because it might help provide evidence of how many people went through (eye witness accounts can be alarmingly wrong) and possibly give useful information about the circumstances that might aid the rescuers. But it's despicable to share online - it should be shown to emergency services only

Theimpossiblegirl · 11/12/2022 21:56

This really isn't the time and the place for speculation or name calling. I'm hoping the thread gets pulled.

Workinghardeveryday · 11/12/2022 21:58

So so sad

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/12/2022 21:59

I remember being told by the fire service at school not to play on ice or swim in lakes, reservoirs or rivers around the same age as these children. They pulled no punches and it was hammered home to us. We were also told not to walk on ice to try to rescue anyone who has fallen through. These kids were possibly playing in the snow and it went from there. I hope they all pull through.

Theredjellybean · 11/12/2022 22:00

I'm all for children being allowed out to play etc...and think generally we are far to risk adverse as a society.
However if I lived close to a lake and had tweens or teens I'd have been very cautious about them being out unsupervised.
Kids cannot judge risks the same as adults, teen brains don't either ..kids are just curious and teens it's all about the insta pics ...their brains are immature and they will take risks... generally that's how they learn to assess things.
Sadly in this case it wasn't a great place or situation to be testing out those teen brains.
Those poor families who for all they knew thought their child had gone round to a friends house to play/hangout.

KurriKawari · 11/12/2022 22:01

Really takes a certain kind of person to swear about a tragedy happening to kids.

leithreas · 11/12/2022 22:02

This is incredibly sad. I live beside a lake and walk the dogs there every day. Ice just draws kids in. I've seen kids everyday since it froze stamping on the ice etc Children just get overexcited and don't think sometimes, even if they have been warned a hundred times not to. I'm sure the parents would never imagine that something so terrible could happen. My thoughts are with them all.

L1ttledrummergirl · 11/12/2022 22:07

When I was a child we lived in Germany so people could skate on the ice when it froze. My friend and I strayed away from the others and found ourselves on a thinner section which gave way beneath me. Fortunately for me it was shallow, I was soaked from head to foot but I was able to get straight out.

It was bloody awful, so cold I felt as though I had been stabbed all over with needles. I was very very lucky not to be hospitalised but it took hours to warm up (mum made sure it was done slowly).

My heart goes out to all those involved. So dreadful.

PicturesOfDogs · 11/12/2022 22:07

This is so sad, I imagine they know not to go to the lake when it’s normal, but probably have seen movies about kids playing on frozen lakes etc and not realised the danger.

Heartbreaking 😔

People are human. They make mistakes. Calling them names is nasty. It is a tragedy. So very very sad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/12/2022 22:08

Anyone judging out loud the action of the kids on here needs to think again about how their written words will impact those who know these children. How dreadful to not only have this tragedy, but to know that within hours people are calling these kids names. It's clear that for whatever reason they didn't know or didn't understand the risks. Its an awful, awful tragic accident. Don't make their pain worse.
