Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

Devastating news. No words really. I have come back to this thread as it’s all I’ve thought about and now it’s ended like this and I want to talk about it and unable to talk to anyone. I’m so sorry for the indescribable pain those families will be going through now. Poor boys and families.

Me too, I just can’t stop thinking about what happened and keep getting upset over it all. I live local so this probably contributes to my upset. I have nobody else to talk to about it really (or those that I do talk to are very opinionated and I don’t think it is necessary to judge)
Devastating news that has rocked the community, I just can’t stop getting upset but somehow reading this thread has helped.

Awful awful outcome.

Some of our search and rescue volunteers are called to assist incidences like this, I did the water rescue course which included trying to swim in freezing water one February, and no matter how well prepared you are, cold water shock WILL affect you, and even a strong swimmer will struggle to rescue themselves. We all need to remind our children / nieces / nephews / class of the dangers, over and over again.

one thing I do is Break the ice; if you pass a pond / water course and can do so safely, break the ice with a large stone or stick, make it clear it’s not a safe surface, might help save one person and stop them venturing out onto it. But ONLY if you can do so safely and from a distance.

Thank you emergency services workers, please seek help if you struggle to process what you’ve seen and dealt with, and every sympathy to the families involved and their loved ones and friends.

Well this has to be the best post on this thread. If you see ice, smash it with rocks.

I'm also feeling very affected by this news story. I was relieved today that the six year old is still reported as alive and in hospital, it gives me hope for him and his family. I talked to my own six year old son about the dangers of walking on ice before school this morning, and he said "but mummy that's what happens in the gruffalo's child." It is so so sad.

It also creates drinking water for animals

I didn’t even think of that, it’s my daughters favourite film at this time of year.

It’s so, so difficult. I drilled into my son yesterday that he must never go into water or onto ice to help someone in trouble but while I was saying it I knew that if I came across someone in trouble, especially a child of course I’d go in to try and help even though I KNOW it’s the wrong thing to do. I know my son would do the same, it’s who he is 😞

One of the lads has been named as Jack Jones - he was one of the boys aged 10 who died trying to save his friends. Its just been announced on the news.
Jacks Aunt said "my nephew saw one go through the ice and he ran and tried to save them. We are just broken over it and to find out he died trying to save three lads he didn't know, that just sums him up, he was amazing"
A friend of one of the boys who died after falling through an icy lake in Solihull has revealed that one of the children got his legs stuck in the ice before his friends rushed over to help him, but they all fell in. So very tragic.

@Emotionalsupportviper

I doubt that that group would want their children told off by a policeman

my understanding, is they that you don’t actually get a choice as to whether you get told off by a policeman or not, it is the policing by consent agreement. I do think that’s different from some interfering biddie at a DIY Centre .

Given its the emergency services that literally deal with the consequences i doubt anyone would support complaints.

The woman wasn't "some interfering biddie" - she was a staff member who was swiftly removing a small child from a very dangerous situation.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/12/2022 12:32

interfering biddie at a DIY Centre you think she was ani nterferring old lady for pulling a kid out from under a shelf. What would she have been if she'd ignored the kid and the shelves had collapsed. Was the member of public who went onto the ice to try to save these kids interfering too?

DarkKarmaIlama · 13/12/2022 13:10

@Shootingstarsparkle

Im also local and it makes it feel gut wrenching doesn’t it.

3luckystars · 13/12/2022 13:46

That is just heartbreaking. God help them all.

His name is Jack Johnson, not Jones

Apologies, unforgivable typo. Brave lad in any case.

I think kids in cities don't have the same awareness of danger.

I think that's true in a lot of situations. We live 100 yards from the beach, I didn't grow up right on the coast, but we were often there, as kids. I was 15, when two girls went on the prom and were knocked over by huge waves, with one being sucked through the fence and drowning.

When we moved here, we were out with DD in the pram and the waves were crashing over and my wife, seeing lots of people, suggested that we should go down and take photos. I said no and explained why and more or less immediately, a group were knocked over.

Even people who really, really should know better end up in the water. A few years ago, two idiotic fishermen climbed over the locked gate and went onto the pier, in Tynemouth. One was rescued, the other was never found.

I remember this about the poor girl I live in the same area. I didn't know about the fishermen though.

Emotionalsupportviper · 13/12/2022 15:49

The fishermen were near us. I remember happening.

No-one could believe they'd been daft enough to go onto the pier - they weren't some young silly kids - they were adult men, and the weather was brutal and had been for days, with very high seas.

It was heartbreaking, but totally avoidable.

I don't understabd why so many posts say things like "how awful right before Christmas"....as if it makes any difference what time of year it is when your child dies? It's pretty crass.

And yes, kids play out, that's great. Mine do/did. But at 6, 8 years old, next to lake, in sub zero temperatures...that's not normal, or ok.

I've said it myself it's worse at Christmas because it's a huge thing for kids.
People will be partying, kids unwrapping presents on Christmas morning, playing out on bikes and the poor families will feel this. They probably have presents in the house too. Nobody is being crass.
I worked in an old people's home and one of the ladies lost her husband young at Christmas and she hated it ever since and she died in her 90s.

dropthevipers · 13/12/2022 16:08

Think that lad should receive a posthumous bravery award.

Pineconederby · 13/12/2022 16:13

Horrible news. Where are/were the parents? Very little being reported about who the kids were being supervised by at the time.

Because do you not think they families are going through enough right now without this

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/12/2022 16:14

Where are the parents?

Really?
In shock and grieving somewhere, don't you think?

Pineconederby · 13/12/2022 16:18

Obviously they’ll be in shock/grieving. Were they not with the children when they were on the ice?

Unforgettablefire · 13/12/2022 16:23

MilkyYay · 12/12/2022 19:55

I think these days sometimes we don't want children to be scared so don't warn them of how bad the consequences can be of things like this.

I think they need a little fear sometimes. The kid who won't go near the frozen pond because his mum has scared him telling him you can die really fast in freezing water, is the kid who stays alive.

Exactly. Its so much better than the possible alternative.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/12/2022 16:24

Why do you possibly need to know this information?

What do you want? A witch-hunt?
Do you not think they're going through enough without people pointing the finger?

QforCucumber · 13/12/2022 16:26

@Pineconederby probably at home, safe with the thought that their kids were just playing football out the back. Telling me you know every move of your 10 and 11 year olds?
