Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

Any update about the other children?
@YoSofi said 2 others missing.

Police have now confirmed they have had no reports of anyone missing, but because there was conflicting information from eye witnesses about the number of people on the lake at the time of the incident, they will continue to search to make sure there is nobody else in the water.

Utterly heartbreaking. Breaks my heart that it was kids. Find it even more sad as kids don't have the risk assessment skills most adults possess. If an adult wasn't around to tell them not to go on the ice then they might not have ever been taught how dangerous it is. When I was younger we had it drilled into us that you never, ever go on ice, because it can easily crack.

Fuck me, imagine being the emergency services trying to rescue three kids trapped under ice, the things they'll have seen. I really, really hope that education around the dangers of going on ice is increased as a result of such a tragedy.

Just a few miles from my house it’s knocked me sick. 😢 😢 😢 😢

@YoSofi said 2 others missing.

The police officer in the press conference said that no other children have been reported missing. Initial reports about the incident were confused hence the suggestion that there may initially have been six. Nevertheless he said that they are continuing to search the lake and will not stop until they are absolutely sure that no-one else has been lost.

Justthisonce12 · 12/12/2022 13:07

They arent from the same family. Not going to discuss how i know.

Kolakalia · 12/12/2022 13:10

People criticising the posters saying it's even sadder because it's right before Christmas can get in the sea tbh.

Having lost a loved one tragically the day before Christmas Eve, yes it's another layer of pain. Watching everyone around you celebrate with their family while part of yours is barely cold is horrible. They'll probably have already bought Christmas gifts for them under the tree. It's traumatic and tragic whichever day of the year it happens, but for many people it is additionally traumatising when it happens before, during or right after what is supposed to be a joyful family time. RIP.

Why is it rude and unpleasant? These ‘sympathy’ threads are just excuses to gossip.

Absolutely agree. I hate these posts. I don’t even know why I clicked on this one 😠

The worst thing is the speculation - ‘this will have happened, it must have been this…’

Also, just for anyone that is not sure of what service you would ask for in this type of situation, if you ring 999, you tell the operator that you require all 3 services, and they will put you through to the police who will notify ambo and fire. It then gets announced by BT as a "multiple service request for Police Fire and Ambulance".

Just calling it out before I do.

such sad news

Oh go away - whenever something tragic happens and people understandably post about it, there is always someone ready to swoop in to call every 'ghoulish' and 'grief vultures' to make themselves feel superior.

Those poor boys - was imagining teenagers for some reason, these kids were so young.

Agree.

It would be so much worse if this horrible tragedy was ignored and people just brushed it aside as nothing to do with them.

Can anyone think that such a loss should be ignored?

It's not"grief vulturing" - it's feeling the pain of the families and expressing concern and empathy. This is something that could hit any one of us - it touches us viscerally. We offer our sympathy and prayers because we care - not because we are "hand-wringers".

darisdet · 12/12/2022 13:24

Last I heard they were in critical condition and taken to hospital. A terrible tragedy.

BedTaker · 12/12/2022 13:25

I think that people come onto threads where a tragedy like this has happened just to accuse everyone of 'wanting to gossip', it says more about them than anyone else tbh.

Guitarbar · 12/12/2022 13:26

QforCucumber · 12/12/2022 12:17

@TerraNostra kids play out, it’s what they do (maybe not in your perfect parenting, watched like a hawk utopia) but in real life they play out; they will have been wrapped up for the weather and out playing, no different to any other day.

I actually think part of the problem is that children don't as much as we used to. Children would always be out playing in all weathers when I was younger, as such there was a lot of education around it at school and on the whole children knew the dangers and risks more. I think its great to see children actually outside and not indoors on a screen; of course in this case its bloody heartbreaking bless them.

I understand the point that people shouldn't speculate but gossip isn't the right word for why I clicked on this thread. This is mumsnet and children have tragically died in the news, of course parents on here will feel sad for those families.

Igotjelly · 12/12/2022 13:28

I also think part of it is recognising the wonderful work that our emergency services do.

Me too. I posted because I was so moved by what I’d heard, as well as the awfulness of it

Nice choice of words there, not.

YoSofi · 12/12/2022 13:35

Nothing worse than sanctimonious, holier-than-thou posters who come on to a clearly titled thread purely to state that they would NEVER normally comment, they would ALWAYS avoid such threads but just HAD to post about how awful everyone is for talking about such a tragedy.

Just calling it out @Tadpoll.

Could have been out with older siblings. 10/11 years old. Not unreasonable if the parents thought they were going snowballing just outside but lake close by. Told to watch younger sibling.

Horrific.
