Incident in Solihull

Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

@MabelMoo23 it actually doesn't wan anything. BCH would not be able to deal with 4 children in cardiac arrest at once. So the sensible thing is to spilt them up
With another major hospital.

Heartlands is less likely to cope than the childrens. It's a god awful hospital.

It's the age gap that made me wonder. I pray not.

The anchor on BBC News is holding back tears. It is unbearable.

I'm the same. It's not that I wish anything so dreadful on any family, but for one family to lose all of their precious children - there are just no words. . . .

I don't understabd why so many posts say things like "how awful right before Christmas"....as if it makes any difference what time of year it is when your child dies? It's pretty crass.

And yes, kids play out, that's great. Mine do/did. But at 6, 8 years old, next to lake, in sub zero temperatures...that's not normal, or ok.

It's 'pretty crass' to speculate on a situation you don't know the full details of, and to minimise how utterly horrendous it'll be for their poor parents having to face Christmas in a few days ( and every year going forward) without them

Eastereggs1 · 12/12/2022 12:45

From the BBC - one police officer was taken to hospital with ‘mild hypothermia’ and one tried to punch the ice to try to get to the boys (not sure if the same one) 😔

Yes it was the same one, police confirmed.

HelloagainLilibet · 12/12/2022 12:46

Utterly tragic - my heart goes out to all those children and their families.

the way it was described in the press conference it was the same officer. The emergency services are worth their weight in gold in these tragedies. They only had their uniform on no specialist PPE. I've had a cry at work for the boys, the families and the community

RooBear9 · 12/12/2022 12:47

Absolutely heartbreaking, this is literally round the corner from me, I can't even begin to imagine the pain their families must be in.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 12/12/2022 12:48

It does appear that they were all related but quite rightly the police don't want to confirm that until the family are ready.

They said that they've received no reports of any further missing people but need to be absolutely sure before calling off the search.

LateAF · 12/12/2022 12:49

canyon2000 · 12/12/2022 12:32

The policeman said 'the family' so it seems they could be brothers.

Yes I just finished watching and noticed he referred to “the family” singular a few times, until a journalist ask him if they were all from the same family and he declined to answer. How utterly utterly tragic. More so if one family has lost 3 children.

The first responders entered the lake in their normal clothing to try and fing the point of entry.

I have direct experience of the children's A&E at Heartlands. It was my experience that the emergency care was excellent but deteriorates once the child is admitted to a ward. It is a fairly small department however and I think only has one or two dedicated resus bays.

It's normal for care to be divided between major trauma centres after a significant incident.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2022 12:51

Heard this on radio this morning. So awful

Those that jumped in to help were heroes, police etc

Very sad

BarrelOfOtters · 12/12/2022 12:53

Done nothing for their level of anxiety or bad mental health, either, its all got worse.
Anxiety was unheard of when I was a kid, as were MH issues in children/teenagers, and pretty much most of the community.@CourtneeLuv

I just can't agree with that. Undiagnosed or underdiagnosed maybe. Or children who spent a lot of their life in institutions. Friends at school with, looking back, was depression. Mothers on all sorts of medication.

I'm in my mid 50s.

Those public announcements back in the 70's were very very haunting and thought provoking

As a child I hated them. But we DO need them back to cover this kind of topic, as well as for drug use etc.

They need to have the shock factor though, sadly, parents would complain about them if we had them back

I live in the Netherlands and kids here still get taught about the dangers of going on thin ice and what to do if you go through.

So for example don't swim towards a light patch in the ice above your head but the hole in the ice will be black. If the ice creaks, get down slowly on your belly as you spread your weight and if you go through chances of shooting under the ice is smaller. These lessons are still needed because as soon as there is ice here, everyone is on the ditches, canals and lakes. Myself included I admit

Daffodilsandtuplips · 12/12/2022 12:56

So terribly sad for the parents, family and friends of all concerned. I pass no judgement, there isn’t any to be had. No one will be feeling the pain like the parents today. Tragic, no matter the time of year.
Cold water shock kills , it causes the heart to stop. Four minutes in the water without survival suits is all it takes.

StEval · 12/12/2022 12:58

Ch3wylemon · 12/12/2022 12:16

My heart goes out to their parents, relatives and friends.

You can't judge children for being children. The Times have a fine example of adult stupidity today showing a picture of skating on the fens in their best pictures section. It's not an activity that should be celebrated.

They are skating on the flooded fields a foot or so deep not on a river, its a centuries old tradition on the fens and perfectly safe

excelledyourself · 12/12/2022 12:58

How traumatising for the emergency services. I imagine the impact on them and their own families is something that we can never truly appreciate comprehend.

LadyMary50 · 12/12/2022 12:59

Numbat2022 · 12/12/2022 12:25

Skating on the Fens is actually relatively safe - it's mostly very shallow water, flood water over meadowland - rather than a deep lake. Obviously there are deep areas, but it's generally regarded as a safe activity by locals.

I lived in the Fens for many years and the deepest the meadow is flooded is 2ft,it’s specifically done to freeze over for the Fen skating. No comparison to a deep lake..

mumonherphone · 12/12/2022 13:00

I think they are probably still searching in case any members of the public went in after the children, as they had conflicting reports about the number of people/children who went into the water. But it's reassuring that nobody else has been reported missing.

Hoping and praying for the six year old boy still alive.

Dinnerdate1 · 12/12/2022 13:00

It's so sad.
I can remember us going out as kids and playing in builders sand and throwing it about,
Exploring abandoned houses and even pushing a broken wall over Confused. We was forever out on our bikes and used to play in this forest which was so dangerous and scary but we didn't see the dangers.
Poor kids and poor parents it's not one's fault just a sad tragedy.

StEval · 12/12/2022 12:58

But the point is that publications like The Times are showing pictures like this as a 'quintessential English thing to do' and how beautiful it looks and how much fun it can be. There is no disclaimer or consideration for the fact that people wouldn't realise that a lake in Solihull is less safe than the Fens.

It is irresponsible journalism (as always)

Any update about the other children?
@YoSofi said 2 others missing.

See my earlier post, the police don't believe anyone else is missing but are continuing the search of the lake just in case. If anyone is found I would imagine it will be an adult as a child should have been reported missing by now.
