Dettol Baths

Has anyone had a dettol bath? I saw it on TikTok last night and I've never heard of it before!

But so many people said they swear by them. I use it to mop. Never occurred to me to bath in it but I love the smell so I'm intrigued

I have them and always did as a child.

Dettol is an antiseptic so will help clean and heal any cuts you have.

Too much of it can be harmful though, so you have to be careful not to pour too much in.

I always use it as disinfect too, as I think it must be safer for skin and paws to walk over than other chemicals.

Not if you have cats! Dettol is toxic to them as is any disinfectant that makes water cloudy.

Yep, we used to have dettol added to our weekly bath in the 70s, I think because we used to play out a lot and were constantly covered in scratches and grazes. It's definitely a thing!

topcat2014 · 11/12/2022 16:31

Best not mention how I put the odd squirt of bleach in mine when eczema is bad..

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/12/2022 16:32

I knew someone who worked at Rickett (who owns the Dettol brand) who said it was a originally a marketing ploy to get people to use more Dettol, as a capful in a bath becomes so diluted as to have no affect at all.

I do like the smell though - much nicer than Jeyes Fluid or Brobat

Going off topic a bit, but genuinely surprised at so many on this thread saying they don't like the smell of Dettol!😯

It's one of the best smells in the world along with Vicks Vapo rub and Deep Heat!

Can I add Germoline ? Used to love those little tins if it.

CremeEggThief · 11/12/2022 16:56

Yes! Agree with Germolene too. Lush smell!

We live in the country and the waste pipe from the house occasionally gets blocked, so DH has to clear it. I always make him have a Dettol bath after that.

It smells very nice and soothing, but I wouldn't have one just for fun.

TribeD · 11/12/2022 17:25

Very regularly as a child, but I can't remember having one from 6 or 7 onwards. Generally the Sunday bath was a dettol bath after spending the week grazing knees, rolling around the rec and making mud pies.

StickofVeg · 11/12/2022 17:51

My gran used to have one every week without fail. I am not sure why but she thought they were healthy. I had one a few months ago as I was about to have a bath but realised I didn't have any bubbles for it.. and there was a bottle of Dettol in the cupboard so I used it and remembered my gran! It was actually really nice!

LBOCS2 · 11/12/2022 18:01

I had one when I fell through a manhole cover into a sewer, I was covered in grazes and it seemed like the easiest way of rinsing everything out. Haven't since, but I do love the smell.

BIWI · 11/12/2022 18:10

I'll add Pears soap to the list of lovely smells!

Wherediditallgo · 11/12/2022 18:24

Pears soap reminds me of my auntie’s house.

brownbeauty80 · 11/12/2022 18:33

Been waiting for a post like this..
Me n my cousins would get together in the summer holidays at grandmas house for the whole 6 weeks...
We would be out playing in the street till 8pm then it was straight into the bathroom for a dettol bath...
A bucket of scalding but bearable hot water with a cap full of dettol to kill the germs..
and a good old scrub with the loofah..
my grandma would also put our pjs inside the bed with the electric blanket on...
Total bliss in those days...
Kids there's days won't even experience this..
also used to have banana's in custard by the fire in winter but this would only happen at grandmas house...

I dab my eczema with diluted bleach . Works a treat when it is really grim.

imjustanerd · 11/12/2022 18:52

Yeah I had loads of dettol baths as a kid in the 80's. My mum always gave me one if I'd had lots of scrapes on my knees.

sidesplittinglol · 11/12/2022 19:42

It's not the same dettol that you use for cleaning. I've also heard of it but never had it before

It absolutely is.

These smells, plus PP mentions of Vosene and Pears soap are the essence of my childhood! A visit to Gran’s house was never complete without an ecstatic sniff of the Vicks jar on her bathroom washstand. There was also an amazing smelling chilblain cream….

Whatthediddlyfeck · 11/12/2022 14:20

Used to have one occasionally as a child in the 70s-usually if I’d fallen over and given myself gravel rash-it got a good clean out!

This… in the 80s. Would consider it nowadays

Yes it is… Just don’t get it confused with floradil

blackheartsgirl · 11/12/2022 20:18

Love a dettol bath. Not had one for years though.

my kids dad used to have one every week after playing for his footie team as a teenager,

I fancy one now. I just do the bath salts these days

user1634987 · 11/12/2022 20:21

DH has soaked his feet in Dettol a few times it stinks the house out, I couldn't imagine a whole bath of it.

Neverknowinglysensible · 11/12/2022 20:26

I always had dettol in baths as a child. I still automatically put a lid full in the bath, and I know my brother does the same as he was distraught when he could only find the vile lavender version in our local Tesco so came to raid my supply!
In my case I guess it must be habit as the smell is entirely covered by whatever bubble bath I’m using.
