Dettol Baths

Has anyone had a dettol bath? I saw it on TikTok last night and I've never heard of it before!

But so many people said they swear by them. I use it to mop. Never occurred to me to bath in it but I love the smell so I'm intrigued

used to do this all the time , maybe should start again as i was never ill when younger ,

It's very much a generational thing, and stems from the days when workers were involved in much more manual (and therefore dirty) work. Presumably the habit continued with children, who were also likely to have dirty/grazed hands and knees!

Only a capful per bath and it did turn the water cloudy. A very comforting smell I seem to remember.

Dettol baths destroyed my cousins skin - her mum ha OCD and they all have severe skin issues. Do not do this.

There’s nothing wrong with a dettol bath

Haffiana · 11/12/2022 15:40

I used to have an old antique bottle of Dettol from the 1950s. It had the instructions on the back for how to dilute to use as a vaginal douche as well as in the bath.

I am amazed that people are still using it in the bath. I mean, people who do not have hygiene-based mental health issues.

I can kind of see why parents back then did give kids Dettol baths and the like . Previous generations of children had so much freedom, and to be honest being out in the wild we must have come home filthy . Add in all the cuts and scrapes we had accumulated in the day I can see there was nothing else for it but to dip us in Dettol .

Almost 30 years ago after having my first, and a lot of stitches, I had dettol baths to "keep areas clean"
I vaguely remember the midwife suggesting it
Quite liked the smell, never even thought about it since!

CarefreeMe · 11/12/2022 15:43

I have them and always did as a child.

Dettol is an antiseptic so will help clean and heal any cuts you have.

Too much of it can be harmful though, so you have to be careful not to pour too much in.

I always use it as disinfect too, as I think it must be safer for skin and paws to walk over than other chemicals.

My ex DH used to put Dettol in his bath once a week. He had quite bad acne on his back and was convinced that it would kill off any bacteria on his skin. It seemed to work from what i remember but the smell was very off putting!

Brokendaughter · 11/12/2022 15:44

In the 70s if we had a graze or had been somewhere 'unsanitary' we'd be dumped in a bath with a capful of Dettol (or 2 if we'd been somewhere my mother considered 'very dirty').

She wasn't OCD & our house had a perfectly normal level of dirt, but places like motorway service station toilets have always been grim.

By the 80s she wasn't involved in bathing me, but she continued to do this to my brother until he got old enough to wash himself & I think she still does it for herself.

There has always been a bottle of Dettol (plus a bottle of TCP & one of Calamine Lotion) in the bathroom cabinet for as long as I can recall.

AnybodyAnywhere · 11/12/2022 15:46

DH has Dettol baths and uses it in his underwear wash. He does have a bit of a ‘thing’ about hygiene and thinking he smells so all clothes and towels have to be washed after every use and he likes to bathe twice a day. He’s expensive but at least he’s not skanky.

VerbenaGirl · 11/12/2022 15:47

My friend always had these as a child in the 80s - I’d never heard of it, but it was totally normal in their house and other of our friends didn’t seem all that surprised.

tuvamoodyson · 11/12/2022 15:47

Mum used to do it for us when we were children when we’d been out playing and had cuts and grazes to our knees etc.

I used to be angrily plunged in one when I wet the bed as a toddler, whilst being screamed at

🙀

TabithaTittlemouse · 11/12/2022 15:53

Xh used to use dettol in every bath. It was one of the many things that irritated me about him.

isthismylifenow · 11/12/2022 15:56

Ooh yes, we would have a dettol bath about once a week or as an when needed. Having a brother thst fell and came off his bike constantly was a fa tor I think.

I did this for my DC when they were younger.

Good memories of the bath water going all milky.

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 11/12/2022 15:58

Fun fact: the smell of dettol makes me faint, so I probably shouldn't bathe in it! Passed out when my mum was cleaning an infected ear piercing when I was a tween and it set up a psychosomatic reaction.

Lampzade · 11/12/2022 15:58

I still have them now. Just a cupful of dettol in a bath

CharityShopChic · 11/12/2022 15:59

My mum used to give us dettol baths when as children we were utterly manky - like spent all day digging in the garden, climbing trees and rolling down hills manky.

Not regularly though, I think probably 3 or 4 times in my childhood.

Abhannmor · 11/12/2022 16:00

When we got 'heat hives' my nan used to dab our backs with methylated spirit. Stopped the itching !

Rebelmcstreettuff · 11/12/2022 16:00

Yes very common in Irish households.

Lampzade · 11/12/2022 16:00

The only thing is dettol is very expensive

Quadrangle · 11/12/2022 16:02

Had them as a kid in the 70s

Ah those memories of rolling down hills , playing in streams , just getting absolutely filthy . 😃

I used to get them growing up.

Iamnotausername · 11/12/2022 16:22

My Dad would give us dettol baths occassionally. Not sure why tbh.
I often get athletes foot and when it gets pretty bad I've do a dettol foot soak.
