Dettol Baths

Has anyone had a dettol bath? I saw it on TikTok last night and I've never heard of it before!

But so many people said they swear by them. I use it to mop. Never occurred to me to bath in it but I love the smell so I'm intrigued

In my experience they are a cultural thing. I used to have a housemate who had them.

Stichintime · 11/12/2022 14:08

Very common in some cultures. I've never had one, but definitely would if I had an infection or had been in a contaminated or filthy environment.

Can’t think of anything worse!
It can’t be good for the old fanjo flaps…

Failingateverything · 11/12/2022 14:12

I’ve done it before when I had a flare up of eczema that got infected. It did help. I really didn’t like the smell though.

Alan Partridge is partial to a bath with a capful of dettol in.

icclemunchy · 11/12/2022 14:16

My nan used to give us these now and then when we were kids

RocketIceLollie · 11/12/2022 14:17

Dettol is quite a strong smell. Not sure I'd want to smell of Eau De Dettol....

dancingqueen123 · 11/12/2022 14:18

My friend's mum used to do this for us in the 80's 🤣

Pinkflipflop85 · 11/12/2022 14:19

My grandad had one dettol bath a week.

Us kids had them weekly in the 80s!

Whatthediddlyfeck · 11/12/2022 14:20

Used to have one occasionally as a child in the 70s-usually if I’d fallen over and given myself gravel rash-it got a good clean out!

RuthW · 11/12/2022 14:24

Yes always in the 80 s

Waitingforsomethingtostart · 11/12/2022 14:25

I have dettol baths very occasionally - Great relieve if you have an abscess, I don't think the smell really lasts and I rinse off afterwards anyway - don't wash my hair in a dettol bath. I tend to only have them when I have something physically wrong, but they do seem quite soothing to me! Also are great for kids when they have great big scrapes from a day of exploring!

Waitingforsomethingtostart · 11/12/2022 14:28

*relief not relieve. I couldn't work out why that looked wrong!

gianfrancogorgonzola · 11/12/2022 14:29

Yes this was a thing in the 80s

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 11/12/2022 14:30

I remember it as a kid on 2 occasions. Not sure why.

ImOutOfTouch · 11/12/2022 14:31

I've never had one but I know it's a thing. I do use the bar of dettol soap though.

Dogsogdog · 11/12/2022 14:37

Always had them as a kid, cupful of dettol or savlon

Babyg1995 · 11/12/2022 14:41

I still have 1 once a week

bonzaitree · 11/12/2022 14:42

I can understand if you have an infection or large cut or graze.

what’s the purpose of having one weekly?

holierthanthou73 · 11/12/2022 14:43

It’s a very West Indian thing highly recommended

Sigma33 · 11/12/2022 14:44

We did as kids in the 70s!

allthecrooksandnannies · 11/12/2022 14:46

Love a dettol bath! Takes me back to my childhood.

limitedperiodonly · 11/12/2022 14:53

I remember my dad occasionally had Dettol baths from the 1960s onwards. He was born in 1918. It was very common. He occasionally got flare ups of painful boils though he was very clean - probably because he longed to stop getting painful boils.

Looking back, it was probably a strep infection of the skin though none of us ever got ill with that. He was careful not to share towels and told you not to touch him when he had a boil - that was probably because they hurt so much he probably would have gone through the roof.

He had a carbuncle on the back of his neck once. It's a multi-headed boil. We were allowed to look at it and it was pulsating red and white like there were maggots in it waiting to burst out. My dad's carbuncle is simultaneously the most revolting and greatest thing I have ever seen.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 11/12/2022 14:54

It's an old fashioned thing we used to have them as kids at grandparents if we had cuts, scrapes, colds etc and I did have them after my various laps when undergoing fertility tests and after my EMCS and I never had any issues with wound management or infections this could be coincidental but who knows.

SleepCheeseBeer · 11/12/2022 14:54

I'm 40. The smell of a dettol bath reminds me of my childhood.
Every bath we had had dettol (and matey) in at as I was always scratched and scuffed from playing out.

If I ever have a bath which is very rare I'll put dettol in it. Did a few post natal dettol baths as well.

I also put it in my kids baths when they have cuts or scrapes.
A lot less than me as they aren't as stupid as I was.
