Dettol Baths

Has anyone had a dettol bath? I saw it on TikTok last night and I've never heard of it before!

But so many people said they swear by them. I use it to mop. Never occurred to me to bath in it but I love the smell so I'm intrigued

When I was pregnant with my first I LOVED a Dettol bath. 2 baths a day then, either Dettol or blue radox salts. When my mat leave started before she was born I would sometimes up the game with an extra afternoon bath. The smell really hit the spot😂
She's 15 now - I've never felt the need to Dettol bath since

ThreeFeetTall · 11/12/2022 14:58

Relieved to have continued to read this thread and find out it's one capful of dettol rather than a whole bath filled to the brim with pure dettol Grin

I had to have a minor operation in about 1983/1984 and a nurse ran me a dettol bath before I went down to theatre. Not had one before or since and I’d forgotten all about it until this thread.

Can’t think of anything worse!
It can’t be good for the old fanjo flaps…

I thought exactly the same Grin

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 11/12/2022 15:04

DH has them (and has had since the 70s), and he also shovels handfuls of Radox salts into each bath.

My flaps shrivel just thinking about how dry my skin would be if I did that!

greenacrylicpaint · 11/12/2022 15:04

helped dc eczema a lot.

CourtneeLuv · 11/12/2022 15:08

Love a dettol bath!

I used to love the smell of vosene too.

Georgeskitchen · 11/12/2022 15:12

Vaguely remember having one or two dettol baths back in the late 60s as a kid. the one thing that stands out in my memory was that it turned the water white like milk 😁
@limitedperiodonly your dad's carbuncle sounds fascinating!! As a kid I found things like that were horrifying and fascinating in equal measure. I hope it healed up OK xx

Yarnosaura · 11/12/2022 15:12

Growing up in the 70s, baths were mostly a pungent mix of Matey, Dettol and Vosene.

For special occasions, Fenjal in the bath and Vidal Sassoon shampoo.

JorisBonson · 11/12/2022 15:15

I've got BV just thinking about it.

Haha! I just worked out how much it would cost to have a purely dettol bath. At boots it costs £3.25 for 500ml, and I checked an average bath size is 80 litres.

So £3.25 x 160... would be £520.00. And it would be cold!

That's much more expensive than a milk bath (never had one of those).

pinneddownbytabbies · 11/12/2022 15:20

I think I remember having them occasionally when I was a small child because I'd got nastily grazed knees or some such, with dirt imbedded in them. It was so the sore knees could have a long soak and the dettol would get rid of any germs.
My DM may have used TCP rather than dettol though.

DeathMetalMum · 11/12/2022 15:23

Yes early 90's. If I'd scraped my knees which I did all the time, my mum would make me have a dettol bath.

Murasakispillowbook · 11/12/2022 15:25

My grandad bathed in Dettol. And also used TCP at most opportunities.

You're lucky you got Matey when we got (my sister and me ) a bubble bath in the 70's it was washing up liquid . Anyway after Mother finished washing us she left us time to play ( big mistake ) . We spied she'd left the washing -up liquid , so the whole lot went in the bath . Took forever to get rid of the foam .😱

Neighbours87 · 11/12/2022 15:26

My Mum always out a capful of dettol in our baths as kids

XanaduKira · 11/12/2022 15:27

I wonder if sepsis was less prevalent then, or if there is no connection at all!

Ducksurprise · 11/12/2022 15:28

We have them, before and after a hospital stay, if someone has come a cropper and grazed their skin and after unpleasant cleaning jobs. Love them, but only Dettol, the knock off ones smell weird.

Simonjt · 11/12/2022 15:30

We always had a dettol (well, different brand) bath every Sunday as children, I often add it to baths.

unclebuck · 11/12/2022 15:30

Dettol baths destroyed my cousins skin - her mum ha OCD and they all have severe skin issues. Do not do this.

CremeEggThief · 11/12/2022 15:31

Oh I had one after coming home from the hospital after giving birth in 2002! As the shower in the birthing suite was broken and the one on the ward was filthy, it was my 1st wash a good 36 hours after giving birth.

lipstickwoman · 11/12/2022 15:31

Surely you'd need LOADS of it to have any disinfectant properties. It would be so diluted

Multipleexclamationmarks · 11/12/2022 15:34

I think its an old fashioned thing rather than cultural?
We used to have them in the 70's/80's as kids particularly if we'd fallen over and had grazed knees.
My auntie used to put a bit of dettol in her washing.

MadameMackenzie · 11/12/2022 15:35

I used to be angrily plunged in one when I wet the bed as a toddler, whilst being screamed at

rc22 · 11/12/2022 15:36

I never had a dettol bath but my mum used to dilute some dettol in warm water a get me to dab it on my teenage acne with cotton wool. Can't remember whether it helped much.
