Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

What a lucky escape.

Why are you livid? I'd be relieved.

It's presumably the shopping mall/precinct/owners of building that are responsible for maintenance so hopefully Peacocks will now tell them about the near miss.

Lampan · 11/12/2022 12:51

I suspect you’d be wasting your time. Nothing actually happened to you.
You have to ask yourself, what would you be hoping to achieve by emailing? If you don’t have a clear aim in mind, I wouldn’t bother.

Mischance · 11/12/2022 12:51

Yup - write to management.

PAFMO · 11/12/2022 12:51

PS why would she ask if you were OK when it was clear that you were. You weren't injured or hit. You just saw a bit of ceiling come down.

You won't get compensation for that.

StrongTea · 11/12/2022 12:51

Contact health and safety or local council. Certainly should have been put in accident book. Glad you were ok.

Penaltyshootoutfan · 11/12/2022 12:51

Why are you absolutely livid? No harm was done, sure they should maintain , so being a little dismayed I get, but rhe absolutely livid? Is there a back story? Do you have anger management issues?

Penaltyshootoutfan · 11/12/2022 12:53

What do you didn’t even have your son near you?

are you trying to get comp for the trauma of it or something?😳

I'm livid because they obviously knew it was a bit of a dangerous area with a massive leak up there and they didn't mark off the area. Just seemed like it was asking for trouble to be honest.

I'd just think, wow that was lucky I wasn't over there and get on with my day. No emailing required.

VioletLemon · 11/12/2022 12:54

This would enrage me too as it's so dangerous, how much of the rest of the roof/Building is compromised.

I'd report this to environmental health or health & safety exec for your LA.

He would have been right where the roof came down as im normally on my own but luckily his dad wheeled him off with him. Like i said, im just pissed off that the store knew there was a massive leak and the ceiling was in crappy condition. It would just be common sense to cordon off the area thats what im mad at.

Livid is a strong word but the fact they knew it was dangerous is what makes me angry. And no im normally a fairly chilled person. But a bit of roof couldve caved in on my sons pram so yeah, im feeling a little put out

But op wasn’t injured, she didn’t have an accident.
A bit of ceiling cladding -not tiles, slate or brick presumably-fell down onto the shop floor.

Op you cannot live your life in ‘it could have’ mode. It’s not healthy.

OurChristmasMiracle · 11/12/2022 12:58

I think you have the right to be livid- they were fully aware that there was an issue with leaking and therefore the ceiling as well and had been for some time but have failed to address the issue or ensure safety of both staff and customers. Whilst no one was hurt that was luck not because of safety measures in place.

LazyJayne · 11/12/2022 12:59

What outcome do you want? An apology? Assurance that they’ve ‘reviewed their procedures and it won’t happen again’? Money? A voucher?

Suzysuz · 11/12/2022 13:00

I'd definitely report, it's classed as a near miss - yes OP is fine but it could've been very different and is obviously a known issue that has not been dealt with.
If you look at HSE where they've charged people/companies, so many accidents where people have been seriously injured or even killed sadly, could've been avoided.
Yes my work involves buildings and bit of H&S 😊

butterfliedtwo · 11/12/2022 13:00

Be relieved nothing happened.

Exactly, thank you for wording it better than i did :) Im fine now thinking about it its mainly just the fact thay theyve been aware of this for some time and havent addressed the issue. But anyway...thank you!

Just an apology would do that they've been aware of the issue for a while and haven't done anything about it. And then maybe they would actually fix it. 🙄

"But a bit of roof couldve caved in on my sons pram so yeah, im feeling a little put out"

Well lots of things could have happened. But nothing did.

Mabelface · 11/12/2022 13:03

I would. Someone's massively dropped the health and safety ball here and it needs logging as a near miss. Write to the ceo and also contact the health and safety executive. This has the potential for serious injury, and you reporting this may help avoid it.

YourMommaWasASnowblower · 11/12/2022 13:03

I wouldn’t email the shop I would contact them on any social media page the store might have. Emailing them probably wont do anything, but people publicly knowing that the shop has compromised peoples safety by ignoring a leak might.

Plexie · 11/12/2022 13:04

In health and safety terminology it's known as a 'near miss' and the shop staff should be reporting it internally, but I wouldn't trust them to. If I were you I'd report it to Peacocks head office.

BrieAndChilli · 11/12/2022 13:04

I think being livid is a bit of an overreaction. We all have ‘near misses’ all the time, from being 2 cars away from an accident, to tripping over something.

i think the focus here isn’t what may or may not have happened if circumstances were different as that is subjective and did not happen.

as a good citizen you might want to email peacocks, explain the state of the roof and suggest that the look into it as a health and safety matter.
