Im absolutely livid...thinking about sending a strongly worded email...

Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

Your son wasn’t there so all that information about him is unnecessary and the ceiling didn’t come down on you so I don’t know why you’re ‘absolutely livid’. The woman in the shop has far more right to be ‘absolutely livid’ as she was much more likely to be stood there at that time than you were as she works there so spends more time there and the leak is known about and not fixed. They haven’t looked after their employee’s safety and you think she should be falling all over herself for you? Behave.

A bit of roof came down over the childrens section of the store where parents, babies and kids walk. That in itself is the issue as this was known about. An apology from whoever should be in charge of health and safety and them fixing this issue would be nice.

By 'roof' do you mean the ceiling panels that are quite light?

I mean it's not pleasant when they fall down but it's nothing to be 'livid' about either.

The fact she didn't ask if you were ok points to the fact you very obviously were.

But op wasn’t injured, she didn’t have an accident.
A bit of ceiling cladding -not tiles, slate or brick presumably-fell down onto the shop floor.

Op you cannot live your life in ‘it could have’ mode. It’s not healthy.

It should still have gone in an accident book as a "near miss", these then (theoretically) are reported to HO and they can use it to try and avoid anything similar happening in the future.

Thank you, this is exactly it. Im grateful it didn't come down on my son, but it easily could have. And the same goes for someone else walking under there with their kids. Livid is probably a strong work but i wasnt exacty jumping for joy! 😳

@Twdfn123 please do contact the council. The fact they know the roof is dangerous and aren’t doing anything is just appalling and against all health and safety guidelines.

Can we see the photo?

I think it might be easier to understand why you felt the way you did.

Why would they personally apologise to you? Nothing happened to you. Your kid wasn’t even with you . What are you on about?

Because it's just basic manners

LizzieSiddal · 11/12/2022 13:44

Sorry x posted. Glad you’ve emailed the council.

Hi OP, I work for a retailer in a department which would receive these sort of issues from time to time.

if you feel like doing your civic duty (and you may need to. It sounds like there may not have been a manager in the store who would know how to escalate this) I’d suggest emailing the Peacocks customer service team, describing what happened and ask that you receive a response from either the Property team or a member of the Health and Safety to confirm that they’ve received your email and will handle the problem. They’re unlikely to be able to tell you straightaway just what they’re going to do, as if this is a shopping centre, as others have pointed out, they may be getting in touch with the centre management team to handle things, but you will at least know you’ve reached a team who will be able to manage the situation.

LizzieSiddal · 11/12/2022 13:46

@Twdfn123 ignore the goady posters. You’ve every right to feel annoyed at what’s happened.

SeemsSoUnfair · 11/12/2022 13:46

What actually "caved in". It would depend if it was a bit of light and fairly harmless polystyrene tile or huge chunk of heavy plaster ceiling.

LaraReign · 11/12/2022 13:47

Can almost guarantee there will be no photo posted.

thank you, ive emailed peacocks customer service team and my town council so i know ive done my bit to make sure they at least know the roof is a potential safety hazard at the moment

Mabelface · 11/12/2022 13:47

Fuck me. This is actually a serious matter. The shop has failed to risk assess the ongoing issue, repairs have not been made and this is legally classed as a near miss and legally needs to be recorded on Riddor. They've breached health and safety regulations. This is not about a daily wail comp face and I'm not surprised the OP was shaken. Behave!

Crazydoglady1980 · 11/12/2022 13:48

Please do report this, recently a child died in a shop when a barrier fell on him. There had been a number of minor injuries and near misses which hadn’t been properly reported. If they had been and the issue had been sorted, that child would still be alive

Jojo19834 · 11/12/2022 13:49

I would write a complaint, yes you are ok, but I’m guessing you are livid because that shouldn’t have happened and could have been worse/can still be worse. You are right that if they know there is an issue they should not be hoping everything will be ok, and if not, have insurance to protect - it should be rectified and cordoned off until then

Don't bother putting the lottery on.

Your predictions are sh*te.

Twdfn123 · 11/12/2022 13:53

I get that its not a massive concrete roof thats come down but my 2 main things are:-

  1. they knew this issue was there and did nothing, the walls are covered in brown spots and drip marks so this is only going to get worse if not fixed and possibly lead to an actual accident,
  2. these tiles are dense with water so heavy and sharp edges. If that comes down on a person, baby or child the wrong way it could cause some damage.

Although im sure some of you wont see the problem in it and just be fine and dandy if this fell in to your kids pram by the sound of it 😳

Even if that didn't hurt anyone, it could frighten a small child. It is shameful that it wasn't dealt with sooner.

Is this the Peacocks which sells medical aids etc? If so a lot of their clientele are physically very vulnerable - many unsteady on their feet.

But even if it's a different Peacocks, no-one wants anything landing on their heads.

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/12/2022 13:55

OP you have done exactly the right thing - there are some twonks on here. Ignore them.
