Shows that go stupid

So I've become addicted to Lie To Me. Started brilliant, ended up fucking ridiculous. I can see why season 4 didn't happen.
Like the mentalist - loved it, cried when he found Red John and killed him in the cafe. But no! They had to carry on and rewrite that.

Definitely Glee and prison break. Also became really disappointed with scrubs and smallville after about season 5. But the worst for me is the Royle Family. The first couple of seasons were brilliant and then the characters just became bizarre imitations of themselves. It was dire by the end.

100% The Royle Family! It used to be so funny, and it just turned into some bizarre spoof ‘comedy’, it was awful!!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/12/2022 08:48

X- Files, was great when it was Scully and Mulder diving crimes. But then got carried away with conspiracy theories. I completely lost the plot.

Call the Midwife, love it but it's run out of stories and time to stop.

ohyouknowwhatshername · 10/12/2022 08:49

I know it's a bit different as it's a soap, but I stopped watching Eastenders when Kat and someone I can't even remember swapped babies and the Mum didn't notice. I mean, come on now.

But that wasn’t Red John in the cafe.
It was one of his acolytes.

Not Going Out - was never the same after they got together.

glamourousindierockandroll · 10/12/2022 08:53

Suits

In the early series there's a nice friendship between the main character millionaire lawyer Harvey and his secretary. The rival lawyer in the firm is seen to be very capable but not as suave as the main character and this causes resentment.

As the series get better, the rival lawyer becomes a buffoonish charicature and the friendship with the secretary becomes a romance. It just would not happen for that character. He's quite snobbish and arrogant and equally high status women are forever in his orbit.

Floridana · 10/12/2022 08:57

I agree Benidorm got silly. It was starting to run out of steam when the Garveys left but after that it became like a particularly bad school play. They kept trying to fan life back into it by bringing back past characters but much past series 5 seemed a lost cause. That episode where someone is clearly imitating the late Kenny Ireland on the phone to Jacqueline was heartbreaking because it signified the best characters had left or died. I think I have it up for good around the time Joyce got married.

Oh and Person of Interest. I loved that and it just went so random.

I agree, loved the first series, the end was a bit confusing/stupid.

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/12/2022 08:59

Neighbours.
Dallas.

Once you're relying on it "all being a dream " it's time to call it a day.

OneFrenchEgg · 10/12/2022 09:03

It was one of his acolytes.

I felt that it was him, but then the show backtracked and rewrote it that it wasn't. It was such a perfect potential ending.
I hated that they got together in the end and she was pregnant it was just so twee after the series had been quite gritty at times.

Casualty.

Have been a fan since the very beginning and of course there were always stories which required a healthy dose of "suspending reality", but when Jan started stealing drugs from dead people and smuggling them into prison it completely jumped the shark and I no longer watch it.

Line of duty, I won’t post a spoiler but it was never ever him and I am very disappointed in Jed for even thinking he could pull that one over us. The first 5.5 series are some of the best tv I’ve ever watched. Second half of 6, I was so disappointed.

Yes. It made no sense!

I can't agree with the Walking Dead though. Yes it was ridiculous, but I loved it regardless 😂

woodhill · 10/12/2022 09:46

Killing a Eve became tedious

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/12/2022 09:57

Agree with good wife.was really good. But alicia amd will like zero chemistry he was an.arsehole and it turned into another show where a leading lady obviously cant just be strong akd single she has to waste time.and energy on shit men.

Riverdale lost the plot

Agree with arrested development too. That whole not even being in the same.pmave at the same.time due to schedule clashes was a joke.

Prison break I love but agree after a tense first season which ended up not even needing a damn thing hed done amd not explaining how he filled a tunnel with water without it leaking out the entrance to said tunnel chamber he used was a bit odd. Season 4 redeemed it a bit but there was a feeling that the writers hadn't figured out whT would happen.after ,who the characters were going to be to eachother and were making it up.as they went along.

OiNTB. So many good bits but some weird bits to.

New Amsterdam- the second series was bad enough but the most recent is just utterly ridiculous.

Greys is dire - should have stopped 5 series ago/ can somebody please kill off bloody Owen Hunt!

The problem with American series is they just don't know when to stop!

I rend to agree that most American series go on too long, but Six Feet Under and Ozark, both brilliant, stopped at exactly right time.

Oh I used to love Casualty and Holly. I stopped watching when Owen and Chrissie split up and she had a baby and was back at work so soon after the c section and the baby dying. None of it made sense.

S5 of New Amsterdam seems to be better than the shitshow that was S4 so far (and I hope I haven't cursed that now). I usually never give up on shows but that one had me very close. I might just pretend S4 didn't happen.

ShinyPikachu · 10/12/2022 11:18

One thing I hate in shows, seems to be mostly in crime and hospital based ones, is that you can tell when they're struggling for conflict style storylines so they bring in a new boss who wants to shut the department down for "costcutting" reasons no matter how good the department is.

New Amsterdam reminded me of that with their recent story of that and the new Criminal Minds is doing it too. It's weird but it sets my anxiety on edge and I don't enjoy the show as much when they do that.

Cinecitta · 10/12/2022 11:20

Killing Eve. Started brilliantly then it got silly. When they turned the main married female character (Eve) to a lesbian and paired her up with the lesbian villain I got pissed off. I think the filmmakers just wanted to show how woke and pc they are. Pf..

PuppyMonkey · 10/12/2022 11:32

Coronation Street is surely the ultimate example of this.Grin

… otherwise it’s Peaky Blinders. Only just made it through the first series, the second one onwards it became unwatchably daft and pretentious.

SnowlayRoundabout · 10/12/2022 13:05

The Bill. As I've been reminding myself while rewatching it on Drama, it started off as quite a sensible, realistic depiction of ordinary police work through the medium of one-off stories with little or no reference to the cops' personal lives. It eventually morphed into a soap about their ridiculously complex personal lives, extending to regular corruption and perjury, several rapes and assaults, the cop shop being burnt down/blown up two or three times, and a ludicrous number of cops getting murdered, usually by each other. When you think that one police death usually makes national headlines, you have to wonder why no-one noticed that Sun Hill was a total death trap for serving police officers.

It was made in Merton just off the Phipp's Bridge Estate.

Nobody would have noticed.

Yes! This is the sort of thing I mean! The current show was really interesting and then started focusing on darker storylines that didn't add up to the earlier characters, their habits and mannerisms have gone weird and it's all a bit of a parody.

I was concerned about spoilers today, so i have now binged and finished Lucifer. I did not think it went weird at all. It is a show about the devil and angels. You expect weird. But I am a Theologian so it is already my kind of show.

i loved oitnb beginning to

i also really enjoyed the final season of once upon a time, which i know annoyed a lot of people. I liked that it was different. Perhaps they should have marketed it as a spin off.

HIMYM was great. But watch the alternative ending. Much better

Jumped the Shark. From Happy Days - Fonz went water-skiing, jumped over the shark, and everyone went WTF was that?

Slight aside but did anyone else think the Fonz was an a*hole and not cool or was it just me?
