Shows that go stupid

So I've become addicted to Lie To Me. Started brilliant, ended up fucking ridiculous. I can see why season 4 didn't happen.
Like the mentalist - loved it, cried when he found Red John and killed him in the cafe. But no! They had to carry on and rewrite that.

This is why Ricky Gervais is so amazing at what he does. Two incredible short series' of The Office and then finish. The most successful sitcom ever, they could have continued for ages but they are humble enough to know when to leave it as a masterpiece.

I cannot stand Gervais, so have not seen the office but he didn't invent doing 2 short series.

The Young Ones
Faulty Towers

I'm sure a few others.

Definitely Lost.

At the end of every episode you would think that at least something interesting would be revealed in the next one to try and piece thjngs together a bit, but the plot just kept thickening further and in the end I just got bored. I didn't make it anywhere near to the end!

Heroes (WHO?!) started out really good and went a bit crap.

To be fair to Heroes, it was shafted by the writer's strike. Never recovered.

@sashh never said he invented it. These days writers will squeeze every last ounce out of a concept for the money and it's pretty normal to have endless boring series' as the writers sell out.

Imogensmumma · 10/12/2022 05:38

Blacklist

How I met your mother - especially the last season and ending, that was torturous

notprincehamlet · 10/12/2022 05:47

Will & Grace - even before the reboot

Oh I've got one.
True Blood!
still watched it all but ffs.

Have you read the books? (Don’t, they are wank). But they did the same. Honestly, fucking fairies?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/12/2022 05:57

The Young Ones
Faulty Towers

but there was only two series of tyo (Think they knew it had run out of steam, so just pissed about) And there were only 12 Fawlty Towers. All excellent.

I thought Killing Eve absolutely plummeted in quality, after season one, when the show's writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge left. Instead of being able to lose myself in the delicious bonkerness of it all, I ended up hate-watching and getting cross that it was trying too hard. And then, eventually, straight up not watching. Such a shame.

I agree. That was a two series show at most.

abblie · 10/12/2022 06:26

Hollyoaks
Eastenders
Emmerdale
Coronation street

marvellousmaple · 10/12/2022 06:36

Completely agree with OINTNB and Killing Eve. I loved each if them until the last series and then just gave up. OINTB should have finished with the women running into the water. Killing Eve should have ended with her dead. Such fab shows otherwise.

exLtEveDallas · 10/12/2022 06:47

The Arrow and The Flash both were great until they started doing love scenes, crossovers and alternate universes. Was gutted about Arrow - its dark storyline gave me an excuse to drool all over Stephen Amell, but then came Season 4 and it turned into a teatime kids show.

RightsHoarder · 10/12/2022 06:49

What was that David Tenant vicar kidnap series? That got so so daft so quickly.

SoSobored · 10/12/2022 06:49

How to get away with murder for me. So sad because Viola Davis is such an amazing actress but I think in the end it was like a soap opera the plot was so stupid!

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/12/2022 06:52

Lol at Faulty Towers! Hope that's auto correct.

I feel I need to watch the Fringe, think it's the only one I haven't watched

Jumping the Shark (from Happy Days when Fonz had to jump a shark)

New Amsterdam- the second series was bad enough but the most recent is just utterly ridiculous.

Greys is dire - should have stopped 5 series ago/ can somebody please kill off bloody Owen Hunt!

The problem with American series is they just don't know when to stop!

New Amsterdam was super twee. I went with it and enjoyed it 😁

alpenguin · 10/12/2022 07:37

Handmaids tale.

Blocked · 10/12/2022 07:51

Stranger Things changed from atmospheric and spooky to full on horror movie with teen romance undertones.

Lolacat1234 · 10/12/2022 08:11

Prison break!!! First series excellent then they just kept getting locked up in different prisons all over the world and I gave up. I can either watch complete fantasy and suspend my disbelief completely like buffy, walking dead, true blood or GOT, but if something is portraying real life to me it has to be slightly realistic or I just spend the whole series going THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN!!!!! I mean a certain amount of artistic license is fine but when it just goes totally ridiculous I can't continue. That series with Idris Elba where he is a detective is also another one forgot the name of it.

Yes, that was the point. They knew when to stop.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 10/12/2022 08:22

Pretty Little Liars, The Vampire Diaries, just the same storylines over and over again. I’d argue that Game of Thrones didn’t go on for too long, it didn’t go on long enough because the last series was rushed and the ending was shit.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/12/2022 08:28

Kanaloa · 09/12/2022 22:18

Oh yes! I loved the first, liked the second, then felt it went a bit blah. The problem was (with the show being called Prison Break) they had to keep trying to get him back into prisons. At the end of season 5 he’s broke out of about 10 prisons! But it starts to just feel daft. And in the first there were loads of twists and turns and he did clever tricks to get out, plus there’s an element of believability because he had access to the blueprints through his workplace and a whole year to plan and prepare! By the later ones he’s just escaping random prisons in really unbelievable ways.

Sounds like the start of a series based upon the multiple escapes that led to the men involved in The Great Escape being put into Stalag Luft III.

Actually, that could be an idea...

Hancox432 · 10/12/2022 08:32

First 2 seasons of LOST were incredible. Then went massively downhill.

bestbefore · 10/12/2022 08:35

New Amsterdam - it's got so strange...
And manifest for sure.
