Damn Dog Shit.

DuckWalkedUpToALemonadeStand · 29/11/2022 19:47

Yet another 20 minutes of my life scraping dog shit off my kids' shoes. Was dark, couldn't see the path, suddenly noticed the stench, there it is.

This is all too commonplace.
What can we do about it?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I spend my life shouting MIND THAT DOG POO at my children.

Same. Just too dark tonight, none of us saw it.

I am sooooo pissed off.
Feel nauseous. It was exceptionally repulsive and loads of it. Mushy.

I'm not just ranting though. I really think we are overdue some sort of solution.

I’m a dog owner who picks up poo!

A lot of people mention dog poo on my local Facebook page but it doesn’t really help…. I do agree, it’s unacceptable.

lfYouLikePInaColadas · 29/11/2022 20:30

Same shite, different day. Sick of it too.

I want dog licences brought back but MUCH MUCH more expensive than they were. It needs to fund dog wardens, and a dna database of dogs, matching up the shit every time it’s spotted, owners HEAVILY fined, dog taken away after first warning. I really don’t think this is unreasonable. Why should we have to deal with dog shit? Ideally, I don’t even want dogs shitting in public: want a dog, train it to shit in your own back yard.
if we can stop them pissing all over where we walk too, that would be great. In which decent nation do we find letting millions of dogs piss on our streets. Gross.

Thanks for picking up. Must be the minority though.

I think the Facebook posts do help actually. They make others aware that it is socially unacceptable.
With the notable exception of assistance and working dogs, in this time of climate emergency no one should be getting dogs anyway - they have an high carbon paw print and are a luxury the planet just cannot afford.

FourChimneys · 29/11/2022 22:50

All dogs should have their dna registered. All dog poo checked. Massive fines to pay for this.

Having to fork out £1000 for the first offence, more for the second, might make people think twice.

And please don't bleat on about how that is unfair. Have a dog if you must, take responsibility or pay the fine.

£1000 per year per dog. Fine of £10k for first shit. If it's runny and you can't pick it up, you stay put whilst calling a dog shit cleaning service at great cost to yourself.
Seriously so hacked off right now.

Teen DD stepped in some today. Luckily her school shoes don't have a grippy sole so it didn't take too long to clean them.
I hate scummy people who don't pick up. I spent months reporting an elderly neighbour and I think they have finally been bollocked for it.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 30/11/2022 00:21

So are you going to all go round collecting samples to send off for analysis?

Dna testing can't be done without the goods.

The goods get tested once a dog is purchased. Owner pays. Or dog dna taken. Kept on database, funded by dog licences. Dog wardens employed on decent salary to patrol. They get bonuses for every shit they find.

I also want the license to pay for vehicular water road sweeping machines, which drive around roads and pavements, paying special attention to lampposts. Every night or early hours, cleaning our streets ready for the day ahead. I can’t stand the idea of walking around on dog piss. We are a shoes off at the door household but even so, there’s still dog shit and dog piss on our shoes in the hall, which we then step on once our shoes are off and traipse it in to our home.

Lucky. My kid was in trainers. It had gone up into the fabric side section too, as well as in all the treads.

No one notices the dog shit that actually is picked up - the vast majority of it is as far as I can tell.

I've lived in a variety of areas over the last decade or so - all urban, and a mixture of deprived to not-so-deprived. I also have a dog, so frequently find myself in places where dogs and their owners congregate. However, I don't often see dog poo that hasn't been picked up - it's something I see perhaps once or twice a week, so really not a huge issue.

I do have a theory that people will always find something to moan about in their neighbourhood on NextDoor and Facebook. In the neighbourhoods where there are genuine socioeconomic issues, people have a moan about those, and dog turds are a really low priority because there's much bigger issues. In areas where the council is a bit shit, or there's flytipping galore, they moan about that, and dog turds are a really low priority because there's much bigger issues. In areas where things are mostly ticketyboo, but they still want to moan about something, dog turds are always something people can moan about.

My neighbourhood is notably deprived, and people are worried about a recent spate of thefts from cars and burglaries and never mention dog turds. The village I grew up in is safe enough that you could leave your front door unlocked while you go to the shop and buy milk; people are perpetually moaning about dog turds.

The Elephant-Index-Of-Nice-Neighbourhoods suggests that there's a correlation between nice neighbourhoods and the amount of moaning about dog shit.

I feel so lucky to live in a nice area, makes me so happy whilst scraping someone's dog's shit off my son's trainers.

Oh and I do notice when dog people are swinging their little bag of dog shit around, and I think they look like suckers. Still, better than leaving a big steaming pile, but there'll still be traces of shit left behind.

What I really want is for it to be socially unacceptable/illegal for dogs to shit in public. You want a dog, train it to shit in your own garden. Or put a nappy on it.

We don't go around shitting in the street. Even if we scooped it up, it would be a disgusting thing to do. Yet we're complacent about dogs doing it.

The DNA testing of dog poo has actually been implemented in Tel Aviv!

Tbh in the city which implemented DNA testing for dogs (Tel aviv) , hardly anyone has gardens so I suppose the dogs have to poo in the streets. But owners would be fined if they don't pick it up.

Then they can poo in their house. Their choice to own a dog, their choice to deal with dog shit. Not fair on the rest of us.

This is the most ridiculous thread I've ever read! Talk about first world problems 🤣 you must be in total bonkers land thinking DNA testing on dog turds would ever be a reality. And stopping dogs from doing their business in public 🤣 are you going to start rounding up cats and foxes too, get them all together in the town hall and lecture them on proper defecating etiquette 🤣

It does boggle my mind why people don't pick up after their dogs (I think some people don't like the idea of handling it, others 'conveniently' don't notice, others think it biodegrades I guess?!) I'm along one of the dog owners who cheerfully holds onto my bag of shit, much preferable to the latter option as much as you may mock me lol

Nat6999 · 30/11/2022 00:56

All dog food should have something added to make the poo glow in the dark. I can remember shouting "mind that" about 100 times a day when me & my brother were out & about.

Agree... I think most dog owners pick up but obviously even that isn't good enough for OP
