Haven’t been charged for a jumper

I went to TK Maxx this morning and took 4 jumpers and a candle up to the till.

I’ve checked the receipt when I’ve got home and haven’t been charged for one of the jumpers. Do I need to go back?

It was the cheapest jumper I picked up costing £8 - if it was one of the others I would have gone straight back but for £8 I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

I definitely took it to the till because the woman serving commented on it being a cute jumper. So for not being my fault do I need to fix it?

💀Mumsnet will tell you that you committed a terrible crime and that you should drive half the country to rectify it.
It isn't good as stolen FFS.
It was the fault of the cashier and an easy mistake of theirs.
Yes, take it back if it's convenient to do soor you're going that way again or at the most ring the store and tell them (they'll probably be surprised)
You didn't realise in store and it wasn't your mistake.

witchesbubblebath · 26/11/2022 19:16

These businesses would not expect you to spend money on fuel or public transport and/or parking fees to return a mistake you didn't make.
If you realised in store that you had been undercharged, then that might be different, but even then it wouldn't be your error.
NB I'm not blaming the cashier, these mistakes happen all the time.

witchesbubblebath · 26/11/2022 19:24

I once walked out of Boots with an eye cream in my hand by accident.
When I was walking out, I saw a security guard and profusely apologised and told him my mistake.
He's said it was OK and that most people would have not have said anything.
Walking out with it was MY error although it was a mistake. AND I realised at the time.
If I had walked out with it and not realised until later, I would have returned it paying travel expenses if I had to because I had taken it and it wouldn't have been a fault of the store. That is when you apologise and go back with an item.

I work for a large retailer (and previously. I can guarantee they will not be bothered one bit and would be very surprised if you tried to come back and pay! Look at it this way - if you complain about anything these days, they usually give you goodwill vouchers for £10, £15 etc - these sort of costs are small fry to a large company. Not to mention the insane mark up on clothes - that jumper probably cost them about £4 to buy! (We used to sell old stock to TK max)

rattlinbog · 26/11/2022 20:07

Omg I definitely wouldn't go back. I'm amazed so many would!

CeriB82 · 26/11/2022 20:12

Id stay quiet.

Angelofthenortheast · 26/11/2022 20:14

I was at Tesco last night when a guy inexplicably jogged out the store with a giant smart TV, past the guard and three staff! I overheard them all saying "at the end of the day, he probably needed that more than tescos did".

Don't sweat it, £8 is such small fry to tk maxx

thelobsterquadrille · 26/11/2022 20:15

I wouldn't go back.

Kitcaterpillar · 26/11/2022 20:16

DD recently walked 20 minutes back to McDonalds when she realised they had missed charging her for a milkshake.

I would be absolutely baffled if anyone I knew did this. This isn't honesty, this is woefully undervaluing your own time and energy to give 20p to a billion dollar corporation. Mad.

TulipCat · 26/11/2022 20:29

I would definitely have pointed it out had I noticed at the till, but wouldn't go back later. I barely have the time and inclination to return things I have paid for, let alone stuff I haven't!

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/11/2022 20:34

I def wouldn’t go back but would email them. Bloom & wild delivery said package had been returned to sender due to invalid address.

I mailed them and it and the missing parcel turned up with the replacement next day, delivered by same postie.. I mailed them back to tell them and they said enjoy the extra flowers

I’m really confused about the missed charge for the milkshake. Had did they end up with it in the order if not paid for? I’ve had a missing item, again I mailed and got a free meal next visit

Probably cost you that much to go back into town and park etc. Keep it. It could have been an offer you missed like 3 for 2?

Cookerdog · 26/11/2022 21:18

So for not being my fault do I need to fix it?

You have a moral dilemma or you would not have asked the question. Two outcomes that I can think of that would resolve your dilemma:

  1. You entered into an agreement with the retailer when you put the jumper on the counter to pay the £8 to own it. So go back to the store, explain the situation and pay the £8.
  2. You decide the retailer is a large corporate entity and will not miss the £8, but you are still compromised, so give the £8 to a charity to make you feel better.

The problem is that 2 is incomplete because it is really for the retailer to make that decision. The £8 belongs to the retailer.

People really undervalue their time

Furries · 27/11/2022 01:31

There’s no way I’d be wasting my time, or travel costs, to go back to the store.

However, I would be phoning them to explain and to offer payment. It’s highly likely that that they’ll say thanks, but just keep it.

Yes, i know I’m weird/a mug/whatever. But it’s the way my brain works and it just wouldn’t sit right with me/would bug me.

I never cease to be disappointed by the innate dishonesty that these threads throw up

The shop made a mistake, now OP has to go out of her way to rectify it, otherwise she's dishonest? Are her time and petrol worth less or more than £8?
And I say that as a supplier, it's funny but customers sometime tell us they didn't receive an item, but the person who did received it as extra, we never hear from, not once. Well, it's our mistake, we should do better.
It's a genuine mistake from the cashier, not a dishonest intent from OP. Chill.

I was like you and did that once; first I spent a good old long time getting hold of someone, and then they laughed at me. Well, if they don't care, I won't then, when it happens again.

And by the way, no one ever has been overcharged by a shop and let it be because it wasn't worth the bother?🤔

Furries · 27/11/2022 02:04

@prawncocktailwithdill - if I was overcharged, I’d be pissed off at the thought of the bother of time/travel costs. So I’d still phone them (and then likely email my receipt as proof).

prawncocktailwithdill · 27/11/2022 02:37

@Furries and probably you'd have more success than me trying to pay for something I wasn't charged for 😀

Orchidflower1 · 27/11/2022 05:38

Honestly @EatingCoats I probably wouldn’t go back. However, I would donate the cost of the jumper online to a charity eg £8 to nspcc.

I once had a Marks and Sparks order with an extra pair of leggings in ( clearly the packer picked up extra by mistake) and I donated the cost to MIND.
