Haven’t been charged for a jumper

I went to TK Maxx this morning and took 4 jumpers and a candle up to the till.

I’ve checked the receipt when I’ve got home and haven’t been charged for one of the jumpers. Do I need to go back?

It was the cheapest jumper I picked up costing £8 - if it was one of the others I would have gone straight back but for £8 I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

I definitely took it to the till because the woman serving commented on it being a cute jumper. So for not being my fault do I need to fix it?

I wouldn’t take it back and if you phoned them I’d be concerned for your state of mind.

Being so passive will not serve you well in life. If it was a small business then I probably would pay them the £8 but big companies don’t exactly behave in an ethical manner do they? Capitalism cares nothing for you.

thepetrellies · 26/11/2022 14:08

If I notice being undercharged at the till. I will always point it out to the person serving. If, however, I don't notice until I leave the shop, I'm guided by the store's own policy. In any shop that has a notice to the effect that mistakes cannot be rectified later, I don't go back. Their policy is not to correct mistakes after the shopper leaves, so that should apply for under as well as overcharging. What's sauce for the goose....

What is TK Maxx's policy in this regard?

I never cease to be disappointed by the innate dishonesty that these threads throw up

Oh come on. It’s TKMaxx, not a local shop. It was a genuine mistake.

ItsBritneyBitch45 · 26/11/2022 14:13

I’d happily keep it. One time I bought plastic cups from the big Sainsbury’s near my mum’s house for £2.50. When I got home I realised that two separate packs were stacked up to look like one big one. When I had scanned it at the self checkout, it didn’t pick up the extra weight and didn’t alert me. So I should have paid £5 but only paid £2.50. They’re still in my cupboards now. No way was I going allll the way back for £2.50

Life must be very wearying for you.

I ordered some clothing from M&S during lockdown. One item was delayed and when it arrived I found a pair of mens jeans included in the box.
I couldn’t find a returns code to send them bac, M&S didn’t appear to be answering telephone calls so I kept them.
They were my husbands size too. He’s wearing them now.

I used to work in a clothes shop. A mistake like that would have been taken out of my wages.

What company was that and how long ago?

anastasiakrupnik · 26/11/2022 14:20

I'm comparatively honest about these things BUT consider how much going back to the shop would cost you.

For me it would be half that cost again in bus fare, or the whole cost in tube fare, plus my precious time, to fix a mistake that I didn't make. I think this is a mistake that they should pay for, not you.

I would email them

I would do this, I recently received a delivery twice, emailed the company and they said I could keep the extra item.

Same here! Lockdown deliveries were nuts. I ordered one pair of jeans from John Lewis but someone packed 6 - probably the whole stack of jeans that they had in that size.

I returned 5 pairs with a note to explain (friends thought I was nuts) but inevitably they processed it as a return so the pair that I had kept were now free.

I gave up at that point.

Wisdomteetharenotwise · 26/11/2022 14:29

I placed an order online with Boots and they sent me two of an item instead of one, contacted them and they said I could keep the extra item. They might just let you keep for free for your honesty 😊

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/11/2022 14:29

I would leave it and keep it.

MajesticElephant · 26/11/2022 14:30

I have another weird M&S one. I ordered some pjs during lock down and included in my package was a cashmere jumper in my size! I checked the invoice and then emailed them but they never replies so now I wear it regularly!

TheProblemIsMe · 26/11/2022 14:31

Enjoy the jumper

Doingmybest12 · 26/11/2022 14:34

I consider myself pretty honest. If I have been through the tills, handed over all the goods and they've made a mistake then no I wouldn't go back if I later discovered this at home.

PurpleButterflyWings · 26/11/2022 14:40

I am normally in the 'but this is steeeeeeeealing' corner on threads like this, but with this case, I would just keep it @EatingCoats Not your fault they didn't take for it.

Although you should really have noticed at the checkout that the bill was a bit lower than it should have been, coz you would have known the prices of each item and roughly what the total would have been... It was only 4 jumpers and a candle... so are you SURE you didn't realise or suspect something, and now you're home you're feeling guilty? Wink

Whiskyvodka · 26/11/2022 14:41

I bought an expensive bikini from M&S along with other items.
When I paid I thought it was a little less than I had expected but assumed it was correct as everything had been presented at the till.
Got home and checked receipt and only the top half of the bikini had been charged for although they were separates.
I didn't go back and I'm so glad because not long after I bought teabags from the local M&S food and the bags weren't sealed so i got a box of tea leaves and empty tea bags.
When I returned them the assistant tried to count the empty bags and said some were missing.
I told her yes they're in my bin after I swept the mess off my floor.
She was a complete arse. Didn't want to refund.
I wouldn't think twice now about shafting M& S they're customer service is shocking.

Whiskyvodka · 26/11/2022 14:42

their

Citycentre3 · 26/11/2022 14:42

Are you older? My Mum would be the sort of person that would worry about this sort of thing.

I don't think the police will be banging your door anytime soon. Enjoy the freebie

mummyh2016 · 26/11/2022 14:44

I know people who work in one of the distribution centres; the amount of thieving going on there is rife. They will not be bothered about an £8 jumper and neither should you be.

Amtheyest17 · 26/11/2022 14:47

£8 or £800 I wouldn’t go back (unless it was a small business/independent store) but maybe I’m dishonest. I’m ok with that though in this context 😂

roses2 · 26/11/2022 14:49

Take it back, say it was a gift and get a credit note.

TrixJax · 26/11/2022 14:49

I wouldn't go back. Why would I spend £4 return of my money on bus fare for their mistake🤷🏼‍♀️
Just keep it

VladmirsPoutine · 26/11/2022 14:51

Some people would move heaven and earth to rectify the mistake. I personally wouldn't. The cost alone for me to go back would surpass £8 and it's not as though you tried to avoid paying. Just leave it.
