Haven’t been charged for a jumper

EatingCoats · 26/11/2022 12:58

I went to TK Maxx this morning and took 4 jumpers and a candle up to the till.

I’ve checked the receipt when I’ve got home and haven’t been charged for one of the jumpers. Do I need to go back?

It was the cheapest jumper I picked up costing £8 - if it was one of the others I would have gone straight back but for £8 I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

I definitely took it to the till because the woman serving commented on it being a cute jumper. So for not being my fault do I need to fix it?

This happened to me a couple of years ago (not in TK MAXX). I hadn't been charged for a £22 item. I realised when I got home and rang them up. The person I spoke to couldn't understand what I meant and thought I was saying I'd been overcharged. He passed me on to.the manager, who was lovely, and told me I didn't have to pay for the item.

It might be just me, but I couldn't have kept it without contacting the shop. I'd feel too guilty

bpirockin · 26/11/2022 15:39

This is the sort of situation where you know the "right" thing to do, but sometimes circumstances conspire and you do something else. When I've had that happen and made the wrong choice, I end up beating myself up and being convinced that it's the reason why I don't win the lottery etc etc. I know it's irrational, but for the sake of £8, I'd rather not have the 'guilt cloud' hanging over my head.

resipsa · 26/11/2022 15:40

Good luck! I have received unordered items from various retailers with other online deliveries. Most say keep it 🤷‍♀️. Took an expensive bed set back to J Lewis once, explained it had not been ordered and I just wanted to give it back. The assistant kept asking to see the receipt to process the refund. I didn't want a refund, obviously. Round in circles. They had to call a manager in the end and it took about 20 mins to return the thing I had never ordered!

Feef83 · 26/11/2022 15:40

I doubt CEO would want the OP to return at this time of year.

Adds to queue
Takes up a parking space
and if tag does go off on entry (they can be temperamental), then takes up security time
All for £8

cherry2727 · 26/11/2022 15:41

Op I've had this happen to me with marks and Spencers via online orders! Every ordered item seem to be duplicated and delivered to me however I'd only get charged once ! It was soo bizarre as it happened on several occasions! Some items were actually quite pricey too! The first time it happened I returned the product to one of their large branches and the manager didn't have a clue what to do with the product- she was very confused ! The second time I rang customer service and was told to keep the item . I just kept all duplicates after that and I think the issue got sorted about a year later ! Was just soo random and weird !!

Megifer · 26/11/2022 15:42

Call and make a payment over the phone to a store not designed to take such payments? No thanks!!

I'd keep the jumper no hesitation, would probably keep me warmer knowing it was free 🤣

Same here! Lockdown deliveries were nuts. I ordered one pair of jeans from John Lewis but someone packed 6 - probably the whole stack of jeans that they had in that size.

I returned 5 pairs with a note to explain (friends thought I was nuts) but inevitably they processed it as a return so the pair that I had kept were now free.

I gave up at that point.

I had similar with OCADO - ordered 1 book of 12*1st class stamps - they arrive stapled to a piece of paper. But I had been sent 6 books - all stapled separately to separate bits of paper. So 6 had been picked deliberately.

I phoned to return. Ocado were so pleased but getting the items picked up next time round was quite tricky. The delivery driver didnt have the instructions, had to phone the warehouse, we had to all sign bits of paper. Clearly normally OCADO just say to keep the items, but this was too much money.

Small /independent business Yes. Multi international company No.

I was given 3 wrong shopping bags from Ocado with my delivery. Full of food!

I rang. They said they would collect that day. I said - no, I’m heading out now, they said - ok keep it. £72 worth of stuff!

Yeah but what if everyone thinks that.

Then they need to train their checkout staff to take more care when they're scanning. This is really a shop-initiated issue - if OP had noticed at the time and said nothing, it'd be a bit Hmm, but she didn't.

It's just her good fortune that the mistake was in her favour this time, instead of all those times something scans twice and you don't realise until you look at the receipt hours later.

I had an item scan twice in TK Maxx. I called the store and was asked to return into store at my convenience. The duty manager then had to find and watch the video of the transaction while I waited. She could see clearly what I had bought, and saw the double scan. I was refunded, but it took time.

Thanks for all the replies.

I didn’t notice it hadn’t been charged because I’d picked up a jumper for £25 and then found the same one in the clearance section which had been reduced so I swapped that and was expecting the cost to be lower than I’d originally thought anyway.

I was thinking the cost of going back to
the shop wouldn’t be worth it for £8 but I might phone them just to ease my conscience!

Why clog up the phone lines and waste your own time and the time of who ever has to deal with you? You are obviously a virtuous person OP, you do not have to prove it.

RoyKeaneisRight · 26/11/2022 15:48

I'll be honest, not fake virtuous- I'd keep it and say nothing.

What does “fake virtuous” look like in this situation?

londonmummy1966 · 26/11/2022 15:50

I had this with John Lewis once. I'd bought quite a lot of stuff and sent it to customer collections. WHen I picked it up at the end of the day they gav e me an extra bag that I didn't spot until I got home. It had about £100 of lovely children's clothes in. I emailed them and suggested they got one of their delivery vans to pick it up from me (alwysa delivering round here) and they siad it was far too complicated and to just keep the stuff. Once my dds had outgrown the clothes they were never as well dressed again

Mammyloveswine · 26/11/2022 15:51

IreneJones · 26/11/2022 13:03

Of course you should go back! It doesn't matter if it's £8 or £80. If you keep it when you know you haven't paid for it you've as good as stolen it. If it's inconvenient to go back then call the store and they can take payment over the phone.

Oh ffs

AnnaKorine · 26/11/2022 15:51

I’m scrupulously honest, but in this case I wouldn’t go back or email etc. It’s their mistake, their was no dishonesty on your part it would cost me more that 8 pounds of my own time to rectify their mistake. If I had accidentally walked out with them in my hand then the onus is on me to rectify. If it was a really expensive item then I would probably email them but I wouldn’t bother for 8 quid.

I used to work in a clothes shop. A mistake like that would have been taken out of my wages.

How would they even know it was missing? And who to blame, as there would be absolutely no record on it? I worked in M&S and the shrinkage line was massive - stock goes missing, is stolen etc all the time.

abblie · 26/11/2022 15:52

Love a freebie

Tripsabroad · 26/11/2022 15:53

I would ring up and try to pay because my conscience and belief that I'm an honest person is worth much more than £8.

Wow. People like you actually exist?!

LadyLolaRuben · 26/11/2022 15:54

You took all the items to the till and paid the bill. You've done nothing wrong. I wouldn't lose any sleep or be going back. Shops allow for damaged and missing goods, mistakes etc in the mark up of their prices

How would they know it was you that made the mistake? The jumper clearly hasn't been scanned.

How do they know who who made the mistake tho, for all they know someone has purposely come in and stolen it.

AdoraBell · 26/11/2022 15:59

I suggest phoning them too.
