Haven’t been charged for a jumper

I went to TK Maxx this morning and took 4 jumpers and a candle up to the till.

I’ve checked the receipt when I’ve got home and haven’t been charged for one of the jumpers. Do I need to go back?

It was the cheapest jumper I picked up costing £8 - if it was one of the others I would have gone straight back but for £8 I don’t know if it’s worth the hassle.

I definitely took it to the till because the woman serving commented on it being a cute jumper. So for not being my fault do I need to fix it?

I would keep it, if it was a small shop I would say take it back but a big chain and for only £8 I would keep.

Are you older? My Mum would be the sort of person that would worry about this sort of thing.

I don't think the police will be banging your door anytime soon. Enjoy the freebie

My dm too.
When my dn was born dm was in Mothercare and paid for everything only to realise at home that as the nappies had a handle like a shopping bag she'd forgotten to put them on the till.
She made a 40 minute journey back next day to explain and pay.

@Whiskyvodka I once bought a (fairly expensive) jumper from M&S which bobbled over the hip area every time I wore a coat over it. I'd pick the fluffy bobbles off and it would be ok until I wore with a coat again.
So after a couple of months I took it back and explained the problem. The woman at customer services said "Ah yes, it will be your coat rubbing as you walk. The jumper's not really designed to be worn with a coat"
Selling it in Scotland. In winter🤷🏼‍♀️

My sister once ordered one of those outdoor inflatable Santa's for her house. When the box arrived there was not one but 6 of them!!!!! So we all got one bad now have matching Santa's on our lawn every year.

Mammajay · 26/11/2022 15:05

If you go back the assistant will be in trouble

I used to work in a clothes shop. A mistake like that would have been taken out of my wages.

How would anyone know when it didn’t go through the till? She didn’t give her the wrong change or ring it through and not charge her. And it would be an illegal deduction from wages.

MrsHMarsh · 26/11/2022 15:10

Ugh I had this happen once but I just felt too guilty and went back and paid, the guy was laughing at me and took 20% off because he said he was surprised I came back!!

Of course you should go back! It doesn't matter if it's £8 or £80. If you keep it when you know you haven't paid for it you've as good as stolen it. If it's inconvenient to go back then call the store and they can take payment over the phone.

Several times I have bought items fromTKMaxx only to discover at home that they were 'seconds' - items ditched for discount sale because of manufacturing imperfections. But their stuff is never ever marketed as seconds.
I've started to thnk that they know that items like this are in their supply chain (regardless of whether or not they intentionally buy them) and they don't care. They just count on people not noticiing and then not bothering to return them when they spot the flaw.
They also rely on the illusion that all of their stuff is bargainously discounted stock from classy brands. When in fact many of the 'brands' they sell are just their own mid-to-low range lines with a variety of fancy invented brand names.

My point being that major retailers are endlessly looking for one or another way of getting one over on their customers. That's how they turn a profit.. So if, accidentally, one of their customers gets one over them for a change , that's only fair.
I certainly wouldn't return the jumper, especially as in this case (as another poster said), the shop wouldn't be able to penalise an employee because they wouldn't know which employee made the mistake. Possibly they wouldn't even notice an item was missing, in all the jumble sale chaos of their stores.

Ihaveamagicwand · 26/11/2022 15:14

Moral dilemma!

Would you go back or phone them if they’d charged you twice? A clear case of do as you would be done by here I think.

If you decide you wouldn’t want to bother, fine enjoy your free jumper. If you would want a refund, phone them and tell them what has happened and see whether they want you to pay over the phone.

I wouldn’t offer to go in though but that’s probably because my nearest T K Maxx is about 30miles away!!

PinkSyCo · 26/11/2022 15:16

No way would I spend time and petrol money bringing something, that I’d acquired for free through no fault of my own, back!

EatingCoats · 26/11/2022 15:16

Thanks for all the replies.

I didn’t notice it hadn’t been charged because I’d picked up a jumper for £25 and then found the same one in the clearance section which had been reduced so I swapped that and was expecting the cost to be lower than I’d originally thought anyway.

I was thinking the cost of going back to
the shop wouldn’t be worth it for £8 but I might phone them just to ease my conscience!

Dishonesty??? OP didn't shove it up her jumper. She took it to the till and it was on them to scan it.

I'd honestly not bother taking it back. £8 is nothing relative to their sales this weekend.

mynameischloe · 26/11/2022 15:18

I absolutely wouldn't bother. Enjoy your jumper, OP!

Ponderingwindow · 26/11/2022 15:18

I honestly wouldn’t go back. I’ve made it home before and discovered I haven’t been charged for a small item. It’s happened a few times over many years. It doesn’t even begin to compensate for the times I’ve been overcharged or an item I paid for hasn’t made it into my bags.

if it were a small shop or one I don’t shop at constantly, I would go back, but a large store I shop at all the time, I figure it balances out over the years.

georgarina · 26/11/2022 15:19

No way would I go back! It's their mistake. I've worked as a cashier, it will be chalked up to loss. TK Maxx will survive.

Tansytea · 26/11/2022 15:19

You didn't notice at the time, prices in TK Maxx aren't always the clearest, I'm a bit unsure what I'd do in this situation. I would definitely weigh up how much it would cost for me to go back, for me, the bottom line is their mistake shouldn't cost you more money than the jumper is worth, or even close. That said, if I regularly went or it was within walking distance, I'd probably go back just because I'd never enjoy the jumper. I honestly don't see how they could put it through the till if you rang up. It's not a small business, where they might remember you, you're just a nameless customer who they won't remember:

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 26/11/2022 15:21

Freebie.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 26/11/2022 15:23

It wouldn't occur to me to go back. I'd just keep it

Yeah but what if everyone thinks that.

I think almost everyone does think that. And TKMaxx lives on.

MrsHMarsh · 26/11/2022 15:24

Yeah but what if everyone thinks that.

TK Maxx would improve their training presumably

FloresApparuerunt · 26/11/2022 15:30

Yeah but what if everyone thinks that.

Then they need to train their checkout staff to take more care when they're scanning. This is really a shop-initiated issue - if OP had noticed at the time and said nothing, it'd be a bit Hmm, but she didn't.

It's just her good fortune that the mistake was in her favour this time, instead of all those times something scans twice and you don't realise until you look at the receipt hours later.

Foolsandtheirmoney · 26/11/2022 15:32

I picked up a hoodie while doing some shopping in tesco a while ago. She took the security tag off and put it in a paper bag. I paid for my shopping and left. When I got home I realised I hadn't been charged for it. It was about €15. I did nothing. My nearest Tesco is 40mins away, I don't usually go but had a hospital appointment nearby on that occasion. I wouldn't be back that way for ages so I wasn't going to spend €15 on petrol just to rectify their mistake.

boboshmobo · 26/11/2022 15:34

This happens all the time in my shop , they staff member just missed scanning it . I really wouldn't worry . At sale time people try to return things and they haven't been sold in the first place . Makes me laugh when they get cross they can't get a refund ! 🙄🙄 .. I tell them to leave quickly because we can't do anything about it . Like tk Maxx we have so much stock and such a quick turnaround it won't be noticed until the next audit !
