How long do you kept birthday cards on display?

Totally trivial I know! Not sure how it cropped up in conversation last night with a group of friends, but somehow we ended up talking about how long we keep birthday cards on display.
One person said they look at them and put them straight in recycling; one puts them up but takes them down the day after their birthday. The rest between 'a few days' and a week.
As said, appreciate it's really not important but am weirdly intrigued!

One week to the day here.

rainbowstardrops · 26/11/2022 08:42

I keep ours up for 2 weeks. If someone has taken the time to be thoughtful enough to give/send me a card then I want to appreciate them.

I couldn't imagine reading them and binning them straight away. If I knew anyone in RL who does this, I'd rather they tell me not to bother.

I find cards pointless unless made by my children. I keep those forever and chuck the other ones pretty much straight away.

It would be better if you let your friends/family know you think cards are pointless, save them wasting the time and money. They could just text you birthday greetings instead?

Oh they know! I've managed to get it down to about 5 outside my kids. I only get cards for a few people that absolutely love them as find it all such a waste of paper and money. Much prefer a hug and a cup of tea

Dogsgottabone · 26/11/2022 08:51

We generally only get a couple each. Parents and each other and on occasion a friend buys me one.

Mine go on the kitchen work top for a day and then away straight away, either in the bin or in a drawer until I put them in a bin at a later date.

DHs go on his desk for a few days till he takes them down.

DC don't get many cards either, just us and GPs but I try to leave those up for a few days.

We don't have a place for them, no mantelpiece. None of us are bothered by cards really.

And as previous poster says, they just add to the clutter and the mess.

Caitlin Moran wrote something about sending a book instead of a card. Only a few ££ more and so much better for everyone. Think I might start that.

TrixJax · 26/11/2022 08:53

Between 1-2 weeks

Matildahoney · 26/11/2022 08:53

2 weeks, my parents always had the 2 week rule and looking back I guess it's because their birthdays are 2 weeks apart, so same rule always applied to me.

balalake · 26/11/2022 09:18

Usually about a week.

HeatwaveToNightshade · 26/11/2022 09:31

I take mine down the next day, but keep the kids' cards up for about a week. Sometimes a couple of stragglers arrive after the day, so it's nice to have them all there. I keep a couple of the more interesting/meaningful cards.

RaininSummer · 26/11/2022 09:32

About a week. I know they are just bits of card but I wouldn't send another if I knew the recipient put them straight into the recycling.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 26/11/2022 09:32

Kids couple of days
Mine and dh that night.
The clutter makes me edgy!

Numbat2022 · 26/11/2022 09:32

At least a week. I can't believe people put them straight in the bin, how rude! 😳

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 26/11/2022 09:35

And when i say clutter we have a massive family so kids prob get 30 +cards from close friends and family. Plus party friends
I put theirs from GP etc in keepsake box.

Sometimes they cut up the others for crafts etc.

DelurkingAJ · 26/11/2022 09:36

Often until the next birthday 🫢…they’re on the Welsh dresser out of the way and I just forget about them. I keep the ones for the DC (and some of mine…I’m gutted I threw the last one my DDad ever sent me).

dementedpixie · 26/11/2022 09:36

It was my birthday on the 20th. I put my cards in the recycling yesterday.

Aria2015 · 26/11/2022 10:17

1 week for us.

howhardisittogettyres · 26/11/2022 10:25

About a week. I then keep cards from DGP in case it's the last one we ever get.
Throw the rest out. Balloons stay up until they deflate. This could be months

TinfoilTwat · 26/11/2022 10:32

Absolutely ages. We have a card string and generally it only gets cleared off when the next birthday comes along. And sometimes we just add the new birthday cards on top.

InMySpareTime · 26/11/2022 10:33

@TinfoilTwat glad there are at least two of us, I was feeling like an outlier on the thread Grin

Outdoorable · 26/11/2022 10:36

Birthday's - one week (although DH won't display ones from his family member he dislikes, the get shoved in a drawer/hidden until the week is up...not quite sure why he doesn't put them straight in the bin).
Christmas - looked at, enjoyed and then straight in the recycling bin - unless from someone we're very close to but don't get to see often.

AtSomePointInLife · 26/11/2022 10:41

1 week in our house

Doingmybest12 · 26/11/2022 10:44
