A new 'one (small) job a day' thread

ShinyHatStand · 19/11/2022 15:00

Can't find an active one of these, which I found massively motivating in the past.
The idea is to try and tackle one job around the house every day and report back. Even a really small job counts, especially if it's been irritating you for a while.

I've just sorted out the drawers in the hall that we use for shoes, bags etc. Took about 15 mins. More crap to throw away than I'd expected and I found all the gloves that had gone awol.

I binned (recycled) all of my dead pens from my office desk and organised my post it's

So satisfying now to see order there an knowledge that the pen will work first time

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 01/12/2022 14:22

Can I join in please? I did this for a while in the summer without posting and it was so useful, but I got lazy. I saw this thread yesterday, so hoping that posting will keep me more focused.
So, today's really small job was changing the water in the cut flowers I got at the weekend, and that's done, but I've also potted up the geraniums from the garden and brought them indoors for the winter. Took a bit longer to do than I thought, but I had been procrastinating, so I'm glad its out of the way. Now need to think of all the other bits and pieces I've been putting off.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 01/12/2022 14:52

Hello @Hubcapdiamondstarhalo! I'm absolutely crap at taking care of cut flowers (either feeding or binning), so nice one!

I haven't posted for a couple of days, I've not been able to get much done thanks to appointments for DS3, and discovering a terrifying amount of mould on our porch wall, behind a load of coats 😫😫 Luckily the letting agency have got onto it really quickly, but bloody hell it looks terrible, and we live in an ancient terraced house that's prone to damp.

Still, it's being sorted, so onwards and upwards!

wanttoleavenow · 01/12/2022 15:04

Oooh love this. Thanks OP.

Tuesday - defrosted the freezer and cleaned and rearranged all the drawers. Very satisfying. Took about 40 minutes before the school / work run!

Wednesday - started clearing off an old laptop to gift to youngest at Christmas - ongoing as want to put a skin on it - and add Netflix so it's all ready to go

Thursday - today - busy work at home day but will hoover and dust before the 🎄 goes up this evening.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring!!!

mum2jakie · 01/12/2022 15:10

Have thrown out an old set of drawers and run a set of storage baskets through the dishwasher to use instead

clary · 01/12/2022 18:28

Continuing my good work in the bathroom, I cleared the top of the set of drawers, mostly just putting away but still soooo much better. Also cleaned a bathroom shelf that was looking manky.

ShadowNight · 01/12/2022 22:52

I sold some old devices and cleaned the kitchen sink and hob down.

I also wrapped a birthday present that I'd made.

MintJulia · 01/12/2022 23:10

Last Saturday I spent two hours re positioning the plastic guttering along the back of the house. It had been dripping and irritating me for months.

On Sunday I got the long ladder out, went up and took the front gutter apart to work out why it kept overflowing. One of the angles had a strip of lead and a lump of mortar jammed in it, with years of muck blocking up the rest. Now it's clear.

The feeling of satisfaction is ridiculous. 😎 Now I want it to rain, just so I can see it not dripping.

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 02/12/2022 19:10

Today was derailed by car MOT shenanigans, so lots of planned stuff was not done, but just to do one small thing I managed to sort out a storage cube full of extension leads and charging cables which had turned themselves into electric spaghetti. Useful for when I'm looking for some for Christmas lights. Also remembered to order myself some flowers for Christmas week.

clary · 03/12/2022 07:37

Done a couple more jobs in the bathroom - cleaned another shelf (I mean I clean the bathroom but don't always do the extra bits) and today attacked the grot round the shower screen with a toothbrush - very satisfying!
Keep on it over the weekend all!

Lentilweaver · 03/12/2022 08:41

Failed at this over the last 3 days. I might try to do a bathroom shelf today.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 03/12/2022 08:59

Yesterday I redid the silicon around three more windows in the house. Our windows are old and crap and really need to be replaced but not enough money for that so trying to at least make sure there's no little gaps around the edges.

Today will mostly be decorating for Christmas but I might try to get the coats & shoe cupboard organised.

StewardsEnquiry · 03/12/2022 13:36

I have had a productive day. DH and I cleared up bags of leaves in the garden this morning then I had to go out and get a Santa hat for DS for school next week. I have also ordered a new mirror for the bedroom.

ShinyHatStand · 04/12/2022 11:05

Hi All.
Sorry for going awol. Had a tough few days.
Will try and get back to this today.
I feel so much better when I get some jobs done, but some days it's just so hard.

Great morning today!
Christmas decoration boxes back in garage, bed turned around to make way for bedside bassinet, and DSS's clothes sorted through to clear out too-small stuff.

Hubcapdiamondstarhalo · 04/12/2022 14:14

Yesterday's small and unplanned job was putting a new knob on the airing cupboard light pull switch, which had been missing one since I broke it in the door jamb about 18 months ago. I'd been scrabbling in the drawer of random crap for a couple of batteries and rediscovered an old brass pull from eons ago. That'll do, job done.
Actual plan for yesterday was getting tree and various bits of deco sorted till I discovered we had no bauble hooks - think I threw them out in a fit of temper last year because they were a bugger to untangle. Anyway. Now sitting here with new hooks looking at the tree in it's bag and trying to summon up the ooomph to get on with it.

clary · 04/12/2022 14:15

@ShinyHatStand it's fine to miss and get back when you can!
Today I toothbrush cleaned all the chrome in the bath - taps, plug hole and weird thing that shuts the plug down. Yucky but satisfying

Lentilweaver · 04/12/2022 14:59

Nothing done today except throw all the empty shampoo and shower gel bottles in the recycling bin. You would think someone else would think to do this but no....

ShinyHatStand · 04/12/2022 21:13

Thanks @clary. You're complete right.

I had a short but efficient blitz earlier.
Dealt with some mould that had appeared on a bedroom window.
Emptied and cleaned out all the indoor bins.
Sorted a load of packaging for recycling.
Cleared a load of crap from the main bathroom, which I never use so accumulates empty bottles etc as my teens don't seem to know where the bin is Grin

ShinyHatStand · 04/12/2022 21:14

@Lentilweaver glad it's not just me!
The bathroom had 5 shower gel bottles and about 15 toilet rolls!

Daffodils8 · 04/12/2022 21:18

I cleaned the bathrooms and listed some cat toys for free on Marketplace that went within a few hours!

I have a baby who doesn't sleep well and my partner doesn't get home from work until 7 so I've been desperate to clean those bathrooms for about 2 weeks 😬🙈. I'm so relieved they got done today haha.

Teenagelament · 04/12/2022 21:33

Replaced some tiny light bulbs and put the light fitting back together, been like that for months, thought it was broken - only took five minutes! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Lentilweaver · 06/12/2022 09:27

Yesterday's task: answer 3 non-work emails that have been sitting in my inbox forever. I am batching my tasks now, hoping it will make them less boring.

Today's: return a jumper that was too small.

Patronus · 06/12/2022 21:13

I’ve been smashing it today 😎. 30 mins admin, charity shop drop off x 2, recycling centre drop off AND sorted out a mess in the bottom of a wardrobe. The latter is a two-step process but already made more room.

😇

Suzie0003 · 07/12/2022 11:00

Cleaned my aquarium filter and did a 50% water change.
Bleached a coffee stain which his been on the carpet for 2 weeks 🙄
Put on a load of washing and changed 2 beds
