In a cafe, and a woman has just complained (funny)

She'd ordered a bacon sandwich and it's just been delivered to the table. She's now moaning because her bacon sandwich has a tiny crumb of black pudding on it. And she doesn't eat pork.

I feel for the poor staff having to explain which animal bacon comes from 😬

(And no, there's no vegan bacon on the menu so not a mix up!)

But she said she didn’t eat pork, not that she didn’t eat blood.

My response was just to support the answer to the original question: 'who eats pork but not blood?'

As I've just said, the husband did indeed take over the conversation, according to the OP.

As for 'what if-ing' - that isn't the gotcha you think it is. There's nothing wrong with looking beyond the surface of a situation, not making assumptions, especially not when those assumptions are unkind.

Why don't you try what-if-ing sometime? - it can be a useful way of putting yourself in the other person's shoes, and avoiding being spiteful/judgemental.

Do you have children? Can’t imagine they ever come up to you about an argument they’ve had with a peer or indeed anything they’re pissed off about that someone has done or said without you droning on about all the possible back stories

katseyes7 · 15/11/2022 17:32

This thread has reminded me of a woman l worked with who wouldn't believe that the 'lamb' she had for Sunday dinner was the same as the fluffy baby sheep that she saw in the fields on the way to work.....
"No, it's sheep! Not baby sheep?"
"That's mutton. Lamb is baby sheep. 'Lamb'. The clue's in the name."
Still wasn't having it. I gave up and changed the subject.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 15/11/2022 17:32

I think, on balance, that Occam’s Razor is best applied to third hand stories - the simplest solution is almost always the best. There is literally no point @AnApparitionQuipped trying to defend the honour for an unknown woman in an unknown town in an unknown cafe.

Sorry - that was in response to "Piglighting bastard!"

Flapjackquack · 15/11/2022 17:29

I didn’t see it at as a gotcha. The levels you are going to are quite mad. Of course I don’t take every situation at face value but I also don’t sit and think of every possible scenario because that is absurd.

Then, can you tell me what particular scenario you've settled on, and why it means the woman deserves scorn and ridicule?

Gumreduction · 15/11/2022 17:34

Op starts thread at start of lunch 12.15pm
Updates every few minutes, long posts

until Finally pausing at 2.20pm

I wonder if anyone in that cafe started a thread about people going out for lunch with their husband / friend / child and being glued to their phone throughout! 😂

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 17:35

There are so many assumptions about "Britishness" on this thread... it's ridiculous.

People can be white, have a local accent and not be British...

I don't have children, no, although I don't see why that's relevant to this thread at all.

Sewfedupofcovid · 15/11/2022 17:36

Brilliant. Had Dh and I laughing. He’s was quite pleased as there’s not been a good CF post for a while (well one we’ve spotted) and he says this makes up for it

RampantIvy · 15/11/2022 17:36

In the UK, if it says "bacon" it's pork unless otherwise specified. If its important to you, you need to check.

I agree. It’s the default. All the whataboutery re “bacon” made from other animals or indeed non meat or bacon in other cultures or countries is not relevant. We are talking about a greasy spoon in the UK. Just as in Kazakhstan you wouldn’t expect it to be made from pork as per @WiddlinDiddlin’s post.

adult women wouldn't normally send their husbands up to negotiate for them in a café

I know a few non vulnerable adult women who would.

Not relevant
but… if you ever do, I would reign in with all the possible back stories to every single negative interaction your child has with someone, as otherwise they simply will avoid telling you anything for fear of the interminable lecture that awaits them

ShirleyPhallus · 15/11/2022 12:48

God how do MNers have the ability to ruin every single fucking thread by making po-faced accusations based on totally fictitious situations.

It's like Alan Bennet's mother, who used to sit in tea rooms and Bed and Breakfast dining rooms fabricating stories about the other people who came in, and convincing herself that they were true.

😶

There is a point because some day it will be me - and it has been one of my parents - making this type of mistake and if I can stop even one person sneering and laughing, I will consider it worthwhile expending the effort on this stranger.

Ooo a new angle - But to have a local accent they tend to have lived there long enough to understand the norms of the country they are in.

AnApparitionQuipped · 15/11/2022 17:18

Those of you pulling cats bum faces at ‘maybe she has dementia’ or whatever - she wasn’t alone, was she? She was with a male companion, presumably husband, who would have smoothed over the situation with the staff if this was the case

... and the OP did in fact say the husband went to the counter on her behalf which would support the idea that she is vulnerable in some way; adult women wouldn't normally send their husbands up to negotiate for them in a cafe.

😂 no it really wouldn't.

It just means that she is like half an MN ad "doesn't do confrontation"

Thanks for your advice but as my womb and ovaries have long since been consigned to medical waste, it's redundant.

KatherineJaneway · 15/11/2022 17:42

For the sheer stupidity of a few on this thread who think "bacon" is not automatically pork, this has to go into classics.

StickySnotBalls · 15/11/2022 17:42

@AnApparitionQuipped , the OP said the woman's husband looked like he was laughing. Stop making it into something it's not. We've all made tits of ourselves at some point
I'm sorry that your dad is ill but it's not about you

Probably not - seeing as OP was on her own.

Come on! This is Mumsnet. Nobody can actually speak to anyone else about an issue. A "gentle" anonymous note delivered in the dead of night is the only way to communicate.

😂😂 it has actually made me think about doing a fry up on Sunday. Their viral marketing campaign has succeeded!

WowserBear · 15/11/2022 17:45

@Flapjackquack I made that point at the beginning actually - but there's clearly a lot of people who don't get it.

Anyways, have a good night all...
