Joules clothing has gone bust!

I just heard on the radio. Don't know what others think but I used to love their brightly coloured pyjamas.

It's a shame, I hope they can survive. The menswear is still really good quality and my DH wears a lot of their clothes. The men's casual shirts and jumpers are consistently good. I have lots of harbour tops, but only buy the plain stripes.

Assuming this means the garden trading company too? I love their stuff!

Oh I hope not - I love garden trading. Joules was very dated and boring though, and quite pricey for the quality.

SarahSissions · 14/11/2022 11:17

Joules used to be good quality country clothing, but then it became high street and the quality went through the floor. Those early days joules customers who liked the affordable good quality country clothing deserted the brand years ago and started buying from Rydale. I wouldn’t buy from joules any more no wonder they are struggling- moved too far from their target market

Primula78 · 14/11/2022 11:28

Perhaps they should look at the enormous amounts of free clothing, weekends away, days out and general stuff they have given away to tons of white middle class influences on Instagram etc.

Most of the these people don't work other than on the gram - seem to have rich enough husbands to buy joules and the like without it all being free. And yes I know its about target market - don't want to tarnish the brand by having a black women wear joules now do we.

I used to love buying my daughter or myself a little joules item as a treat but when I started to see the stuff given away and no other word about what other charities or work the company does I decided my money would go elsewhere.

Their jeans are great, I live in them.

Whitewolf2 · 14/11/2022 11:42

Well I’m sad about it, sat here in a very comfortable pair of joules jeans! I have to admit though that I never bought anything from Joules full price. They seem to have that strange model Boden have - price clothes very high and then have constant offers and sales. I also wondered how they could afford to have a store in pretty much every town I’ve visited.

Clarinet1 · 14/11/2022 12:07

Sorry - I’m a big Joules fan. I like a bit of pattern and I think that plain tweeds in boring colours or shiny fabrics are far more frumpy! Also, for whatever reason, there were often bargains to be had.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/11/2022 12:10

I d okra have many but I've always been pleased with the quality of Joules clothes. I am sitting here in a stripey sweatshirt at the moment. I've had it years and it's one of my favourite things.

Just last night I was ironing a cotton duvet cover and thinking how easy it was to iron compared to cheaper ones I have.

I hardly ever bought any womenswear from there - even the plain items had branding on (I don’t want a pink rabbit on my workwear cardigans!)

The kids’ stuff was good until recently, though — beautiful girls’ dresses of amazing quality. DD had some gorgeous things about 7-8 years ago that were incredibly well made — lined good quality linen cotton dresses in lovely prints. Sadly I don’t think they have sold things like that for a while, though.

The quality went downhill a few years ago; and like a pp I thought the “third party hosting” website thing was the kiss of death. It made their own website unusable. And if I want to buy something from Cox&Cox I’ll buy it direct! Not through someone else’s website. I once bought some plants from Ivyline through the friends of Joules website, and they were really late and not good quality - two died almost instantly and I could not get any decent customer service on it at all.

It’s been clear for a while that it’s a bad idea for name brand websites to do the “third party hosting” thing. Even Tesco had to stop doing it in the early 2010s when they tried it: it similarly made their website unusable and dropped online sales massively until they went back to their own brands. Bad idea for Joules.

I find shopping on Amazon these days near impossible for pretty much this reason.

There does seem to be something of a big shift happening in fashion, too - a bit like the one that happened at the start of the 90s. I think all the bright colours, stripes, prints and sequins of the last 10-15 years are going to be massively out of fashion for a while. Amongst young people at the moment it’s like the return of scruffy out there. Bretons and appliqué and sequins are going to seem like 1980s “nautique” did in 1995. Aspirational or smart / smart casual dressing is going to disappear for a bit. I think a fair few brands will suffer tbh.

They haven't gone bust. They have suspended their shares and calling in administrators and hope to find a buyer. Please be kind to staff in the shops. My friend has already had some twatty comments this morning.

Why?! What do people gain out of being an idiot like that.

I haven’t read all the thread but I visited the Cox and Cox website and it has the Joules logo on it too . Having read that Joules has gone bust am wondering if it is their sister company or if they are buying them out ?

Partypoooooper · 14/11/2022 13:06

Such a shame for all the staff and less choice is never good for customers but they lost their way, it used to be great for my casual/farm work wear back in the 00s polo/rugby shirts and sweatshirts, now there's nothing I could wear to work.

I occasionally pop in there if I'm in town and it's still so samey samey designs of lower quality and higher prices.

Sadly I think this is the first of many 🫤

LisaJool · 14/11/2022 13:08

Off the back of this thread I went to have a nosey on the website. I am pleasantly surprised, very little of the stripes with large flowers that I see in the Joules section in the local garden centre. They have a lot of nice plain, classic looking stuff it's a pity they don't cater for my size though.

This is escalating Confused

mamabear715 · 14/11/2022 13:18

Isn't it, @BretonBlue ?
Up to the individual what they wear! I personally have never liked Joules, but as I'm sat here in denim jeggings & a fluffy bunny jumper, I don't think anyone would want fashion tips from me! ;-)

NooNooHead1981 · 14/11/2022 13:19

It is escalating... and I think "cheap" supermarket clothes have their place along with (overpriced) quality Joules brands too.

I will miss Joules, I have some gorgeous fleece zip up jackets that my eldest DD wore, which I've kept for a decade and now my youngest DD is in. The quality is definitely very good.

ChristmasisRuined · 14/11/2022 13:22

I'm gutted, I love the quality of their stuff (despite the fading of their dresses).

Every year at the Great Yorkshire Show, they have a giant pop up shop. It won’t be the same without it

Elphame · 14/11/2022 13:23

Can't say I'm altogether surprised. The writing has been on the wall for them for quite a while.

The quality has been getting worse for years and they are expensive for what they are.

Wexone · 14/11/2022 13:26

i actually like Joules- Late 30's nearly 40. There is a large one in a town we often go for on hols so pick up some bits each time. Have some nice long sleeve tops and also got some nice shorts. I think the quality is good for its price. What i like about the long sleeve tops is that they are warm. They are most certainly not at primark level of quality

Regardless of what you think of their clothing, its another company going, its more jobs going and empty retail units in towns. I really hope it doesn't get bought by Bohoo, Mike Ashly or ASOS etc as they quality will even worsen.

ChristmasisRuined · 14/11/2022 13:26

olivehater · 14/11/2022 07:27

It’s a shame but that Breton and quilted jacket look is synonymous with the 10s and they done appear to have updated their look at all.

Sad I hate that there are so many assumed rules for what we wear. Especially as women. Why can’t we just wear what we like without being concerned whether it's 'up to date' or not?

This, the fashion seems really grungy with teens at the moment! I’m 30 and when I look back at pics of me and my friends in our teens (2006/2007ish) it definitely seems more casual smart- skinny jeans, more fitted tops and cardigans, ballet pumps, stripes etc. Now it’s all 1990s sort of grunge oversized sweatshirts, big baggy jeans, scruffy trainers. Joules fit in more with the former.
