late, but:

ISW Key Takeaways

Russian officials are preparing for further covert mobilization efforts even as the fall conscription cycle is underway, likely further diminishing the development of quality mobilized and conscripted servicemen.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that it does not recognize the illegal Russian seizure of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) or the illegal annexation of other occupied Ukrainian territory, a sharp escalation in IAEA rhetoric.

Social media footage circulated on November 18 shows a Russian soldier opening fire on Ukrainians as other Russian soldiers were surrendering.

Russian forces reinforced rear areas in Luhansk Oblast and attempted to regain lost positions as Ukrainian troops continued counteroffensive operations along the Svatove-Kreminna line.

Russian forces continued limited ground assaults near Bakhmut and Avdiivka and in western Donetsk Oblast.

Russian occupation officials and military leadership are seemingly increasingly concerned about subsequent Ukrainian counteroffensive operations in southern Ukraine.

Russia continues to face exceedingly low morale and poor discipline among its forces against the backdrop of ongoing domestic backlash to partial mobilization.

Russian occupation officials and forces continued to intensify filtration measures in Russian-occupied territories.

I don’t think anyone can ever comprehend such a level of brutality that the “brotherly” Russian nation imposed on the Ukrainians, including children. This is not new, they were doing this back in 2014 in Donetsk/ Luhansk. What horrors will be uncovered when the whole of Ukraine is eventually deoccupied?

On a more positive note, it is really good news that Sinai went to Ukraine.

@ScrollingLeaves there is little petrol but it is arriving in Kherson in increasing amounts. I am told you have to queue for about two hours at the moment.

I don't know of any big charities sending generators but individuals and small groups are sending money to volunteers on the ground to buy them. My friends in Odesa have acquired a special license to leave Ukraine and go to Romania or even Bulgaria for those items which are hard to get hold of.

www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-announces-new-air-defence-for-ukraine-on-first-visit-to-kyiv

Previously announced missile delivery will presumably be more AMRAAMS and reloads for stuff like Starstreak.

Have to say heads are being scratched (mine included) about the origin/identity of the 125 anti-aircraft guns, AFAIK haven't been any in the UK inventory in literally decades, maybe they are a buy in by the UK to donate directly from source to Ukraine....however they are sourced it obviously needs to be PDQ.

In any event it's good news.

Vickers Mark IV perhaps?

Just kidding, sort of.

Day 229, November 19, 2022. Summary of #Arestovych and #Feygin broadcast
Posted on 20 November 2022

Overall front-line situation:
🔥 No significant overall changes. Russian artillery has shelled the right bank for the first time since the retreat, with civilian casualties. Ukrainian artillery responds by hitting military targets. Russian advance halted near Hulyaipole due to the arrival of Ukrainian reserves and artillery. Several company attacks a day on the rest of the southern part of the front, of a tactical nature which will not affect the bigger picture. Russians are deploying new battalion-sized forces to the east.

🔥 Makiivka POW surrender: Arestovich notes several things: 1. Provocations during a surrender constitute a war crime. 2. If soldiers act aggressively or present danger during a surrender, they cease to be protected by the Geneva convention. From this video, it is unclear how the surrendering acted. 3. Ukrainians are carrying out an internal investigation. 4. Arestovich, as an officer believes that it is not in the nature of Ukrainian soldiers to execute POWs. On the contrary, he knows of “at least 30” cases where Russians tortured and executed Ukrainian POWs.Arestovich thinks that after the gunman jumped out, several of the Russians on the floor tried to escape or grab weapons and were shot by the outnumbered Ukrainians. This could also be a Russian psyop to discourage their soldiers from surrendering.

🔥 Rishi Sunak and negotiations with Russia: All British prime ministers voice the collective view of the British elites, which is overwhelmingly in favor of Ukraine. At the same time as western politicians say the word negotiations, another girl is raped and a man tortured to death in a basement. Ukraine will therefore not negotiate no matter the pressure exerted upon it. Today Scholz announced the collective position of the EU that Putin must withdraw all troops for negotiations to take place. Any talk of negotiations only demoralizes Ukraine and those who support and fight for Ukraine and gives hope to Putin and other dictators around the world. Arestovich asks GOP members who want to cut aid and negotiate and European politicians of the same position: Do you want a second siege of Kyiv? Because this will be what happens if Ukraine gives into negotiations. What are you aiming for? A second Bucha? More torture chambers and civilian deaths? So far weapons shipments are not decreasing but on the contrary increasing.

🔥 Explosion in St Petersburg: Russians keep smoking near strategic targets. Ukraine did not blow up the gas in St Petersburg, but there are Russians within Russia who would.

🔥 Belarus: The Belarusian army is incapable of any large-scale action and should not be feared. The Russian army has recently deployed S-300s to Belarus, but there are no signs of preparation for a land invasion. On the other hand, Ukraine is fully prepared for a land invasion from Belarus. If they decide to attack, Ukraine will know in advance and destroy them when they do.

🔥 Effects of strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure: Availability of utilities varies, depending on the area and local infrastructure. There are some places where there is no electricity for 12 hours of the day. Russia will not achieve negotiations using this approach.

🔥 Russia declared “terrorist state” by EU Parliament: This is good because Ukraine can use it as an excuse not to negotiate with literal terrorists. It is strange to see European policy being far more pragmatic than the USA’s even though it is usually the other way around. The French and especially German positions on Ukraine have improved significantly in the last few weeks.
