Completely agree @Vigneau

We need to stand together and fight!

XanaduKira · 16/11/2022 20:35

Thank you @prettybird

MagicFox · 16/11/2022 20:37

I do agree @Vigneau It feels like we're coming to a crescendo

Ugh @Vigneau, that all sounds so depressing οΏΌ I know that it's the reality though. Thanks @prettybird for reminding us of some positive bits.

prettybird · 16/11/2022 20:34

At least Bolsonaro is no longer leader of Braxil Smile

And a Centre-Left grouping won in the recent Danish elections.

Plus the anticipated "red wave" didn't happen in the US mid-terms - it's at most a faint ripple, with the Trump endorsed candidates doing badly.

So it's not all doom and gloom in the world Wink

We need to take the positives where we can find them.

Re the US midterms, for me, the good news is not the short-term underperformance of the republicans (members of the house have to run every two years); it's that Trump has lost the appearance of invincibility and will now accelerate his own political demise.

Redtoothbrush was attacked by another poster but I couldn’t make heads or tails of the other persons point.

Neither could I. It was just bizarre. Someone else must have got fed up too, cos I didn't report it.

It felt like I was being attacked for trying to be the voice of sanity and saying nukes were not imminent and and then got attacked for 'war mongering' and wanting censorship despite actually saying chill and take the emotions down a notch.

I hope it's calmed down cos honestly, I feel like it's a parallel dimension. Its been a while since I've come across a thread with that low a level of understanding of how politics work in practice (and completely separate for any sort of ideological position - even Russia gets the framework of politics even if they play their cards in a different manner).

Grateful for this thread even if I don't always agree with people. Understanding about the concept of reality v ideology v war misinformation regardless of views of what should happen is comforting.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 16/11/2022 20:46

There have been massive, massive gains in the last three months. Compare the situation now to 2 months after the invasion began and the suburbs of Kyiv were facing Russian tanks!

I've perhaps been allowing myself to get too absorbed by the war for good mental health. I'll take a bit of a break for a couple of days, maybe do the ISW round ups and highlights of the Kyiv Independent posts, and come back on Sunday =)

Incidentally I was reflecting today that my mental health has nosedived recently. I’m terrible for doomscrolling and honestly it’s like a form of mental self-harm.

yes!

Think I need more exercise and fresh air and less phone time!

katem98 · 16/11/2022 20:53

@Igotjelly Totally get this. I feel the same way. I ran out of 4G at work the other day and didn't realise until it was time for me to head home. Obviously didn't get any news notifications etc and felt quite refreshing really.

Goldenbear · 16/11/2022 21:00

Tbf I was on the other thread last night and today and I know that I threw in some rational thoughts and maybe some humour to highlight the ridiculousness of some of the opinions. Yes, it was thoughtless derision in the end and just seemed spiteful.

EdithStourton · 16/11/2022 21:30

I avoid a lot of that news. I've been cheering myself up by watching liberation videos from Kherson. Can recommend.

TheABC · 16/11/2022 21:40

The war ends when Russia buggers off back to its border or when Ukraine negotiates a peace treaty. Or both.

Having said that, I have been pleasantly surprised at how much land Ukraine has retaken, especially without full air defence or a decent navy. There's a reasonable chance the Russian army will collapse over winter and pull back as they don't have the cold weather kit they need to stay put.

What concerns me is how much of Ukraine is without energy at the moment. the civilian population will continue to suffer, alongside the mobiks.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 16/11/2022 21:53

Bad news From Iuliia Mendel at 20:13, usually a reliable source:

If you want to know what’s happening in Kherson - there is some shooting there, both in the city and in the region. Russians are regrouping and posing threat.

https://twitter.com/iuliiamendel/status/1592974253351403520?s=12

In better news:

Explosions are reported in Dzhankoy, Crimea. Some sources hint that the explosions could have been in the airport area.

https://twitter.com/bayraktar1love/status/1592992837460963329?s=61&t=WsHCWZmJ7Zjrqxxolii_jNQ

Several sources reporting the above.

RedToothBrush · 16/11/2022 21:55

Explosions reported at Dzhankoy, Crimea. This is the sight of an air field.

Locals reported have said there were about 80 units of equipment stationed there including Su-25 attack aircraft and Su-34 bombers, which are apparently on fire.

(((Tendar))) AT Tendar
Dzhankoy is more than 140km away from the front, making it impossible that it might be GMLRS. Could be drones, but in any case it shows how vulnerable the Russian occupation in the South has become with the liberation of Kherson.

Booklover3 · 16/11/2022 21:58

Sorry to be a bit slow @RedToothBrush but would that be Russian equipment on fire or Ukrainian? Do we know?

Russian Equipment at a Russian base in Crimea hit by Ukrainian kamikaze drones.

Booklover3 · 16/11/2022 22:00

That’s what I thought I just wanted to check before I whooped

TokyoSushi · 16/11/2022 22:18

Bless DD who is 9 and said earlier "Mummy, this is ridiculous, it's like France wanting to take over Germany, they can't because it's a different country! The Russians just need to get back in their own country and stay there!"

If only lovely little one, if only!

RedToothBrush · 16/11/2022 22:56

Someone's been on GB News:

Nigel Farage AT Nigel_Farage
Do we really, wholly trust Volodymyr Zelenskyy?

Funny that. Seems to be a theme today.

Booklover3 · 16/11/2022 23:01

I trust him more than I trust Putin. Quite possibly more than I trust Sunak actually. As much as anyone can trust a politician they don’t know. He seems to be doing what he thinks is the best for his country. I admire that.

Definitely trying to undermine Ukraine. This sort of thing along with the response from Russia to the U.S is making my skin crawl a bit. More is afoot.

Straight forward answer to Farage yes I trust him, certainly more than I would ever trust you

What amazes me about Russian air bases is the complete lack of hangers. Aircraft are parked on aprons with no cover even in the very north. This will make them more vulnerable to attack, particularly munitions that burst at very low altitude and which have optimum CEP.
